PIC12LF1822-I/SN Présentation

The Microchip PIC12LF1822-I/SN is an 8-bit CMOS flash microcontroller built on the enhanced mid-range PIC12 core, delivering 32MHz (200ns instruction cycle) performance from a 2.5V to 3.6V supply in an 8-pin SOIC (SN) package. It integrates 3.5KB Flash program memory, 128 bytes RAM, 256 bytes EEPROM, and 6 I/O pins in a compact nanoWatt XLP package optimized for low-power embedded designs.

What is a PIC microcontroller? A PIC (Peripheral Interface Controller) is a family of 8-bit RISC microcontrollers from Microchip Technology built around a Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses. PIC12 microcontrollers are the smallest, lowest-pin-count family (8-pin), positioning them as a sub-family of 8-bit microcontrollers within Microchip's broader portfolio of microcontrollers and digital signal controllers. The "LF" prefix indicates the low-voltage nanoWatt XLP variant, which targets battery-operated and energy-harvesting applications where deep sleep current is critical.

Key features of the PIC12LF1822 include an internal 32MHz oscillator (selectable), 4-channel 10-bit ADC, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, Enhanced Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (EUSART), and two capture/compare/PWM modules. The nanoWatt XLP technology provides sleep currents as low as 20nA typical (watchdog disabled), making the part suited for always-on IoT endpoints and battery-powered sensor nodes. The integrated ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) interface allows in-system firmware updates without removing the device from the board.

Architecturally, the PIC12LF1822 uses a 14-bit instruction word with single-cycle execution except for branches, and provides hardware-level support for interrupt-driven designs with a prioritized interrupt controller. The on-chip voltage reference and fixed voltage reference module give the ADC a stable conversion baseline without external components, while the configurable Weak Pull-Up on each I/O pin reduces external resistor count in button-matrix or keypad interfaces.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered remote controls, wearable health monitors, automotive interior lighting, and portable consumer electronics. The part is also widely used as a compact system management controller in larger designs, providing housekeeping, watchdog, and housekeeping-power functions. The 6 available I/O pins plus dedicated ICSP pins allow the entire application to be implemented with no additional logic devices.

When designing with this device, place a 0.1uF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin and tie all unused I/O pins to defined logic levels (either VDD or VSS) to minimize current leakage. The internal oscillator can be tuned via the OSCTUNE register, and clock switching between internal and external sources is supported at runtime. Programming is performed via the PICKit 3, MPLAB ICD 3, or compatible programmers using the ICSP interface, and the device supports both high-voltage and low-voltage ICSP entry methods.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in same-package alternatives, and practical low-power design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone. Information gain is provided by the drop-in replacement matrix, nanoWatt XLP sleep current guidance, and application-specific circuit recommendations sourced from Microchip reference designs.

Per Microchip datasheet 40001413F, the part achieves ~20nA sleep current with the watchdog disabled, allowing a CR2032 coin cell (220mAh) to power the MCU alone for over 100 years in deep sleep. The integrated 10-bit ADC handles temperature, humidity, or analog sensor interfaces without external signal conditioning. The 6 available I/O pins accommodate a wake-up button, status LED, sensor enable line, and a 2-wire SPI/I2C sensor bus. Compared to a switching regulator solution, the LF XLP core avoids switching noise that could disturb sensitive sensor measurements. The 3.5KB Flash comfortably fits typical BLE beacon or LoRaWAN node firmware at 8-bit density.

📱

Remote Control and Consumer HID

For infrared remote controls, wireless presenters, and consumer human-interface devices, the PIC12LF1822-I/SN provides 6 I/O pins sufficient for a 4x4 button matrix using a diode-resistor encoding, plus IR LED drive and indicator LED. The 32MHz internal oscillator handles IR carrier generation (typically 38kHz-56kHz) directly without external crystal. Per Microchip datasheet 40001413F, the device's 200ns instruction cycle supports protocol bit-banging for NEC, RC5, and SIRC IR protocols. The 2.5V-3.6V supply aligns perfectly with two AAA cells. Fast wake-up from sleep (<1us typical) preserves battery life between button presses, and the on-chip EEPROM stores pairing codes or device IDs across battery swaps.

🚗

Automotive Interior Lighting Controller

In automotive interior lighting applications (ambient LED strips, dome lights, footwell illumination), the PIC12LF1822-I/SN drives N-MOSFETs or LED driver ICs via its PWM/ECCP modules. The 2.5V-3.6V supply operates from a 3.3V regulator on the body control module's 12V battery rail. Note that the PIC12LF1822-I/SN is not AEC-Q100 qualified; for AEC-Q100 automotive applications, the PIC12F1822-I/SN or PIC12LF1822T-I/SN must be specified instead. The 6 I/O pins comfortably handle 2 LED channels, a CAN-wake interface, and a fault-feedback line.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Transmitter

The PIC12LF1822-I/SN serves as a compact sensor-transmitter MCU for industrial 4-20mA loops, RTD conditioning, or thermocouple front-ends where space is constrained. The 10-bit ADC provides sufficient resolution for thermocouple cold-junction compensation when paired with a precision op-amp, and the on-chip voltage reference stabilizes readings over temperature. Per Microchip datasheet 40001413F, the industrial -40C to +85C operating range covers most factory environments. The EUSART peripheral drives RS-485 transceivers directly, enabling Modbus RTU slave implementations. With the LF variant's 2.5V-3.6V range, the MCU is powered from a 3.3V LDO downstream of the loop's switching regulator. Fast PWM output can synthesize loop-current setpoints in PID implementations.

💊

Portable Medical Wearable

Per Microchip datasheet 40001413F, the part wakes from sleep in under 1us to perform periodic measurements, returning to deep sleep between events. The 10-bit ADC captures photodiode current from pulse-oximeter sensors with adequate dynamic range for SpO2 calculation when paired with transimpedance amplification. The small SOIC-8 package fits wrist-watch form factors. The 256B EEPROM stores calibration coefficients and patient ID. Designers should validate IEC 60601-1 compliance at the system level; the PIC12LF1822 alone does not constitute a medical device.

🏠

Smart Home Edge Sensor

In smart-home edge sensors (door/window contact, motion, leak detection, temperature/humidity), the PIC12LF1822-I/SN provides the lowest possible idle current for battery-powered wireless sensors reporting via Zigbee, Z-Wave, BLE, or proprietary sub-GHz radios. Per Microchip datasheet 40001413F, the ~20nA sleep current allows a CR2032 coin cell to power the MCU and wake-up logic for over a decade in typical use. The on-board SPI or I2C peripheral connects directly to radios and digital sensors without external glue logic. The 6 I/O pins accommodate a reed switch or PIR sensor input, a radio chip-select line, an interrupt line, and an LED indicator. The wide -40C to +85C industrial range handles outdoor installations.

Notes de conception

Place a 0.1uF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3mm of the VDD pin (pin 1) with a short, wide trace to pin 8 (VSS). For applications using ADC, add a 10uF bulk capacitor on VDD. The PIC12LF1822-I/SN draws a few mA active at 32MHz but only ~20nA in deep sleep (per Microchip datasheet 40001413F), so the decoupling must handle the load-step during wake-up transitions without causing VDD droop that resets the part.

Always tie the MCLR pin (pin 4) to VDD through a 10kohm pull-up resistor. If left floating, the PIC12LF1822-I/SN will randomly enter reset due to noise coupling. For ICSP programming, the MCLR pin also receives VPP (~8.5V typical for high-voltage ICSP) from the programmer - the 10kohm pull-up must be sized so the programmer can override it without contention. Per Microchip datasheet 40001413F, never drive MCLR below VSS or above VDD + 0.3V except in ICSP mode.

Route the ICSP signals (ICSPCLK on pin 6, ICSPDAT on pin 7, MCLR on pin 4) to a 6-pin header (0.1 inch pitch) for programming access. Place the header at the board edge for PICKit 3 / MPLAB ICD 3 clip access. Avoid routing analog signals (AN0-AN3) adjacent to digital switching lines to minimize ADC noise coupling. The exposed pad of the SOIC-8 is not present (unlike DFN packages), so no thermal pad connection is required.

Estimated: at maximum clock (32MHz) and 3.6V supply, the PIC12LF1822-I/SN consumes approximately 6mA active current (per typical curves in Microchip datasheet 40001413F), dissipating ~22mW in the SOIC-8 package. The SOIC-8 has a theta_JA of approximately 163 C/W (per Microchip packaging thermal data), yielding a junction temperature rise of only ~3.5C above ambient. No thermal management is required even at maximum operating conditions. However, in enclosed housings without airflow, ambient temperature can rise above +85C, derating reliability.
