PIC16C58B-20/P Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16C58B-20/P is a member of the PIC16C5X family of low-cost, high-performance, 8-bit fully-static EPROM/ROM-based CMOS microcontrollers. It integrates 3KB (2K x 12) of One-Time-Programmable (OTP) program memory, 73 bytes of RAM, and 12 I/O pins in an 18-pin PDIP through-hole package. The device operates at a maximum clock frequency of 20 MHz, delivering a 200 ns instruction cycle through Microchip's RISC architecture with only 33 single-word/single-cycle instructions.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that contains a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals, designed for embedded control applications. Within the semiconductor hierarchy, MCUs sit under microcontrollers -> embedded processors -> logic ICs -> integrated circuits. The PIC16C5X family specifically targets cost-sensitive applications where deterministic execution and minimal external component count are valued over absolute computational throughput.

Key features include a two-level deep hardware stack, direct/indirect/relative addressing modes for both data and instructions, an 8-bit real-time clock/counter (TMR0), and a watchdog timer for reliable operation. The Harvard-style 12-bit instruction word and 8-bit data path yield 2:1 code compression over competing 8-bit architectures. Power-fail reset, brown-out detection, and a wide operating voltage range (typically 2.5V to 5.5V for the 'B' revision) make the part suitable for battery-powered and industrial environments.

Typical applications include appliance control, sensor signal conditioning, LED lighting controllers, automotive subsystems (non-safety-critical), and low-cost consumer electronics. The OTP memory allows prototype-to-production migration within the same pinout, reducing time-to-market for short-run or field-programmed designs.

When designing with this device, note that OTP parts can be programmed only once — for iterative development use a windowed (JW) or flash-based sibling such as PIC16F58A. Decoupling capacitors (0.1 uF) should be placed close to VDD, and unused I/O pins must be configured as outputs to minimize current draw.

This page synthesizes distributor stock and pricing (as of 2026-09-17), cross-package-aware drop-in alternatives from the same PIC16C5X family, and practical design notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet's typical-application circuit.

Applications typiques

PIC16C58B-20/P convient pour 7 applications: Appliance Control Boards, Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes, LED Lighting Controllers, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety), Industrial Control Logic Replacement, Consumer Electronics User Interfaces, Hobbyist and Educational Projects.

🏭

Appliance Control Boards

The PIC16C58B-20/P is well-suited for low-cost appliance control boards such as washing-machine timers, microwave user interfaces, and HVAC zone controllers. Its 33-instruction RISC core and 200 ns instruction cycle at 20 MHz deliver enough throughput for keypad scanning, relay sequencing, and triac phase-control loops without external logic. The 12 I/O pins directly drive seven-segment LEDs, multiplexed keypads, and zero-cross detection inputs. The 73-byte RAM is adequate for state-machine scheduling, and the integrated watchdog timer plus brown-out reset handle the electrically noisy environment of motor-driven loads. Compared with larger flash PIC MCUs, the PIC16C58B-20/P keeps the BOM cost below $1.50 at volume while still supporting in-production calibration via the OTP programming window.

🔋

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The PIC16C58B-20/P fits battery-powered sensor nodes that sample slowly and sleep between readings. Its CMOS implementation draws low current from a 2.5 V to 5.5 V supply, allowing direct operation from two AA cells or a 3.3 V coin-cell backup. The 8-bit TMR0 with external T0CKI input can wake the part on a periodic basis, while the 12 I/O pins read temperature, humidity, or contact-closure sensors without an external multiplexer. The 3 KB OTP holds compact C-assembly hybrid code for calibration tables and linearization routines. For higher-pin-count or analog-intensive nodes the ATMEGA168P-20AU from the Site MPN list offers 8-channel 10-bit ADC and In-System Programming in the same through-hole footprint family.

💡

LED Lighting Controllers

For addressable LED string drivers and decorative lighting controllers the PIC16C58B-20/P provides deterministic PWM-like bit-banging at 20 MHz. Its single-cycle instruction set lets the core generate WS2812B or APA102 timing protocols in software, freeing the designer from an external LED driver IC. The 12 I/O pins handle three to four independent LED channels plus a UART or DMX-style input, and the 3 KB OTP comfortably stores color tables, fade curves, and protocol stacks. The 18-pin PDIP form factor suits through-hole prototyping on perfboard before migrating to a surface-mount PIC16F equivalent for production.

🔧

Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)

The PIC16C58B-20/P serves automotive body-electronics modules such as interior lighting dimmers, mirror-position controllers, and seat-heater switches where functional safety is not required. Its industrial temperature sibling PIC16C58B-20I/P extends the operating range to -40 C to +85 C for under-dash environments. The integrated watchdog timer and brown-out reset provide resilience against cranking transients on the 12 V bus when paired with an external voltage regulator. The 12 I/O pins read switch matrices and drive low-side MOSFETs for incandescent and LED loads. Note that AEC-Q100 qualified parts in the PIC16F family should be selected for any safety-critical or under-hood application.

🏭

Industrial Control Logic Replacement

Engineers use the PIC16C58B-20/P as a modern one-chip replacement for legacy 4000-series CMOS logic in industrial control panels. A single PIC16C58B-20/P can replace dozens of discrete gates by implementing combinational and sequential logic in firmware. The 20 MHz clock delivers 5 MIPS, and the integrated watchdog timer detects firmware lockup and self-resets the controller. The 73-byte RAM holds boolean state arrays for up to 600 flags, and the 18-pin PDIP package fits standard industrial DIN-rail socket footprints. The NRND status makes it suitable only for sustaining legacy equipment; new installations should use the flash-based PIC16F57-I/P or PIC16F88-I/P from the Site MPN list.

📱

Consumer Electronics User Interfaces

The PIC16C58B-20/P handles user-interface tasks in consumer electronics such as remote-control transmitters, simple toys, and small kitchen appliances. Its low cost (under $1.50 at 1000-piece quantities) keeps the BOM competitive against dedicated UI controller ASICs. The PIC16C5X instruction set is straightforward to learn, and the 3 KB OTP accommodates custom button-mapping tables, IR protocols (RC5, NEC), and piezo-buzzer melodies. The 8-bit TMR0 generates accurate carrier frequencies for IR transmission, and the 12 I/O pins scan 4x4 keypads or matrix-LED displays directly. The /MCLR pin enables in-system programming during the OEM manufacturing flow before the OTP window is locked.

🎓

Hobbyist and Educational Projects

The PIC16C58B-20/P remains a popular choice for hobbyist projects, university embedded-systems courses, and retro-computing reproductions because of its simplicity and documentation maturity. The 33-instruction RISC core can be taught in a single lab session, and assembly-language students can hand-assemble programs within the 3 KB OTP window. The 18-pin PDIP package fits standard breadboards and 0.1 inch perfboard, and the through-hole lead finish is forgiving of repeated insertions. Educational labs benefit from the PIC16C58B-04I/P slower-grade variant which lets students observe timing effects without high-speed oscilloscopes.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Highest speed grade in the PIC16C58B OTP family (vs PIC16C58B-04/P)
  • Larger program memory than PIC16C57C siblings (vs PIC16C57C-20/P)
  • OTP cost advantage over flash siblings (vs PIC16F57-I/P)

Notes de conception

Decouple VDD (pin 14) to VSS (pin 5) with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pins; add a 10 uF tantalum bulk capacitor if the supply is shared with motors or relays. The PIC16C58B-20/P operates from 2.5 V to 5.5 V but the brown-out reset threshold tracks VDD - at 3.3 V operation verify that the BOR trip voltage does not interfere with intentional low-voltage sleep modes. Estimated: the part consumes roughly 2 mA active at 5 V/20 MHz and less than 1 uA in sleep, per typical PIC16C5X datasheet curves.

OTP memory can be programmed only once. During development use a windowed (JW) sample or a flash-based PIC16F57-I/P sibling with the same pinout. The /MCLR pin (pin 4) must NOT be left floating - tie it through a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; otherwise spurious resets will occur. Unused I/O pins must be configured as outputs (not inputs) to avoid shoot-through current in the input buffer; this is a common cause of higher-than-expected quiescent current on shipped product.

The 18-pin PDIP footprint has a 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) pin pitch and through-hole pads suitable for standard 0.6 mm to 0.8 mm drill holes. Keep the crystal or resonator within 10 mm of pins 15 (OSC2) and 16 (OSC1) and route the OSC traces over a continuous ground plane to minimize EMI. Place the ICSP /MCLR pull-up close to the pin to avoid high-impedance noise pickup during programming. When migrating from PDIP to SOIC/SSOP for production, remember that the /P, /SO, and /SS package suffixes carry different lead-free and RoHS status.
