PIC16C58B-40/SO Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16C58B-40/SO is an 8-bit RISC PIC microcontroller based on the PIC16C core, featuring 3KB (2K x 12) One-Time-Programmable (OTP) EPROM program memory, 73 bytes of RAM, and 12 I/O pins, operating at up to 40 MHz from a 3.3V/5V supply in an 18-pin SOIC (SO) wide-body package. The device implements a RISC instruction set of 33 single-word, single-cycle instructions (program branches take two cycles), with all instructions fetched in a single instruction cycle for deterministic throughput. The 40 MHz clock speed and 200 ns instruction cycle provide an order-of-magnitude performance uplift over competing 8-bit CISC microcontrollers of its generation.

An OTP-based 8-bit microcontroller is a member of the EPROM/ROM-based CMOS microcontroller category, sitting within the broader microcontroller (MCU) hierarchy: 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor IC. These devices trade reprogrammability for low unit cost, making them well-suited to high-volume, code-stable applications where the firmware is finalized before mask/OTP programming. The PIC16C5X family, including the PIC16C58B, is the predecessor lineage to modern PIC16F1xxx Flash-based MCUs, retaining the same peripheral model and instruction set for migration continuity.

Key features of the PIC16C58B-40/SO include a fully static CMOS design (enabling operation down to DC clock rates for low-power sleep modes), a wide 3.0V-5.5V supply range (5V nominal at 40 MHz), 12 bidirectional digital I/O pins with programmable direction, a watchdog timer, power-on reset, and brown-out detection. The OTP EPROM provides 2,048 words (12 bits per word) of program storage, while 73 bytes of general-purpose RAM support data manipulation and stack operations. The 18-SOIC package is footprint-compatible with the PIC16C55/C56/C57 family members.

The architecture uses a Harvard-style separate program and data bus, with program memory fetched in parallel with instruction execution to sustain single-cycle throughput. The ALU operates on 8-bit operands with carry, borrow, and decimal-adjust flags; arithmetic, logical, and bit-manipulation instructions are unified into a single instruction word. This tight architecture minimizes silicon die area and dynamic power consumption, contributing to the family's reputation for cost-effective embedded control.

Typical applications include appliance control, automotive body modules, sensor signal conditioning, simple motor control, LED driving, remote control encoders, and any high-volume consumer or industrial product requiring a low-cost 8-bit controller. The PIC16C58B-40/SO is also widely used in educational and hobbyist applications that benefit from the established PIC16C5X toolchain. Designers should note that the 40 MHz speed grade requires a 4.5V-5.5V supply; for 3.3V operation the slower speed grade variants (e.g., -04, -20) must be selected. This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in package alternatives, and practical design considerations not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

🏭

Appliance Control and Home Electronics

The PIC16C58B-40/SO's 40 MHz throughput, 12 I/O pins, and 3 KB OTP program memory make it well-suited for low-cost appliance controllers including washing machines, microwave ovens, and HVAC controls. Its 5V-tolerant CMOS design integrates cleanly with relays and triac drivers via the 12 digital I/O pins, while the deterministic 100 ns instruction cycle supports accurate timing of motor commutation and zero-cross detection. The OTP memory locks firmware once finalized, preventing field reprogramming and reducing firmware tampering risk. This application leverages the PIC16C5X RISC architecture for predictable response times in safety-critical timing loops, and the wide 18-SOIC footprint remains manufacturable on standard SMT equipment.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics

The PIC16C58B-40/SO operates reliably across -40 C to +85 C and is widely deployed in automotive body modules for window lifts, mirror adjusters, and seat controllers where a sealed firmware image is preferred. Its 40 MHz execution delivers responsive control of motor encoders and position sensors, and the 12 I/O pins multiplex keypad scanning and LED indication. The OTP EPROM ensures that the firmware cannot be field-modified, satisfying OEM security requirements. Combined with external watchdog supervisor ICs and high-side drivers, the device forms the core of compact, cost-optimized body controllers. The wide 18-SOIC footprint simplifies PCB layout across module variants.

📱

Remote Control and RF Encoder Applications

The PIC16C58B-40/SO's compact code footprint and 73 bytes of RAM support common remote control encoders (PT2262-compatible protocols, EV1527, fixed-code transmission) where deterministic timing of the carrier burst is critical. The 12 I/O pins drive matrix keypads and RF transmitter enable lines, while the 40 MHz clock provides precise 1 ms tick generation for rolling-code timing. OTP EPROM is advantageous here because the transmit code is locked at production and cannot be cloned via in-circuit reprogramming. The low-power CMOS core extends battery life by idling in sleep mode between keystrokes, and the 18-SOIC footprint fits inside a slim AA-battery housing.

💡

LED Lighting and Display Drivers

The PIC16C58B-40/SO's 12 I/O pins can directly sink LED current up to 25 mA per pin (per PIC16C5X datasheet), supporting multiplexed 7-segment display scanning and Charlieplexed LED matrices without external driver ICs. The 40 MHz throughput enables smooth PWM dimming across multiple channels at >1 kHz refresh rates to eliminate flicker, while the 73 bytes of RAM are sufficient to track brightness look-up tables. OTP memory locks the lighting profile at production, which is desirable for branded lighting products. Designers should add series resistors to limit I/O pin current and consider thermal management if multiple outputs are continuously on.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC16C58B-40/SO is used in industrial sensor modules for digital filtering, threshold detection, and Modbus-style serial output of analog readings. Although it has no on-chip ADC, the device pairs with external ADC companions (e.g., MCP3002) to provide 10-bit readings of bridge sensors, thermistors, and 4-20 mA loops. The 40 MHz throughput supports up to 10 kHz sampling rates with digital filtering in firmware. Its 5V tolerance matches most industrial 24V-scaled analog front-ends. OTP firmware locks the calibration coefficients at production, preventing field tampering with safety-critical setpoints. The 18-SOIC package supports through-hole-friendly PCB layouts.

🔧

Educational and Hobbyist Embedded Projects

The PIC16C58B-40/SO remains popular in educational settings and hobbyist projects where the established PIC16C5X toolchain (MPASM, MPLAB X, PICkit programmers) provides a low-cost entry into 8-bit microcontroller design. Its simple RISC architecture with 33 instructions can be mastered in a single lab session, and the deterministic 100 ns instruction cycle is easy to reason about for assembly-level timing exercises. The 3 KB OTP memory accommodates moderate-sized student projects while enforcing the discipline of committing to a final firmware image. For prototyping, students often start with the Flash-based PIC16F57-I/SO and migrate to PIC16C58B-40/SO only when the firmware is finalized and a cost-optimized production unit is required.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Largest program memory in PIC16C5X family at 3 KB OTP (vs PIC16C57C-40/SO)
  • Highest speed grade in the baseline PIC16C5X family (vs PIC16C58B-20/SO)
  • Industry-standard 18-SOIC pinout with 12 I/O pins (vs PIC16C57C-40/SO)

Notes de conception

The PIC16C58B-40/SO requires a stable 5V supply for full 40 MHz operation. Per Microchip datasheet, VDD must remain between 4.5 V and 5.5 V at this speed grade; for 3.3V-only systems, choose a -20 or -04 speed grade. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 18), and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor at the regulator output to suppress supply droops during I/O switching transients.

The PIC16C58B-40/SO uses One-Time-Programmable EPROM - it CANNOT be re-programmed in-circuit. Any firmware bug discovered after OTP programming requires physical part replacement. Engineers should always prototype with the Flash-based PIC16F57-I/SO (same 18-SOIC footprint and core) and only commit to PIC16C58B-40/SO after firmware is fully validated. Also note that the MCLR pin (pin 5) doubles as VPP during OTP programming - a high-voltage programmer (e.g., PICkit 3) must be used, not a standard ISP.

Keep the external crystal or resonator within 5 mm of OSC1 (pin 6) and OSC2 (pin 7). Place a ground guard ring around the oscillator components to minimize noise coupling into the clock. Avoid routing high-frequency signal traces parallel to OSC1/OSC2; cross them at 90 degrees if necessary. For high-speed designs, add a 100 ohm series termination resistor at the OSC2 output to dampen reflections when driving long traces.

Estimated: at maximum I/O load (12 pins x 25 mA = 300 mA) and 5V supply, the device can dissipate approximately 1.5 W internally. The 18-SOIC package has a typical theta-JA of 100 C/W (per SOIC thermal data), resulting in a 150 C junction temperature rise above ambient - which exceeds the 150 C absolute maximum. Therefore, derate total I/O current to no more than 100 mA continuous per the PIC16C5X datasheet, and use external drivers (ULN2003, MOSFETs) for high-current loads.
