PIC16C662T-04E/PT Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small programmable computer on a single integrated circuit that combines a CPU, memory, and peripherals. Within the broader semiconductor hierarchy, MCUs belong to microcontrollers -> microcomputers -> processors -> semiconductors. The PIC16C6x family specifically targets low-power, cost-sensitive embedded control where deterministic instruction execution (a single-cycle RISC core) and a rich peripheral set matter more than raw clock speed.
Key features of the PIC16C662 include its 14-bit instruction word, 8-level hardware stack, two 8-bit timers and one 16-bit timer/counter, a Watchdog Timer with its own on-chip RC oscillator, an analog comparator, a capture/compare/PWM (CCP) module, and a synchronous/asynchronous serial port (USART/SCI). The part also offers power-saving SLEEP mode, in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) capability, and programmable code protection.
Architecturally, the PIC16C662 uses a Harvard-class RISC core with separate program and data buses, which lets a 14-bit instruction fetch and an 8-bit data read occur in the same Tcy. This yields predictable 4 MHz performance at 4 MHz oscillator input on the -04 speed grade and predictable interrupt latency for real-time control loops.
Typical applications include white-goods and appliance control, low-end industrial automation, automotive body and interior modules, HVAC fan and damper control, and battery-powered instrumentation where the OTP memory and CMOS low-power design provide a favorable cost-per-function ratio. The wide 33-I/O count also makes it suitable for keyboard-scanning, LED-driving, and simple user-interface boards.
When designing with this device, note that OTP memory is one-time programmable and cannot be erased, so firmware must be fully validated before programming. Decoupling, ground-return integrity, and an external oscillator or resonator circuit (if accuracy beyond the internal RC is required) are the three most common layout items to review.

Applications typiques
PIC16C662T-04E/PT convient pour 7 applications: White Goods and Appliance Control, Automotive Body and Interior Modules, HVAC Fan and Damper Control, Battery-Powered Instrumentation, User Interface and Keypad Scanning, Industrial Sensor Interface Boards, Smart Home Edge Controllers.
White Goods and Appliance Control
The PIC16C662T-04E/PT's 33 I/O count, 7 KB OTP memory, and low CMOS operating current make it a cost-effective controller for washing-machine, dishwasher, microwave, and refrigerator boards. The 4 MHz instruction cycle gives 1 us deterministic loop times, which is sufficient for relay and triac sequencing, keypad scanning, and LED display multiplexing. Pin compatibility with the flash-based PIC16F747 family enables field firmware updates without changing PCB layout.
Recommandé
Automotive Body and Interior Modules
With the extended -40C to +125C temperature grade (-E suffix) and 33 digital I/O lines, the PIC16C662T-04E/PT fits body controllers, mirror adjusters, seat controllers, and interior lighting modules. The on-chip USART enables LIN-bus slave communication via an external LIN transceiver. Note that the part is not AEC-Q100 qualified - for new automotive designs migrate to AEC-Q100-qualified PIC16F equivalents or dsPIC33 family members.
Recommandé
HVAC Fan and Damper Control
The PIC16C662's two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer support the multi-channel PWM needed for fan-speed control and damper actuator drive via the on-chip CCP module. Its 4 V to 6 V supply range matches 5 V HVAC board rails directly without an extra LDO. The 176 bytes of RAM are sufficient for proportional control loops, while the 7 KB OTP holds the full control law and look-up tables.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Instrumentation
The PIC16C662's CMOS design, low quiescent current in SLEEP mode, and programmable Watchdog Timer with dedicated RC oscillator make it a viable controller for handheld meters, portable test gear, and remote sensor nodes. The 4 MHz oscillator at 4-6 V keeps active current low while the 14-bit instruction width provides good code density. Brown-out reset and power-on reset protect against battery brown-out events.
Recommandé
User Interface and Keypad Scanning
With 33 digital I/O, the PIC16C662T-04E/PT can scan 8x8 matrix keypads and drive multiplexed 7-segment or 14-segment LED displays directly through current-limiting resistors. The CCP module generates the display refresh timing without software overhead, freeing the CPU for application logic. The 7 KB OTP comfortably stores debounce algorithms, lookup tables, and command interpreters for menu-driven UIs.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor Interface Boards
The PIC16C662's USART/SCI module supports RS-232 and RS-485 communication to host PLCs or SCADA nodes, while its 33 I/O lines interface to digital sensors, optocouplers, and 24 V industrial signal levels via external buffers. The extended temperature grade is essential for cabinet-mounted equipment. The on-chip analog comparator allows threshold detection without an external op-amp.
Recommandé
Smart Home Edge Controllers
Compact 44-pin TQFP form factor, low cost, and on-chip USART allow the PIC16C662T-04E/PT to serve as a node controller for smart-home subsystems such as lighting dimmers, blind motors, and door/window sensors. Its deterministic 1 us instruction cycle is well-suited to dimmer zero-cross detection and triac firing. For new designs prefer the flash-based PIC16F15344 or PIC16F180 family for modern peripherals and Core Independent Peripherals.

Notes de conception
Decouple every Vdd pin with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the package pin. According to the Microchip PIC16C662 datasheet, the device has three Vdd pins (19, 28, 39) and four Vss pins (8, 18, 29, 38) on the TQFP-44 package; each Vdd must have its own decoupling capacitor and the ground returns must form a low-inductance star or grid. Adding a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum polymer cap near the IC supplies the transient current during peripheral switching.
Keep the OSC1/OSC2 traces short and surround them with a ground guard ring to minimize radiated EMI and stray pickup. For a 4 MHz crystal or resonator, route the traces as a differential pair of less than 10 mm length. Place C1 and C2 (typically 15-33 pF) from each oscillator pin to ground as close as possible to the IC. Per Microchip oscillator design notes, using an external parallel-resonant crystal with a series resistor (Rs 100-330 ohm) prevents overdriving the oscillator at low Vdd.
OTP memory is one-time programmable - firmware errors cannot be corrected after programming. Validate the HEX file against the full production test set in a flash-equivalent PIC16F662 or PIC16F747 socket before committing to the OTP die. Also note that the MCLR pin (pin 44) must never be left floating; tie it through a 10 kohm pull-up to Vdd, with the ICSP programmer diode-isolated, otherwise spurious resets will occur in noisy industrial environments.
The 44-pin TQFP (PT) package has a junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of approximately 50 C/W (still air) per the Microchip package outline. At the maximum 4 MHz clock and 6 V supply, the active current of about 5 mA creates only ~30 mW dissipation, so the junction temperature rise is negligible (<2 C). For high-IO-count designs driving many outputs continuously, calculate total dissipation from I/O sink current and ensure junction stays below 125 C for the extended temperature grade.
Informations de conformité
PIC16C662 family is not RoHS compliant per Microchip legacy datasheet notes; uses lead-bearing terminations required by OTP process. Not AEC-Q100 qualified - automotive applications should migrate to PIC16F1939-I/PT or dsPIC33 family. No on-chip EEPROM.
