PIC16C662T-04I/L Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16C662T-04I/L is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the PIC16C family, featuring 7KB (4K x 14) of One-Time-Programmable (OTP) program memory and 176 bytes of RAM, operating at a maximum clock speed of 4 MHz. It is housed in a 44-pin PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) package with J-bend leads, measuring 16.59 mm x 16.59 mm, and is rated for the industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and a set of programmable I/O peripherals. The PIC16C family uses Microchip's classic Harvard-architecture RISC core, which separates program and data buses to allow simultaneous instruction fetch and data access. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, the PIC16C662 sits at: microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> embedded controller -> integrated circuit. OTP variants like this one are programmed once and cannot be erased, making them suitable for mature, fixed-function industrial products where field updates are not required.

Key features of the PIC16C662T-04I/L include 33 programmable digital I/O pins, an integrated analog comparator, a capture/compare/PWM (CCP) module, and a watchdog timer for reliable operation in electrically noisy environments. The 4 MHz oscillator drives a 1 us instruction cycle (4 clocks per instruction), delivering roughly 1 MIPS of throughput, which is sufficient for human-machine interface (HMI) controllers, sensor aggregators, and appliance control boards. The 44-pin PLCC package provides through-hole-friendly J-lead terminations that simplify prototyping and rework while still being surface-mountable on industrial assembly lines.

The device operates from a 2.5 V to 5.5 V supply and includes brown-out reset (BOR) and power-on reset (POR) circuitry to protect against low-voltage programming or lock-up conditions. Its RISC core provides 35 single-word instructions, allowing most operations to complete in one instruction cycle. The architecture is well documented and supported by Microchip's MPLAB development ecosystem, including the MPASM assembler and legacy C compilers.

Typical applications for the PIC16C662T-04I/L include industrial control panels, HVAC thermostat controllers, appliance user interfaces, vending machine logic boards, and legacy embedded products that require a long-lifecycle 8-bit controller with stable, mature firmware. The industrial temperature grade makes it well suited to factory automation and outdoor equipment enclosures.

A key design consideration is that OTP memory cannot be re-programmed; therefore, development and firmware validation should be performed on a UV-erasable PIC16C662 windowed sample or a pin-compatible PIC16F flash variant before committing to OTP production. Engineers should also plan for PCB land pattern compatibility with the 44-PLCC footprint to allow future migration to a flash-based PIC16F equivalent if firmware updates become necessary.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in compatible alternatives, and practical design notes that complement the manufacturer datasheet and help engineers evaluate lifecycle, sourcing, and second-source options for long-running industrial programs.

🏭

Industrial Control Panels

The PIC16C662T-04I/L fits industrial control panels because its industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C), brown-out reset, and watchdog timer deliver reliable operation in factory-floor enclosures with electrical noise and supply transients. The 33 I/O pins directly drive LED indicators, key matrices, and relay coils, while the 8-channel 8-bit A/D reads panel-mounted sensors such as potentiometers and thermistors. With 7 KB of OTP program memory, mature control firmware can be locked in at production, eliminating field tampering and reducing per-unit cost. The 4 MHz clock is fast enough for sub-millisecond scan loops typical of HMI polling. Estimated: at 4 MHz and 5 V, the device draws roughly 2 mA active and 1 uA sleep, well within a panel-mounted linear regulator budget.

🏭

HVAC Thermostat Controllers

The PIC16C662T-04I/L is well suited to HVAC thermostat controllers where fixed-function firmware is desirable and field updates are not expected. The integrated 8-bit A/D converter reads temperature sensors (NTC thermistors or analog temp ICs), while the CCP module generates PWM output to drive triac-fired heater stages or variable-speed fan control. Brown-out reset prevents lock-up during brown-out conditions common with HVAC transformer supplies. OTP memory locks the calibration coefficients at production, ensuring consistent set-point accuracy across units. The 33 I/O lines accommodate multi-stage systems with humidistats, mode switches, and backlit LCD interfaces, while the 1 us instruction cycle easily handles the slow thermal-loop control updates.

🔧

Appliance User Interface Boards

In appliance user interface boards such as washing-machine front panels, dishwasher controls, or microwave ovens, the PIC16C662T-04I/L serves as the central HMI controller. Its 33 I/O pins directly scan capacitive or resistive key matrices, drive 7-segment displays or character LCDs, and toggle buzzer and triac outputs without external logic. OTP memory locks the appliance control firmware at production, eliminating field reprogramming risk and lowering total cost. The 4 MHz clock provides ample throughput for de-bounced key scanning at sub-10 ms rates. Watchdog timer and brown-out reset protect against the brown-out, EMI, and motor-noise conditions typical of white-goods environments.

🔧

Vending Machine Logic Boards

Vending machine logic boards use the PIC16C662T-04I/L to coordinate multi-drop vending mechanisms, bill/coin validators, and dispense motors. The 7 KB OTP program memory holds mature firmware for product-pricing logic, vend-allow protocols (MDB or parallel), and audit-counter functions. Thirty-three I/O lines interface directly with vend motors, optocouplers, and the machine's keypad/display, while the 8-channel A/D monitors bill-validator analog feedback and battery-backed coin-changer lines. Industrial temperature operation tolerates unconditioned vending enclosures. Estimated: a typical vend cycle completes in under 200 ms at 4 MHz, well within the PIC's throughput envelope, leaving spare MIPS for diagnostic and telemetry tasks.

🌐

Sensor Aggregation Nodes

As a sensor aggregation node in industrial monitoring systems, the PIC16C662T-04I/L reads multiple analog and digital sensors, performs local threshold logic, and reports results over a serial interface. The 8-channel 8-bit A/D is sufficient for temperature, pressure transducer, and 4-20 mA loop monitoring, while the integrated analog comparator handles threshold events without CPU intervention. The 176-byte RAM accommodates short rolling buffers and statistical averages, while OTP memory locks the calibration table at production. The 4 MHz clock and 1 MIPS throughput comfortably handle the slow sampling rates (1 to 10 Hz) typical of environmental and process monitoring nodes. Watchdog timer ensures autonomous recovery from bus-induced lock-ups.

🔧

Legacy Embedded Replacement Boards

The PIC16C662T-04I/L is frequently specified for legacy embedded replacement boards in industrial equipment whose original PIC16C66x controllers have failed or reached end-of-life. Because the part retains the same 44-pin PLCC footprint and pinout as its predecessors, it drops directly onto existing PCBs without layout changes. OTP behavior matches the legacy system, ensuring firmware compatibility. The industrial temperature grade tolerates factory environments, and the brown-out reset plus watchdog timer provide equivalent reliability to the original controllers. For long-term sustainability, designers are advised to evaluate migrating to the pin-compatible PIC16F662-I/L flash variant, which can later be reprogrammed in-circuit if firmware updates become necessary.

Données de référence d'ingénierie pour PIC16C662T-04I/L — comparaison, recommandations de conception et informations de conformité.

Guide de sélection

Choose the PIC16C662T-04I/L when designing a fixed-function industrial product that requires a mature 8-bit MCU with locked, immutable firmware (OTP memory), industrial -40C to +85C operation, and the classic 44-pin PLCC footprint that allows direct socket-mount replacement of legacy boards. It is the right choice for HVAC controllers, appliance interfaces, vending boards, and sensor-aggregation nodes where field updates are not required. For new designs, the PIC16F662-I/L flash variant is the recommended long-term alternative because it shares the same 44-PLCC footprint and pinout but offers in-circuit reprogrammability, active lifecycle status, and a 20 MHz clock. The PIC16C662-04I/L (tube packaging) and PIC16C662-04E/PT (TQFP-44) are drop-in alternatives when only the packaging form factor differs; choose the TQFP variant for SMD-only reflow production. Avoid the PIC16F946-I/PT - it is not a drop-in replacement because its 64-pin TQFP package does not match the 44-PLCC footprint.

Notes de conception

PIC16C662T-04I/L uses One-Time-Programmable memory that cannot be erased; never use production OTP parts for firmware development. Develop and fully validate firmware on a windowed CERDIP PIC16C662 sample or, preferably, on the pin-compatible PIC16F662-I/L flash variant. Once a production OTP unit is programmed, a firmware bug requires a board re-spin. Estimated: typical MPASM development cycle on a flash equivalent is 10x faster than iterative OTP programming on windowed samples due to erase-time delays.

Brown-out reset (BOR) and power-on reset (POR) must be configured for the actual supply rail in use. The PIC16C662 BOR thresholds are programmable; for 5 V systems use the 4.0 V threshold, and for 3.3 V systems use the 2.5 V threshold. Per the Microchip datasheet (DS30224D), leaving BOR disabled in industrial environments risks code execution at reduced VDD, which can corrupt EEPROM data and latch-up I/O pins. The internal POR is enabled by default at power-up.

The 44-pin PLCC footprint allows both J-lead soldering (reflow or socket) and through-hole-socket insertion. For prototyping, use a machined-pin PLCC socket (e.g., 3M 8444-21B1-RK-T1) which permits easy device swaps between windowed samples, OTP production units, and PIC16F662-I/L flash equivalents. For production reflow, follow JEDEC J-STD-020 MSL-2 handling: bake at 125C for 24 hours before assembly if the floor-life exposure has exceeded the rated limit. Place a 0.1 uF decoupling cap within 5 mm of each VDD/GND pair (pins 18-20).

At 4 MHz and 5 V VDD, the PIC16C662T-04I/L draws approximately 2 mA active and 1 uA in sleep mode (per datasheet typical curves). The 44-pin PLCC package has a theta_JA of approximately 50 C/W in still air, so at room temperature a continuous-active load will not cause thermal stress. However, in sealed enclosures above 60C ambient, duty-cycle management and use of sleep mode are recommended. Estimated: at 2 mA active, 0.05 mA average (with 2.5% duty cycle), self-heating is negligible.

Route the ICSP clock (RB6/PGC, pin 27) and ICSP data (RB7/PGD, pin 28) traces with short, direct paths to the programming connector, avoiding proximity to high-current switching traces and analog inputs. Place the MCLR/VPP pull-up (typically 10 kohm) close to pin 39, and add a 100 nF capacitor to ground on MCLR/VPP to filter programming-voltage noise. The OSC1/OSC2 pins (8, 9) should be guarded by a ground ring to reduce EMI pickup, especially if a crystal is used instead of an external clock.
