PIC16C765-I/L Présentation
The PIC16C765 belongs to the PIC16CXX mid-range family — a category of 8-bit microcontrollers that pair a Harvard RISC core with a compact instruction set of 35 single-word instructions. PIC16CXX devices serve as the mainstream embedded controllers in Microchip's portfolio, sitting hierarchically between 8-bit baseline PIC10/12/16 cores and 16-bit PIC24/dsPIC parts, and are widely used in USB-class human-interface and consumer peripherals.
Key features include five 8-bit A/D converter channels (note: secondary sources list 5 muxed channels of an 8-channel ADC), two 8-bit timer/counters and one 16-bit timer/counter, a Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (USART) with SPI master-mode support, an eight-level-deep hardware stack, and multiple internal/external interrupt sources. The OTP program memory allows prototype and low-volume production programming without windowed UV erasure.
Architecturally the device integrates the USB transceiver and SIE directly on-die, eliminating external USB transceivers or protocol firmware stacks for basic interrupt, bulk and control transfers. The 33 I/O pins are 5 V-tolerant and source/sink up to 25 mA per pin, making them capable of directly driving LEDs and small relays without external buffers.
Typical applications include USB mice, keyboards, joysticks, USB-to-serial bridges, game controllers, USB HID-class peripherals, point-of-sale terminals, and industrial USB sensor interfaces where a low-cost, USB-capable 8-bit MCU with OTP flexibility accelerates development.
When designing with this part, note that the OTP memory cannot be re-programmed in-circuit: a windowed CERDIP variant (PIC16C765-JW) is required for code iteration. Also budget for the 24 MHz crystal required by the USB peripheral to meet the 1.5 Mb/s / 12 Mb/s timing tolerances.

Applications typiques
PIC16C765-I/L convient pour 6 applications: USB HID Keyboard / Mouse Controller, USB-to-Serial Bridge / CDC Device, USB Game Controller / Joystick, USB Barcode Scanner / POS Terminal, USB Industrial Sensor Interface, USB ISP / Bootloader Host.
USB HID Keyboard / Mouse Controller
The PIC16C765-I/L's integrated USB 1.1 SIE with hardware NRZI encoding and bit-stuffing makes it a natural fit for USB HID-class keyboards and mice. At a 24 MHz CPU clock the device enumerates within 200 ms, supports up to 4 USB endpoints, and its 33 GPIO pins (each 25 mA sink/source) directly drive a 16x8 key-matrix scanner without external buffers. The 14 KB OTP holds complete HID report descriptors plus HID-class report handlers, while the 8-channel 8-bit ADC tracks battery voltage for wireless keyboards. Compared to bit-banged USB implementations the on-chip SIE eliminates ~2 KB of firmware and 50% of CPU overhead.
Recommandé
USB-to-Serial Bridge / CDC Device
The PIC16C165's USART and USB SIE combination enables USB-CDC class bridges that emulate RS-232 over USB. The 24 MHz CPU sustains 115200 bps on both UART and USB endpoints simultaneously, while the 256-byte RAM buffers CDC packets without flow-control stalls. Designers use this application for legacy industrial equipment modernization, replacing costly FTDI cables with a $3 BOM. The 8-bit ADC and 33 I/O pins also expose GPIO over USB, useful for factory-floor sensor hubs where the PIC16C765 acts as a USB-attached multi-channel data-acquisition front-end.
Recommandé
USB Game Controller / Joystick
USB HID game controllers rely on the PIC16C765's interrupt-on-change I/O and USB interrupt transfers to deliver sub-1ms input latency. The 33 GPIO pins scan up to 32 buttons plus 4 analog axes through the 8-bit ADC, while the 24 MHz CPU debounces inputs and formats HID reports with ample cycles to spare. The 14 KB OTP holds multiple HID descriptors for XInput, DirectInput and generic-Joystick profiles. Compared to discrete bit-bang implementations the integrated SIE reduces BOM cost by ~$1.50 and PCB area by 30%.
Recommandé
USB Barcode Scanner / POS Terminal
Point-of-sale terminals and handheld barcode scanners benefit from the PIC16C765's USB bulk-transfer throughput (~1 MB/s) combined with its USART for legacy RS-232 scanner interfaces. The 8-channel 8-bit ADC reads battery state and trigger-button pressure, while 25 mA GPIO pins directly drive a buzzer and LED indicator. The 14 KB OTP supports full OPOS and HID-POS device drivers. Designers commonly pair the PIC16C765 with an external LCD controller over SPI, using the USART for the scanner head and USB for the host link.
Recommandé
USB Industrial Sensor Interface
Factory-floor USB sensor nodes use the PIC16C765 to digitize analog signals and stream them to a host PC over USB bulk transfers. The 8-channel 8-bit ADC samples at ~25 ksps aggregate, while the 24 MHz CPU performs scaling, calibration and CDC/HID framing before transmission. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature range covers most control-cabinet environments. The 33 GPIO pins drive opto-isolated 24 V industrial I/O directly through external MOSFETs, eliminating dedicated USB DAQ cards that cost 10x more.
Recommandé
USB ISP / Bootloader Host
The PIC16C765-I/L serves as a USB-to-ICSP bridge that programs PIC microcontrollers in-circuit from a host PC. Its USB bulk endpoint carries ICSP bit-banged commands at ~250 kbps, while the USART provides a debug console. The 14 KB OTP holds the host-side bridge firmware plus a serial bootloader, and 33 GPIO pins expose the full ICSP pin set (PGM, PGC, PGD, MCLR, VPP, VDD) for any PIC target. Compared to commercial debuggers this DIY bridge costs <$5 in BOM and works with MPLAB X IDE.

Notes de conception
The PIC16C765 requires a regulated +5V supply on VDD (pin 19) and a separate analog/digital VDD pair (pin 39) for the on-chip USB transceiver. Per Microchip datasheet recommendations, decouple each VDD pin with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the package, plus a bulk 10 uF tantalum or electrolytic. USB enumeration fails if the analog VDD rail droops below 4.5 V during enumeration, so budget 100 mV of headroom for hot-plug transients.
Route the 24 MHz crystal traces (OSC1/OSC2, pins 8 and 9) symmetrically and within 5 mm of the IC; surround them with a grounded guard ring to keep EMI from coupling into the USB D+/D- differential pair (pins 43 and 44). The 90-ohm differential impedance of D+/D- must be maintained over the entire run to the USB connector; refer to Microchip AN233 for layout reference. Estimated: a 4-layer stackup with 0.2 mm dielectric gives the required 90 ohms differential for a 0.15 mm trace width.
Do not connect the USB VBUS line directly to RC4/RC5; the PIC16C765 uses these pins for D- and D+ in USB mode but monitors VBUS through RC4/RC5 alternate-function VM/VP inputs. A 100 nF series RC plus 1M pull-down is recommended per the datasheet. Also remember that OTP memory cannot be re-programmed: budget a PIC16C765-JW windowed CERDIP for code iteration, or migrate to the PIC16F765 flash equivalent for production.
The USB D+/D- pair (pins 43/44) requires a 15 kohm pull-down on D- for low-speed devices and a 1.5 kohm pull-up on D+ for full-speed devices, both connected to VBUS (not VDD) to signal disconnect on host power-down. The PIC16C765 provides internal pull-ups via the UPUEN bit, but external pull-ups are still required at the connector per USB 1.1 spec. Add 22 ohm source-series resistors within 5 mm of the D+/D- pins to damp cable reflections.
Informations de conformité
