PIC16F15356T-I/MV Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F15356T-I/MV is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller built on the enhanced mid-range core, offering 32 MHz operation, 28 KB of Flash program memory, 2 KB of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM in a 28-pin UQFN (4x4 mm) package with exposed pad. It integrates the eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology that keeps active current consumption in the microamp range, making it a strong fit for battery-powered and energy-harvesting products. The on-chip peripherals include a 10-bit ADC, two 5-bit and 8-bit DACs, four PWMs, comparators, a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), four Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), two EUSART, and SPI/I2C, providing the digital and analog building blocks needed for sensor conditioning and motor or lighting control without external ICs.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path and a Harvard architecture that separates program and data memory for faster, deterministic instruction fetch. The PIC16F1xxx family is part of the broader PIC microcontroller hierarchy: PIC MCU -> 8-bit PIC16 family -> PIC16F1xxx enhanced mid-range -> PIC16F153xx sub-family with XLP and CIPs. This part specifically belongs to the Microchip PIC16(L)F153XX product family, which the manufacturer positions as the lowest-power 8-bit platform with rich Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs).

Key features include four Configurable Logic Cells that implement AND/OR/XOR/flip-flop functions in hardware, eliminating software polling for state-driven events, and the CWG which generates complementary PWM with dead-band control for half-bridge drivers. The device supports sleep currents below 1 uA typical with the on-board LFINTOSC and watchdog enabled, allowing years of operation from a single CR2032 cell in duty-cycled sensor nodes.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, low-power wireless sensor transmitters, battery-powered home automation devices, LED lighting controllers with analog dimming, and small motor or fan control boards. The wide operating voltage range from 2.3 V to 5.5 V lets it run directly from a single Li-ion cell or a 3.3 V regulated rail.

When designing in the PIC16F15356T-I/MV, plan the PCB thermal copper for the exposed pad to keep theta_JA within the 28-UQFN specification, and configure unused pins as outputs to minimize sleep current. Always program the Configuration Words with the brown-out and watchdog settings appropriate to the end application.

Applications typiques

PIC16F15356T-I/MV convient pour 7 applications: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, LED Lighting Controller with Analog Dimming, Small BLDC or DC Motor Control Board, Home Automation HMI / Sensor Hub, Portable Medical / Wearable Device, Industrial Sensor Transmitter, Consumer Remote Control / IR Transmitter.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16F15356T-I/MV fits IoT sensor nodes because its XLP sleep current stays below 1 uA typical with the LFINTOSC running for watchdog wakeup, while the 10-bit ADC, comparators, and two DACs handle analog front-end conditioning without external parts. At 32 MHz the core wakes in microseconds to take a measurement and transmit it over SPI or I2C to a companion radio, then returns to sleep, enabling years of operation from a CR2032 cell. The 28 KB Flash comfortably holds state-machine sensor stacks plus a wireless protocol glue layer, and the four CLCs implement hardware debouncing and timing without CPU polling.

💡

LED Lighting Controller with Analog Dimming

The PIC16F15356T-I/MV drives multi-channel LED lighting fixtures by using its four PWM channels for direct LED current control and its 8-bit DAC for analog dimming curves, while the Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) produces dead-band-controlled complementary outputs for half-bridge FET drivers when higher voltages are needed. The CLCs combine PWM and a fault comparator to implement hardware over-current shutdown without CPU intervention, preserving the low-power XLP profile. Operating from 2.3 V to 5.5 V lets the same MCU drive 3.3 V logic-level strips and 5 V analog dimming interfaces without a level shifter.

🏭

Small BLDC or DC Motor Control Board

In small brushed-DC or low-power BLDC fan control applications, the PIC16F15356T-I/MV uses its CWG to generate complementary PWMs with programmable dead-band for half-bridge FET drivers, the four PWMs to control additional phases or speed setpoints, and the on-chip comparators for back-EMF zero-cross detection on sensorless BLDC. The 32 MHz enhanced mid-range core executes the commutation state machine with headroom, while the 2.3-5.5 V range supports direct 3.3 V or 5 V motor driver rails. The four CLCs can encode Hall-sensor decoding or fault interlocks in hardware, offloading the CPU.

🏠

Home Automation HMI / Sensor Hub

The PIC16F15356T-I/MV serves as a low-cost sensor hub or HMI controller in home automation, reading push-buttons and rotary encoders via its CLCs (which can implement quadrature decoding in hardware) and driving status LEDs via the four PWMs. The two EUSARTs bridge to a wireless module and a wired RS-485 sensor bus simultaneously, and the SPI/I2C ports connect to environmental sensors. With 28 KB Flash and XLP sleep, the MCU can run a complete Zigbee or Sub-GHz bridge state machine on battery backup during power events.

📱

Portable Medical / Wearable Device

In wearable health monitors and portable medical peripherals, the PIC16F15356T-I/MV combines XLP sleep below 1 uA with the 10-bit ADC to sample biopotential or pulse signals, while the on-chip DACs generate bias voltages for the analog front end. The CLCs debounce mechanical buttons and detect finger-tap patterns without waking the CPU, preserving battery life. The 28-pin UQFN at 4x4 mm fits comfortably on small wearable PCBs, and the industrial -40C to +85C temperature range tolerates body-temperature and outdoor conditions.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Transmitter

The PIC16F15356T-I/MV is well suited to 4-20 mA loop-powered or industrial sensor transmitters because of its 2.3-5.5 V operating range, on-chip 10-bit ADC and 8-bit DAC, and two EUSARTs that can drive both RS-485 and a debug port simultaneously. The CLCs implement HART-style modem signal conditioning or Manchester encoding for proprietary sensor protocols without CPU load, and the brown-out reset protects against industrial power dips. The 32 MHz core executes linearization polynomials and Modbus RTU framing with comfortable margin.

📺

Consumer Remote Control / IR Transmitter

For low-cost IR/RF remote controls, the PIC16F15356T-I/MV uses its PWM and CWG to generate precision 38 kHz or 56 kHz carrier modulation, while the CLCs debounce the keypad matrix without CPU polling. XLP sleep below 1 uA means a pair of AAA cells can power a remote for years, and the 28 KB Flash is enough for full IR code libraries plus RF4CE or BLE pairing stacks. The exposed pad on the UQFN keeps the die cool during repeated transmit bursts, and the 2.3-5.5 V range covers both alkaline and Li-ion powered designs.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Four Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs) implement AND/OR/XOR/flip-flop in hardware (vs PIC16F15325T-I/MV)
  • Memory upgrade path in identical 28-pin UQFN footprint (vs PIC16F15376-I/MV)
  • eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) sleep below 1 uA typical with peripheral wakeup (vs PIC16F15356-I/ML)

Notes de conception

The 28-pin UQFN package has an exposed thermal pad (EP) on the underside that MUST be soldered to a copper pad on the PCB connected to VSS. This pad provides both the main thermal path and the low-inductance ground reference required by the ADC and DAC for clean analog performance. A land pattern with thermal vias to an inner VSS plane is the standard Microchip reference layout.

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 26) and a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the board supply input. The PIC16F15356T-I/MV can wake from sleep in microseconds at 32 MHz, and inadequate decoupling will cause VDD droop and brown-out resets during high-current PWM transitions. For ADC accuracy, add a small ferrite bead between digital and analog VDD if a separate analog rail is used.

Always configure unused I/O pins as outputs driving low (not inputs floating) before entering sleep, because floating CMOS inputs can draw leakage current and destabilize the XLP sleep current spec. Also, disable unused peripherals in the PMD (Peripheral Module Disable) registers - leaving the ADC, comparators, or DACs enabled will keep their bias current flowing even when not in use and increase sleep current well above the 1 uA target.

At typical 32 MHz operation the PIC16F15356T-I/MV draws roughly 5-8 mA active current, dissipating under 40 mW even at 5 V VDD - well within the UQFN-28 thermal envelope (estimated theta_JA around 35 C/W on a JEDEC 4-layer test board per Microchip packaging notes). For high-temperature industrial environments near 85 C ambient, derate by ensuring the exposed pad has at least 100 mm^2 of copper on the top layer for spreading.

When using the 10-bit ADC at high source impedances (> 10 kohm), add an external buffer or sample longer to avoid ADC accuracy degradation - the on-chip sample-and-hold capacitor is small. Place analog input traces away from PWM and switching signals, and use the dedicated analog VDD/VSS pins if available in the layout. The on-chip 8-bit DAC has a low-impedance output buffer, but routing it near high-frequency digital lines will inject noise into the analog output.
