PIC16F18326-E/P Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F18326-E/P is an 8-bit PIC16 microcontroller with a 32 MHz CPU core, 28 KB (16K x 14) of Flash program memory and 2 KB of SRAM, packaged in a 14-pin PDIP through-hole form factor. It is built on an eXtreme Low Power (XLP) architecture with Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) and integrated Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) routing, making it a full-featured general-purpose low-power MCU. The "-E" suffix denotes the Extended (-40C to +125C) industrial temperature grade.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a compact computing device built around an 8-bit data path, integrating CPU, RAM, non-volatile program memory and peripherals on a single CMOS die. Within the semiconductor taxonomy, an MCU is a subclass of microcontroller -> integrated circuit -> semiconductor. The PIC16F18326 sits in Microchip's enhanced mid-range PIC16 family and is part of the broader 8-bit MCU category, typically chosen over 32-bit parts where cost, deterministic code execution and ultra-low standby current matter more than raw compute.

Key features include 256 bytes of EEPROM data memory, a 10-bit ADC with computation, a 5-bit DAC, two SPI/I2C and one EUSART with PPS remapping, two PWM modules, two CCP modules, a CWG, CLC, and NCO for waveform synthesis. The PIC16F18326-E/P integrates a 32 MHz internal oscillator, eliminating external crystal cost in many designs. The XLP technology delivers typical sleep currents in the nanoampere range, with active current roughly 50 uA/MHz, suitable for battery-powered IoT nodes.

The architecture uses a Harvard RISC core with a 14-bit instruction word and 32 MHz internal oscillator, providing 8 MIPS peak throughput. The integrated peripherals are interconnected through the PPS fabric, allowing software-configurable mapping of digital functions to physical pins. This increases routing flexibility without requiring multiple package variants for different peripheral mixes.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered remote controls, consumer appliance interfaces, LED lighting controllers, and small motor control loops where the CWG and PWM peripherals generate complementary drive waveforms. The 28 KB Flash accommodates a substantial application stack including USB stacks, bootloader, or BLE command libraries.

When designing with this device, verify that the chosen clock source has acceptable accuracy for UART baud-rate tolerance. For sleep-mode designs, gate unused peripherals in firmware and use the dsPIC/PIC "DOZE" and "SLEEP" modes to minimize active quiescent current; this typically yields standby current below 1 uA.

Données de référence d'ingénierie pour PIC16F18326-E/P — comparaison, recommandations de conception et informations de conformité.

Guide de sélection

Choose PIC16F18326-E/P when you need the largest Flash (28 KB) within Microchip's PIC16F183xx family in a 14-pin PDIP through-hole package with PPS routing and XLP low-power architecture. Choose PIC16F18325-E/P if 14 KB Flash is sufficient for a smaller firmware footprint at slightly lower cost. Choose PIC16F18324-E/P (7 KB) or PIC16F18323-E/P (3.5 KB) for very simple firmware. Choose PIC16F18313-E/P only when board space is at a premium and minimal memory is acceptable. Avoid the legacy PIC16F1829-E/P unless you must interface to existing firmware written for that family. For non-DIP packages choose PIC16F18326-I/SO or PIC16F18326-I/SS variants.

  • PPS routing flexibility for mixed-function pins (vs PIC16F1829-E/P)

Notes de conception

Estimated: at VDD=3.3V with the CPU active at 32 MHz and all peripherals enabled, the PIC16F18326-E/P draws roughly 2-4 mA; in Sleep mode with peripherals gated, current drops to nanoampere range per the XLP specification. For battery-powered designs, gate unused peripherals via PMD registers before entering Sleep, and use the RTCC or IOC to wake the CPU. Decouple VDD with 100 nF ceramic placed within 5 mm of the VDD pin.

Route MCLR as a high-impedance input with a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; add a 100 nF cap to ground on MCLR for reset noise immunity. Keep the ICSPDAT and ICSPCLK traces short (under 50 mm) and away from switching signals to avoid in-circuit programming glitches. For mixed-signal layouts, separate analog (ADC) traces from digital PWM/CCP outputs with a ground guard ring around the analog pin group.

Do not leave the MCLR pin floating - either tie it to VDD via 10 kohm pull-up or drive it from a supervisor. PPS remapping must be unlocked via the PPSLOCK register sequence before configuration writes; forgetting this is the most common cause of "peripheral doesn't work" debug sessions. The internal 32 MHz oscillator has +/- 2% factory trim accuracy; for UART baud rates requiring tighter tolerance, switch to the HFINTOSC with PLL or an external crystal via the FOSC configuration bits.

The 14-pin PDIP package has thermal resistance theta_JA of approximately 70 C/W, but at typical MCU current draw (<10 mA) self-heating is negligible (<1 C rise). For high-temperature +125C environments, derate clock frequency per the datasheet's thermal operating profile. Avoid placing the MCU adjacent to power components on the PCB; provide at least 5 mm spacing or a thermal cutout in the copper pour.
