PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO is an 8-bit PIC® XLP™ microcontroller featuring 56KB (32K x 14) of Flash program memory, 4KB RAM, and 256B EEPROM, integrated in a 64-pin VQFN (9x9) package with exposed thermal pad. It operates up to 32 MHz from a 3V supply and is AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive applications.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory, and programmable I/O peripherals. The PIC16F19197 belongs to the PIC® XLP™ 16F family, which sits within the broader 8-bit MCU category — a class favoured for low-power deterministic embedded control where simplicity, cost, and ultra-low standby current outweigh raw throughput.

Key features of this device include eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology with an integrated LCD charge pump, intelligent analog peripherals such as a 12-bit ADC2 with Computation, a 5-bit DAC, and a low-power comparator, plus core independent peripherals (CIPs) like the Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), PWM, CCP, Zero-Cross Detect (ZCD), and Peripheral Pin Select (PPS). These building blocks let designers offload tasks from the CPU, lowering active duty cycle.

Architecturally, the PIC16F19197 uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with a hardware multiplier and 14-bit instruction word, providing predictable interrupt latency and deterministic execution. The Device Information Area (DIA) and unique device ID aid calibration and traceability. Its high-current I/O and integrated charge pump simplify direct LCD glass driving without external bias circuitry.

Typical applications include battery-powered LCD consumer devices (thermostats, blood pressure monitors), automotive instrument clusters and HVAC control panels, industrial HMI panels with segmented displays, IoT sensor nodes with local LCD readouts, and metering equipment. The XLP sleep current in the nanoampere range supports multi-year coin-cell operation.

When designing, allocate sufficient PCB area for the 9x9 mm VQFN thermal pad and route the exposed pad to a large ground copper pour. Configure PPS carefully to avoid remapping conflicts with the LCD segment lines, and reserve the charge-pump capacitor pins per the pinout.

Applications typiques

PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO convient pour 6 applications: Battery-Powered Thermostat with LCD, Automotive Instrument Cluster, Medical Glucose / Blood Pressure Meter, Industrial HMI Control Panel, IoT Sensor Node with Local LCD Readout, Smart Meter (Electricity / Water / Gas).

🏭

Battery-Powered Thermostat with LCD

The PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO's 56KB Flash, 4KB RAM, integrated segmented LCD driver, and on-chip charge pump make it ideal for battery-powered thermostats where display legibility must coexist with multi-year battery life. Its 12-bit ADC2 reads thermistor or analog temperature sensors with 0.1C resolution, and the XLP sleep mode in the nanoampere range keeps average current draw well under 10 µA — even with the LCD continuously updating. The CCP and PWM peripherals drive relay triacs or open-drain outputs for HVAC load control. With AEC-Q100 qualification, the same silicon design can transition from consumer thermostats into automotive cabin climate modules without firmware rework.

🚗

Automotive Instrument Cluster

The PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO's AEC-Q100 qualification and extended -40C to +125C operating range suit it for automotive instrument clusters driving segmented LCD speedometers, tachometers, and fuel gauges. The integrated charge pump delivers the bias voltages needed for high-contrast TN/STN glass without external DC-DC converters, while PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) routes the CWG, PWM, and CCP signals to any available I/O — simplifying PCB layout under tight dashboard enclosures. Core independent peripherals (CWG, NCO) generate stepper-motor waveforms for analog gauge pointers with zero CPU overhead, freeing the core for CAN-LIN comms and gauge math.

💊

Medical Glucose / Blood Pressure Meter

In medical glucose meters and blood pressure monitors, the PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO's 12-bit ADC2 with Computation (ADC2) averages multiple samples autonomously, reducing software overhead while improving the signal-to-noise ratio of biosensor readings. The integrated 5-bit DAC supports stimulus generation for impedance-based measurements, and the low-power comparator enables battery-level monitoring without waking the CPU. With 56KB Flash, OEMs can store multi-language UI strings, calibration curves, and historical reading logs directly on-chip. The XLP nanoampere sleep current extends coin-cell life across thousands of measurements per year.

🏭

Industrial HMI Control Panel

The PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO suits industrial HMI panels with segmented LCD status displays thanks to its Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs): CWG, PWM, and ZCD handle zero-cross switching, relay timing, and motor interlocks without CPU load. PPS remaps peripherals to any I/O pin, allowing PCB layout reuse across product variants with different connector pinouts. The ZCD peripheral detects AC line zero-cross events for SCR/TRIAC dimming and motor phase control, while the 12-bit ADC2 reads 4-20 mA loop sensors with 0.1% accuracy. AEC-Q100 qualification provides headroom for factory-automation environments subject to wide temperature swings.

🧩

IoT Sensor Node with Local LCD Readout

For IoT sensor nodes that display readings directly on a segmented LCD without a smartphone app, the PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO offers a self-contained solution. The integrated charge pump drives 4-mux or 8-mux LCD glass up to 5V bias from a 3V battery, while the ADC2 + DAC + low-power comparator handle sensor excitation, readout, and threshold detection with the CPU asleep. The 32 MHz CPU clock enables on-chip Modbus or proprietary protocol framing before transmitting over UART. With 256B EEPROM, calibration constants survive firmware reflash and battery swaps — critical for long-life remote sensors.

⚡

Smart Meter (Electricity / Water / Gas)

The PIC16F19197-E/5LXVAO fits electricity, water, and gas meters where segmented LCD readouts must stay readable for 10+ years on a single battery. Its XLP sleep currents in the nanoampere range and integrated charge pump eliminate external bias components, slashing BOM cost. The CWG peripheral produces anti-tamper magnetic sensor excitation, while the ZCD detects mains zero-cross for electricity-meter power calculations. With 56KB Flash, manufacturers can implement DLMS/COSEM or proprietary metering protocols, time-of-use tariffs, and tamper logs without external memory. AEC-Q100 grade future-proofs designs targeting utility infrastructure.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Largest Flash in the 64-VQFN PIC16F1919x family (vs PIC16F19196T-I/MR)
  • AEC-Q100 automotive grade at extended temperature (vs PIC16F19195-E/PT)
  • Same silicon, broader automotive temperature envelope (vs PIC16F19197-I/5LXVAO)
  • Integrated LCD charge pump eliminates external bias (vs PIC16F18876-E/P (TQFP-64, no LCD charge pump))

Notes de conception

The 64-VQFN (9x9 mm) package relies on the exposed thermal pad (pin 64 / EP) for primary heat conduction to the PCB. Solder the EP directly to a continuous ground copper pour of at least 1 square inch on the top layer, supplemented by thermal vias to inner ground planes. Without adequate EP soldering, junction-to-ambient thermal resistance rises sharply and may cause thermal shutdown under sustained ADC2 conversions plus active CIPs.

Place the VCAP decoupling capacitor (pin 47) within 2 mm of the pin using a short trace to the ground pour. The VLCD1 / VLCD2 / VLCD3 charge-pump pins (48-50) require low-ESR flying capacitors routed with symmetric, short traces to minimise voltage ripple on the LCD bias rails. Keep all LCD segment traces away from switching power and clock signals to avoid ghosting on the display glass.

Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) remapping looks flexible but introduces hidden constraints: the same pin cannot host multiple remapped peripherals simultaneously, and the LCD segment pins 1-44 share their I/O functions with display drive, requiring careful PPS unlock sequences. Always consult the PPS input/output map table in the family datasheet before finalising pin assignments, and reserve unmapped I/O for in-system programming / debugging.

Take advantage of XLP sleep modes (Doze, Idle, Sleep with RTCC) to achieve nanoampere standby current for battery-powered designs. Disable unused peripherals via the PMD (Peripheral Module Disable) registers before entering Sleep to eliminate their bias currents. The ADC2 with Computation (ADC2) can scan channels autonomously and wake the core via interrupt, eliminating the need for periodic CPU wake-ups.

Route the 32 MHz crystal traces (OSC1 / OSC2, pins 58-59) symmetrically with ground guarding on both sides and keep them within 5 mm of the MCU. Place the AVDD / AVSS pins (45-46) filter capacitors directly at the pins with a star-ground connection to the digital ground near the EP. Avoid crossing analog and digital traces under the MCU to prevent ADC2 sampling noise.
