PIC16F627-20/SS Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash), volatile data memory (RAM), and a configurable set of peripheral interfaces. The PIC16F627 sits within the broader hierarchy of 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor IC. Microchip's PIC16F family is among the longest-lived mid-range 8-bit architectures and is widely taught in universities and used in commercial products where deterministic timing, low cost, and ease of development outweigh the need for high-performance ARM-class processing.
Key features of the PIC16F627-20/SS include a Power-on Reset (POR), a Power-up Timer (PWRT), an Oscillator Start-up Timer (OST), a Brown-out Detect (BOD) block, and a Watchdog Timer (WDT) with its own dedicated on-chip RC oscillator for reliable operation. Additional peripherals include a multiplexed MCLR pin, programmable weak pull-ups on PORTB, a USART for serial communication, two 8-bit timers and one 16-bit timer, an analog comparator, and an internal voltage reference. The device is supported by the MPLAB X IDE, the XC8 C compiler, and the legacy PICkit programmers, easing development.
Architecturally the device is built on Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, allowing instruction fetch and data access to occur in the same instruction cycle. This delivers deterministic throughput - most instructions execute in a single 200 ns cycle at 20 MHz - which is one reason the PIC family is favoured for time-sensitive control loops.
Typical applications include appliance control boards, sensor interface modules, low-end consumer electronics, lighting controllers, and hobby/educational kits. The wide third-party ecosystem and stable toolchain reduce time-to-market for designers replacing older PIC16F84A or PIC16F627 designs. When selecting the -20/SS variant, ensure the 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply matches the speed grade - the older /04 and /20 grades differ only in oscillator rating and Vdd range. This page synthesises distributor pricing, drop-in SSOP-20 alternatives, and design considerations that the bare manufacturer datasheet does not present.

Applications typiques
PIC16F627-20/SS convient pour 6 applications: Appliance Control Boards, Sensor Interface Modules, Low-End Consumer Electronics, Lighting Controllers, Educational and Hobby Kits, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety).
Appliance Control Boards
The PIC16F627-20/SS fits washing-machine, dishwasher and microwave control panels because its 16 I/O pins, two analog comparators and USART drive relays, keypads and triac interfaces at 5 V. At 20 MHz the Harvard RISC core executes a 35-instruction cycle in 200 ns, so control loops run deterministically and meet safety timing budgets. The 1.75 KB Flash accommodates state-machine firmware with room for protocol stacks, and the 224 byte RAM keeps scan tables resident without external memory. Brown-out detect and watchdog timer with dedicated RC oscillator guard against supply droop and firmware runaway. Industrial temperature grades and the SSOP-20 surface-mount footprint suit compact appliance PCAs.

Sensor Interface Modules
The PIC16F627-20/SS interfaces analog and digital sensors in HVAC, security and industrial telemetry nodes. Two on-chip analog comparators and a programmable voltage reference let the MCU directly condition thermistor, photocell and 4-20 mA loop signals without external op-amps. The USART connects to RS-485 transceivers or low-power RF modules, while the 16-bit timer captures pulse-output flow meters. Brown-out detect protects against brownouts in long cable runs. Programmable weak pull-ups on PORTB eliminate external resistors for switch and one-wire sensors. The SSOP-20 footprint fits inside small sensor housings.
Recommandé
Low-End Consumer Electronics
The PIC16F627-20/SS powers remote controls, toys, educational kits and small home appliances where 8-bit performance and ultra-low BOM cost outweigh raw MIPS. Its 1.75 KB Flash holds user-interface state machines and IR protocols, while the SSOP-20 package keeps the PCB under 10 mm square. The Harvard RISC pipeline executes each instruction in one cycle so a 50 mA LED PWM dimmer or a buzzer tone generator responds without jitter. Brown-out detect and the watchdog timer with its own on-chip RC oscillator protect battery-low conditions. Microchip's free MPLAB X IDE and XC8 compiler accelerate firmware iteration.
Recommandé
Lighting Controllers
The PIC16F627-20/SS drives LED dimmers and DMX-512 slave nodes because its 16-bit timer produces 16-bit PWM resolution at 5 V for flicker-free dimming curves. The USART receives DMX packets at 250 kbaud, while the analog comparators monitor zero-cross for triac phase-control of incandescent and dimmable LED loads. Programmable weak pull-ups on PORTB interface directly to tactile switches, and the brown-out detect prevents spurious dim levels during mains brownouts. The 20 MHz clock leaves enough headroom for the UART, PWM and protocol stack simultaneously. SSOP-20 fits slim in-fixture PCBs.
Recommandé
Educational and Hobby Kits
Universities and makers favour the PIC16F627-20/SS for embedded-systems courses because the PIC16F62X architecture is documented in textbooks, the free MPLAB X IDE and XC8 compiler support Windows/macOS/Linux, and the PICkit programmers target the SSOP-20 footprint directly. Students can blink an LED, drive a 7-segment display, or implement a UART bootloader using the on-chip USART, two analog comparators and 16 I/O lines - all without external peripherals. The 1.75 KB Flash accommodates introductory C projects, and the 128-byte EEPROM stores non-volatile parameters. The 20 MHz instruction throughput keeps labs responsive during debugging.
Recommandé
Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)
The PIC16F627-20/SS controls low-speed body electronics such as door-lock modules, mirror adjusters and interior lighting timers where 8-bit performance, 5 V operation and the SSOP-20 footprint suffice. Its brown-out detect and watchdog timer guard against automotive cranking transients and supply dropouts. Two analog comparators interface directly with Hall-effect sensors and current shunts. The 1.75 KB Flash fits protocol stacks for LIN-bus slaves via the USART plus a software bit-bang layer. Note: for safety-critical automotive systems, designers should evaluate the PIC16F627-20I/SS industrial-grade variant or migrate to AEC-Q100-qualified PIC16F1xxx parts.

Notes de conception
The PIC16F627-20/SS requires a clean 5 V rail: place a 100 nF ceramic bypass capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin and a 10 uF tantalum or ceramic bulk capacitor near the supply entry point. The brown-out detect (BOD) block must be configured in configuration bits to match the minimum Vdd of 4.5 V; enabling BOD prevents code corruption during mains dips. The MCLR pin should be tied to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up resistor, with a 100 nF capacitor to ground for noise immunity, unless external reset is required.
Route the crystal traces (OSC1/OSC2) as short as possible and guard them with a ground pour to minimise capacitive coupling from switching signals. Keep the crystal within 5 mm of the MCU and avoid routing digital signals underneath. If using the internal RC oscillator mode (not available on -20/SS but on -628), still keep OSC1/OSC2 traces short to avoid stray pickup. Place the ICSP clock/data lines (RB6/RB7) on outer PCB layers accessible to the PICkit probe.
Do not assume the PIC16F627-20/SS supports 3.3 V operation - the /20 speed grade requires 4.5 V to 5.5 V. For 3.3 V systems, choose the PIC16F627-04/SS (4 MHz) or PIC16F627A-I/SS (20 MHz, 2.0-5.5 V). The watchdog timer must be enabled in configuration bits AND periodically cleared (CLRWDT) in firmware, or it will reset the MCU unexpectedly. Also: do not leave OSC1 floating when using an external crystal - tie the crystal across OSC1/OSC2 with the datasheet-recommended load capacitors.
The PIC16F627-20/SS USART pins (RB1/RX, RB2/TX) are 5 V TTL-level and tolerant of 3.3 V inputs but not of higher voltages. Add a 100 ohm series resistor on RB2/TX when driving long cables to limit ringing. For RS-485 half-duplex networks, drive the MCP2551 or MAX485 transceiver from the USART and use a software-direction bit on another I/O pin for DE/RE control. Enable programmable weak pull-ups on PORTB for switch inputs to eliminate external resistor networks.
