PIC16F627AT-E/SO Présentation
An 8-bit Flash microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path, integrating CPU core, non-volatile Flash program memory, RAM, EEPROM, and a rich set of peripherals into one package. It sits within the hierarchy microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor IC, and historically defined the low-cost, deterministic, low-power edge-computing class now challenged by 32-bit Cortex-M0 cores.
Key features include a 20MHz maximum CPU clock yielding 200ns instruction execution, a Harvard RISC architecture with only 35 single-word instructions, an integrated 4MHz internal oscillator, 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory, a USART for asynchronous serial, a Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, two analog comparators, a programmable voltage reference, and 16 I/O pins with individual direction control. Power is supplied from 2.0V to 5.5V (5V nominal for the /SO variant), and nanoWatt power-management features offer sleep currents in the microamp range.
The PIC16F627A core uses a 14-bit instruction word with separate program and data buses, allowing simultaneous fetch and access. Its RISC pipeline executes one instruction per four oscillator cycles, and interrupt handling plus a hardware stack of eight levels simplify real-time firmware. The peripheral set targets analog signal conditioning (comparators + Vref) and digital communication (USART), making it well suited for sensor-interface and motor/relay-control products.
Typical applications include consumer appliances, automotive body electronics, industrial control boards, remote controls, security sensor nodes, and battery-powered metering. The 18-pin SOIC provides the smallest footprint variant within the PIC16F627A family, while the 28- and 40-pin siblings add more I/O and analog channels.
When designing, validate that the 5V (4.5V-5.5V) supply range of the /SO part matches the system rail, place a 100nF decoupling capacitor within 5mm of VDD, and configure MCLR with the recommended 10k pull-up. The integrated 4MHz oscillator eliminates an external crystal in cost-sensitive designs but trades absolute accuracy for BOM reduction.

Applications typiques
PIC16F627AT-E/SO convient pour 6 applications: Consumer Appliance Control, Automotive Body Electronics, Industrial Sensor Interface, Remote Control and IR Transmitter, Battery-Powered Security Sensor, Smart Metering and Utility Modules.
Consumer Appliance Control
The PIC16F627AT-E/SO fits consumer appliance control boards because its 1.75KB Flash holds a typical washing-machine or microwave UI state machine while the integrated USART links to a display/keyboard front-panel MCU. The CCP module drives TRIAC phase-angle control for heating elements at 20MHz with 200ns instruction determinism. Two on-chip comparators monitor zero-cross and overcurrent signals directly, eliminating external analog ICs. The 4MHz internal oscillator removes the cost of a crystal for non-timing-critical user-interface firmware. Extended -40C to +125C temperature grade supports oven-adjacent and refrigerator-compressor electronics.
Recommandé
Automotive Body Electronics
The PIC16F627AT-E/SO is well suited to automotive body modules such as lighting controllers, mirror positioners, and seat switch interfaces where the extended -40C to +125C grade and 5V supply range satisfy under-hood and cabin thermal requirements. Its 16 I/O pins drive relay coils and read switch matrices directly with internal weak pull-ups, while the CCP module generates PWM for LED dimming and motor speed control. The USART bridges to a CAN/LIN gateway MCU. nanoWatt sleep mode keeps quiescent current below 100uA so the module does not drain the 12V battery when the vehicle is parked for weeks.
Recommandé
Industrial Sensor Interface
The PIC16F627AT-E/SO acts as a smart front-end for industrial 4-20mA loop sensors, conditioning and digitizing analog signals using its two on-chip comparators plus the programmable voltage reference. The USART streams processed readings to a host PLC or gateway over RS-485 at up to 115.2kbps using the internal 4MHz oscillator. The 20MHz CPU clock executes averaging filters and linearization math in real time at deterministic 200ns per instruction. Extended temperature grade and SOIC-18 wide-body package survive vibration and conformal-coated environments.
Recommandé
Remote Control and IR Transmitter
The PIC16F627AT-E/SO is a natural fit for universal remote controls and IR/RF transmitter modules because its 1.75KB Flash stores thousands of RC5/RC6/SONY protocol codes while the CCP module generates the 36kHz-40kHz carrier waveform via PWM. Sleep currents below 1uA on the nanoWatt architecture extend battery life to multiple years on a coin cell. The 18-pin SOIC package is small enough for slim handset enclosures, and the internal 4MHz oscillator avoids a crystal to minimize cost and PCB area.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Security Sensor
The PIC16F627AT-E/SO anchors wireless PIR motion and door/window sensor nodes by handling the sensor interface, A/D math, and RF link hand-off to a sub-GHz transceiver via USART. nanoWatt sleep current below 1uA combined with watchdog-timer wake-ups draws less than 20uA average, enabling multi-year operation from a single CR2032 cell. The on-chip comparators detect tamper-switch and low-battery conditions without extra components. The wide 4.5V-5.5V supply also supports 3x AA battery packs with linear regulation.
Recommandé
Smart Metering and Utility Modules
The PIC16F627AT-E/SO is widely used in electricity, water and gas meter peripherals for data logging, tamper detection, and isolated UART communication to a metrology front-end. Its 128-byte EEPROM stores tariff tables and calibration constants across power cycles without external memory. The on-chip CCP and 16-bit timer modules drive stepper-motor valves or latching relays with millisecond precision. Extended -40C to +125C operation and the SOIC-18 wide-body package survive outdoor enclosure thermal stress and humidity testing.

Notes de conception
Place a 100nF (0.1uF) X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5mm of the VDD pin (pin 18) and a bulk 10uF tantalum or aluminum capacitor on the same rail to suppress switching transients when the MCU exits Sleep mode. For designs using the 4MHz internal oscillator, add an additional 10uF bulk cap if the source impedance exceeds 2 ohms. A ferrite bead in series with VDD is recommended when the MCU shares the rail with relays or solenoids to block injected noise into the analog comparator reference.
Always configure the MCLR pin (RA5/MCLR/VPP, pin 6) as a reset input by setting the MCLRE configuration bit during programming. Without the MCLRE fuse set, RA5 becomes a general-purpose I/O and a floating or noisy reset condition can prevent startup. Add a 10k pull-up on MCLR to VDD and a 100nF capacitor to ground for noise immunity. Do not connect MCLR directly to VDD without the pull-up - this disables in-circuit debug and prevents ISP programming.
Route the crystal traces (RA6/OSC2 and RA7/OSC1) on the top layer with a ground guard ring and keep them within 5mm of the MCU when an external crystal is used. For internal-oscillator designs, leave RA6 and RA7 available as GPIO and avoid routing high-frequency signals under the package. Maintain a continuous ground plane under the SOIC-18 footprint and stitch vias around the perimeter every 5mm to suppress radiated emissions from the CCP PWM output.
The USART pins (RB1/RX/DT and RB2/TX/CK) are not 5V tolerant when interfacing to a 3.3V host because the PIC16F627A VDD is 5V. Add a 10k series resistor on the TX line and a Schottky diode clamp (BAT54S) on the RX line to protect against over-voltage. For long-trace (>50mm) USART connections at 115.2kbps, place a 100pF capacitor to ground on each line to damp reflections. Enable the USART's hardware address-detection mode to simplify RS-485 multi-drop firmware.
