PIC16F627AT-E/SS Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16F627AT-E/SS is a flash-based, 8-bit CMOS microcontroller in the PIC16 family, delivering 20MHz maximum clock speed, 1.75KB (1K x 14 words) of program Flash memory, and 224 bytes of SRAM, all integrated in a 20-pin SSOP package. It supports supply voltages from 3.0V to 5.5V, with the tested operating point at 4.5V to 5.5V, and provides 16 digital I/O lines plus a 10-bit ADC, dual analog comparators, internal 4MHz oscillator, and 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory. The "A" silicon revision adds nanoWatt power management features that dramatically reduce active and sleep currents versus the legacy PIC16F627.

What is a PIC16 microcontroller? The PIC16 family sits in the 8-bit RISC microcontroller tier (PIC10/12/16/18/24/32), itself a sub-category of microcontrollers and embedded controllers within integrated circuits. PIC16 devices use a 14-bit instruction word, 35 single-word instruction set, and 200ns instruction execution at 20MHz, designed for cost-sensitive deterministic control where predictable timing matters more than raw throughput. They are positioned between PIC10/12 baseline parts (smaller, lower pin count) and PIC18 mid-range parts (16-bit instruction, more peripherals), giving engineers a balance of capability and code density.

Key features include nanoWatt Technology for sub-microamp sleep currents, an internal 4MHz precision oscillator (eliminating external crystal cost), Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, USART for serial communications, and a programmable brown-out reset. The PIC16F627AT-E/SS also integrates a high-performance comparator with programmable reference, watchdog timer with its own on-chip RC oscillator, and an In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) interface for field-upgradable firmware.

The architecture combines a Harvard-style program/data bus separation, 8-level deep hardware stack, and direct/indirect addressing modes that simplify C and assembly porting. The "A" generation brings 8MHz internal oscillator precision and enhanced PWM resolution versus older PIC16F627 silicon, making it attractive for designers needing more accurate timing without external components.

Typical applications include consumer appliance controls, battery-powered sensor nodes, IR remote controls, LED drivers, small motor controllers, and industrial sensor interfaces. The wide operating voltage range plus nanoWatt sleep makes it a frequent choice for mains-powered and battery-backed products where standby current dominates the energy budget.

When designing with this device, budget for ICD/ICSP header pads even on production boards to allow firmware updates and in-field debug; the ICSP pins (RB6/RB7) must be accessible. The 224-byte SRAM and 1.75KB Flash constrain firmware complexity, so design code accordingly or migrate to PIC16F88/PIC16F819 if more memory is needed.

The PIC16F627AT-E/SS is well suited for consumer appliance control such as coffee makers, microwave oven keypads, washing-machine user interfaces, and air-conditioner remotes, where 1.75KB of Flash easily fits state-machine firmware and the 16 I/O pins drive key matrix, LED indicators, and triac interfaces. The nanoWatt sleep current drops the standby budget to under 1uA for mains-backed designs with sleep-mode compliance, and the 20MHz clock plus CCP module generates zero-cross detection and PWM for heater control. The internal 4MHz oscillator further eliminates a crystal, reducing BOM cost on price-sensitive high-volume products. ICSP pins RB6/RB7 must remain accessible for production-line firmware updates.

🎧

IR Remote Control Transmitter

The PIC16F627AT-E/SS drives IR remote control transmitters for TVs, set-top boxes, and consumer audio gear where low cost and low standby current dominate the BOM. Its 20MHz instruction cycle generates precise 38kHz/40kHz carrier frequencies for RC5/RC6/SIRC protocols with sub-microsecond timing accuracy, while the 16 I/O lines drive the key matrix and IR LED driver transistor. nanoWatt sleep currents below 1uA extend alkaline-battery life to multi-year timescales. The internal oscillator eliminates two external capacitors and the resonator, cutting the BOM by approximately $0.20 per unit. For 2-way or learning remotes, the PIC16F628AT-E/SS upgrade path doubles Flash to 3.5KB.

🧩

Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Node

The PIC16F627AT-E/SS is a frequent choice for battery-powered wireless sensor nodes, where sub-microamp sleep current is essential for multi-year battery life. nanoWatt Technology with INTOSC and sleep modes allows the MCU to spend >99% of time in deep sleep, waking only when a sensor threshold is exceeded or on a timer interrupt. The internal 4MHz oscillator removes the always-on crystal that would otherwise drain coin cells. The 2 analog comparators provide hardware threshold detection without ADC power-up, while the USART interfaces to sub-GHz transceivers. For mesh-networked or higher-throughput sensor nodes, the PIC16F648AT-E/SS with 7KB Flash offers room for protocol stacks.

💡

LED Lighting Controller

The PIC16F627AT-E/SS drives LED lighting controllers including RGB color-mixing fixtures, dimmable downlights, and decorative strips. The wide 3.0V to 5.5V supply range allows direct connection to 3.3V or 5V LED driver ICs without level shifters. nanoWatt sleep cuts standby power when fixtures are off, addressing energy-efficiency regulations. The 2 analog comparators detect zero-cross for triac dimmer interfacing, eliminating a dedicated zero-cross detector IC.

🏭

Small DC Motor and Fan Controller

The PIC16F627AT-E/SS implements small DC motor and fan speed controllers in appliance, HVAC, and PC-peripheral markets. Its CCP module plus 20MHz instruction cycle deliver closed-loop PID control at 10kHz update rates, sufficient for BLDC commutation and brushed DC speed regulation. The 2 analog comparators sense back-EMF for sensorless commutation or current-limit protection, while the USART reports telemetry to a host controller. nanoWatt Technology reduces standby for always-connected smart fans. For more demanding multi-axis motor control, the PIC16F1938-I/SS with 4 CCP modules supports simultaneous multi-motor drives.

🔧

Industrial Sensor Interface Module

Notes de conception

ICSP pins RB6 (PGC) and RB7 (PGD) must remain accessible even on production boards. Per the Microchip programming specification, populate a 6-pin 0.1" header or land pads on the PCB edge so that ICSP programmers like PICkit 3, PICkit 4, or MPLAB Snap can be connected for in-field firmware updates and bug fixes. If the design uses low-voltage programming (LVP, via the RB4/PGM pin), the PGM pin must be tied appropriately. Always include a pull-up on MCLR (pin 4) to VDD; if using ICSP, route the MCLR/VPP line directly to the programming header with no decoupling capacitor on the MCLR node.

Place a 100nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to VDD (pin 14) and VSS (pin 5), with a trace length under 5mm. Add a bulk capacitor (1uF to 10uF) within 10mm of the supply pins for higher-current transients caused by GPIO switching. For battery-powered designs, the VDD bulk capacitor also holds up the supply during sleep/wake transitions where inrush current can momentarily drop voltage. nanoWatt sleep current is well below 1uA when VDD is stable, but watch for current spikes on I/O transitions if driving high-capacitance loads directly.

Do not confuse the legacy PIC16F627 (non-A silicon) with the PIC16F627A. The original PIC16F627 lacks nanoWatt Technology and has a less precise internal oscillator. According to the Microchip datasheet, the PIC16F627A-revision parts (including PIC16F627AT-E/SS) provide better ADC linearity, lower sleep current, and enhanced PWM. Migration from F627 to F627A is drop-in at the PCB level but requires firmware recompilation because the configuration bits and ADC registers differ. Always specify the A-revision when ordering or migrating designs to avoid needing a firmware rewrite.

The SSOP-20 footprint uses 0.65mm pitch pads, which is achievable on standard 2-layer FR-4 boards with 0.15mm trace/space rules. Per IPC-7351 guidelines, the SSOP-20 land pattern should include a copper pad under the package body (not connected to any net) to balance solder fillets. For high-vibration or harsh-environment designs, add corner keepout zones around the IC and consider underfill. The exposed pad variant (if applicable) should be soldered to a thermal copper pour of at least 10mm^2 for adequate thermal dissipation; however, the SSOP-20 does not include an exposed thermal pad, so thermal management is via standard PCB copper pours on the VDD/VSS traces.
