PIC16F72-I/SP Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that processes data 8 bits at a time using a Harvard or modified-Harvard architecture. Within the semiconductor taxonomy it sits in the hierarchy: 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor IC. The PIC16F72 belongs to Microchip's PIC16 mid-range family, designed for cost-sensitive embedded control where deterministic interrupt response and low power matter more than raw throughput.
Key features of the PIC16F72-I/SP include a 5-channel 8-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), two additional 8-bit timers (Timer0, Timer1, Timer2), a Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, and a Synchronous Serial Port (SSP) configurable as either 3-wire SPI or 2-wire I2C. The device operates from 2.0 V to 5.5 V supply and supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) for field updates.
The PIC16F72-I/SP uses Microchip's mid-range 14-bit instruction set with only 35 single-word instructions, which dramatically shortens the firmware development cycle. Its architecture supports interrupt-driven control loops, on-chip RC oscillator operation, and low-power SLEEP modes for battery applications. The 28-SPDIP package provides easy through-hole prototyping on breadboards and evaluation boards, while pin-compatible SOIC and SSOP variants exist for surface-mount production.
Typical applications for the PIC16F72-I/SP include HVAC control systems, security alarm panels, smoke and CO detectors, automotive body controllers, washing machine controllers, small appliance drivers, and remote sensor reading stations. The combination of on-chip ADC, PWM, and serial peripheral interfaces makes it a strong fit for closed-loop mixed-signal control.
When designing with this part, choose external passive components within the datasheet-recommended ranges, place the decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD, and respect the absolute maximum VDD of 7.5 V. For new designs, also evaluate the pin-compatible PIC16F73/PIC16F74 if more memory or peripherals are required.

Applications typiques
PIC16F72-I/SP convient pour 6 applications: HVAC Control Systems, Security Alarm Panels, Smoke and CO Detectors, Washing Machine Controllers, Small Appliance Drivers (Coffee Makers, Blenders), Remote Sensor Reading Stations.
HVAC Control Systems
The PIC16F72-I/SP is well suited for HVAC thermostat and damper control because its 5-channel 8-bit ADC can simultaneously monitor indoor temperature, humidity, setpoint potentiometer and outdoor-air sensor with no external multiplexer. The CCP module generates PWM outputs up to 20 kHz for driving triac-fired damper motors and proportional valves, while the SSP provides I2C connectivity to external EEPROM for logging setpoint schedules. With 128 bytes of RAM and 3.5 KB FLASH, it can host a complete scheduling and PID algorithm. Operating from 2.0-5.5 V allows direct 24 VAC rectification or 3.3 V regulator supply. Designers should place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD and route ADC traces away from triac switching nodes.
Recommandé
Security Alarm Panels
In intrusion and fire-alarm panels, the PIC16F72-I/SP acts as the central controller scanning 8-12 zone inputs through its ADC and digital I/O. The hardware SSP supports I2C communication with keypad and LCD modules, while the CCP generates PWM tones for the siren driver. With industrial -40 to +85 C operating range and 22 I/O pins, the part easily handles a 6-zone hardwired panel plus an I2C keypad bus. The 128-byte RAM is sufficient for event buffers; the 3.5 KB FLASH stores zone definitions, dialer protocols and self-test routines. For UL-listed designs, add an external watchdog timer such as MCP130 to meet fault-tolerance requirements.
Recommandé
Smoke and CO Detectors
Smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors benefit from the PIC16F72-I/SP's low-power SLEEP modes and on-chip ADC for photoelectric or electrochemical sensor readout. The microcontroller periodically wakes from sleep, drives the LED through a CCP PWM channel, reads the scattered-light sensor via the ADC, and applies a moving-average filter in firmware. The 22 I/O pins support the sounder driver, test button, hush timer and a low-battery indicator. Operating voltage 2.0-5.5 V matches a 9 V battery regulated through a low-dropout regulator, giving multi-year battery life. Designers should reserve FLASH for self-diagnostic routines and end-of-life signaling as required by UL 217.

Washing Machine Controllers
The PIC16F72-I/SP is a classic choice for white-goods controllers where cost, reliability and deterministic interrupt latency matter most. It drives a 7-segment LED display through multiplexed GPIO, reads water-level and temperature sensors through the 5-channel ADC, and switches motor/valve triacs via the CCP and GPIO pins. The SSP provides an SPI interface to an external EEPROM storing cycle programs. Industrial temperature rating (-40 to +85 C) survives the under-counter thermal environment of laundry equipment. Migration from older PIC16C7X designs is straightforward because the PIC16F72 maintains code and pin compatibility with the legacy C-series parts.

Small Appliance Drivers (Coffee Makers, Blenders)
For consumer small appliances, the PIC16F72-I/SP integrates all required control functions: ADC reads thermistor or weight sensor, PWM from CCP controls a heater or motor, GPIO drives LEDs and switches, and SSP talks to a display or NFC tag. Its 8-bit PIC16 architecture has a long firmware track record in this segment and a deep MPLAB X toolchain with Hi-Tech C and XC8 compiler support. The 28-SPDIP package is breadboard-friendly for prototyping, then transitions to SOIC-28 (PIC16F72-I/SO) for high-volume reflow production. Designers should budget ~1 KB of FLASH for safety and timing routines that meet IEC 60335 functional-safety requirements.

Remote Sensor Reading Stations
Battery-powered remote sensor stations use the PIC16F72-I/SP for low-duty-cycle sampling of temperature, pressure or soil-moisture sensors, then transmitting readings via a UART-controlled radio module (bit-banged since no USART on this device). The 2.0-5.5 V supply range accepts a single Li-ion or 3x AA battery, while SLEEP currents as low as 1 uA extend field life to several years. The 22 I/O pins drive external SPI sensors through the SSP and actuate a low-side FET for the radio enable line. For LoRa or Sigfox add-on boards, the PIC16F72 can serve as the application controller while the radio handles the PHY layer.

Notes de conception
Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 14) and a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the regulator output. The PIC16F72's internal ADC draws transient current during conversion - insufficient decoupling causes voltage ripple that couples into the ADC result register. For battery applications, add a 1 M-ohm pull-down on MCLR to prevent unintended resets through leakage paths.
Route the crystal traces (OSC1/OSC2) short and symmetric, guard them with a ground ring, and keep them away from switching traces or PWM outputs. The 28-SPDIP footprint gives ample room for ground pour on both sides of the board; tie all unused I/O pins to defined logic states (VSS or VDD) to minimize SLEEP current. Leave the ICSP header (PGC/PGD/MCLR/VDD/VSS) accessible on production boards to allow field firmware updates without desoldering.
When using ADC channels, place a small RC filter (typically 1 k-ohm + 100 nF) on each analog input to limit source impedance and suppress switching transients. Configure ADCON1 to digital-disable any unused ADC pins, or they will float and inject noise into adjacent active channels. For high-accuracy readings, set the acquisition time to a minimum of 19.5 us at 20 MHz and average 4-16 samples in firmware.
Do not connect anything to pin 28 (RE0/AN5) without first configuring ANSEL - the pin defaults to analog input and will float high-impedance if not enabled. The PIC16F72 does NOT have a hardware USART - implement UART through software bit-banging or migrate to PIC16F88 for hardware serial. The internal oscillator is NOT factory-calibrated on this device; applications requiring tight baud rates must use an external crystal.
