PIC16F874-10E/L Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash/EEPROM), volatile data memory (RAM), and peripheral blocks (timers, ADC, communication controllers). The PIC16F family is positioned within Microchip's mid-range 8-bit portfolio, sitting between baseline PIC10/12 devices and enhanced PIC18 parts, and is widely used in industrial control, automotive body electronics and consumer appliances where deterministic interrupt response and low BOM cost matter more than raw compute throughput.
Key features of this device include 33 digital I/O lines, 8 channels of 10-bit ADC, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, a capture/compare/PWM (CCP) module, an analog comparator, and a 5V supply operating range from 4 V to 5.5 V. The on-chip Flash program memory supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) and in-circuit debugging, allowing firmware updates and debug without removing the part from the board. The 'E' suffix denotes the industrial temperature grade (-40C to +125C) and the '/L' suffix denotes the 44-pin PLCC package.
Typical applications include industrial sensor interfaces, motor control signal conditioning, HVAC fan/valve controllers, and white-goods user interface boards. The wide ADC channel count and rich timer resources make it well suited for closed-loop feedback designs that require multiple analog inputs and PWM outputs simultaneously. For new designs Microchip recommends the pin-compatible PIC16F884 as a modern migration target with more memory and peripherals.
When designing with PIC16F874-10E/L, ensure the MCLR reset circuit follows Microchip application note AN587 and place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor close to each VDD pin. The 44-PLCC package is a through-hole J-lead variant suited for socketed legacy and industrial assemblies, not high-vibration automotive under-hood environments where QFN packages are preferred.

Applications typiques
PIC16F874-10E/L convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Sensor Interface Board, HVAC Fan and Valve Controller, Consumer Appliance User Interface, Motor Drive Signal Conditioning, White-Goods Control Board (Legacy/Socketed), Educational and Hobbyist Embedded Platform.
Industrial Sensor Interface Board
The PIC16F874-10E/L is well suited for industrial sensor interface boards where multiple analog inputs and digital outputs must be read and conditioned at modest data rates. Its 8-channel 10-bit ADC handles temperature, pressure, level and flow sensor inputs simultaneously, while the 10 MHz core runs a 200 ns instruction loop fast enough for 1 kHz sampling per channel with margin for filtering. The 33 digital I/O lines drive relays, optocouplers and LED indicators, and the hardware USART links to a host PLC or HMI over RS-485. Industrial -40C to +125C temperature grade allows deployment in factory-floor enclosures without additional thermal conditioning. The 44-PLCC package is socketable, simplifying field replacement in legacy installations. Choose this MCU when deterministic interrupt latency, low BOM cost and proven PIC ecosystem matter more than raw compute.
Recommandé
HVAC Fan and Valve Controller
The PIC16F874-10E/L fits HVAC fan and valve controllers that need precise PWM and analog feedback in a compact MCU. Its CCP/PWM module drives triac-trigger optocouplers or solid-state relays for fan speed control, while the 16-bit timer captures tachometer pulses for closed-loop RPM regulation. The on-chip analog comparator enables zero-crossing detection for line-voltage triac timing without external circuitry. With 7 KB of Flash, control algorithms, soft-fail modes and Modbus or BACnet stack stubs fit comfortably. The 5V supply aligns with HVAC 24VAC-derived DC rails, and the industrial temperature grade covers unconditioned rooftop or basement installations. Use this part for retrofit controllers that must drop into existing PLCC socketed boards.
Recommandé
Consumer Appliance User Interface
The PIC16F874-10E/L is a strong choice for consumer appliance user-interface boards where button scanning, LED indication, seven-segment or character-LCD driving and buzzer control must coexist with a low-cost MCU. The 33 I/O lines directly key matrix-scanned keypads up to 4x4 plus dedicated function buttons, while timers handle debounce, LED multiplexing and tone generation for piezo buzzers. Its USART links to the main appliance control board for status exchange. In-circuit serial programming (ICSP) lets production lines flash firmware and calibration constants through a 5-pin header without removing the part, lowering assembly cost. The 5V supply and PIC ecosystem familiarity shorten development for white-goods OEMs with large installed engineering bases.
Recommandé
Motor Drive Signal Conditioning
The PIC16F874-10E/L supports motor-drive signal conditioning in low-voltage brushed DC and small stepper applications. Its 8-channel ADC samples current shunt, back-EMF and thermistor feedback signals simultaneously, while the CCP/PWM module generates base or gate-drive timing signals. The 16-bit timer performs input capture for Hall-sensor or encoder feedback, enabling closed-loop velocity control. With 192 bytes of RAM, a control loop running every 1 ms with PID terms, ramp tables and fault flags fits without strain. The hardware SPI links to external gate-driver or resolver chips, and the USART reports telemetry to a host controller. Industrial temperature grade covers motor-bearing-housing mounting.

White-Goods Control Board (Legacy/Socketed)
The PIC16F874-10E/L is the canonical MCU for legacy white-goods control boards designed around socketed 44-pin PLCC footprints. Dishwasher, washing-machine and oven control boards from the early-2000s through mid-2010s frequently adopted this exact part, and many service-depot boards still rely on it. Its 5V supply is directly compatible with relay and triac drive rails, the 8-channel ADC reads thermistor and water-level sensors, and the 33 I/O lines drive seven-segment displays, keypads and indicators. The PLCC socket allows fast field replacement by service technicians. For new white-goods designs, Microchip recommends migrating to PIC16F884 in QFN/SSOP, but for legacy board repair and refurbishment the PIC16F874-10E/L remains the spec-compatible choice.

Educational and Hobbyist Embedded Platform
The PIC16F874-10E/L is popular in educational labs and hobbyist projects because of its accessible PLCC socket, generous I/O count and the maturity of the PIC16 toolchain. Its 35-instruction RISC architecture is teachable in a single semester, the 8-channel ADC and PWM module demonstrate real mixed-signal control concepts, and the ICSP interface works with low-cost PICkit programmers. Students can prototype with the PLCC through-hole variant for breadboarding and migrate to SOIC/QFN footprints later. The 7 KB Flash holds complete lab firmware including bootloader, control loops and diagnostic UART output. Hobbyists benefit from abundant example code, application notes (AN556, AN587) and a worldwide PIC community. Choose this MCU when teaching 8-bit fundamentals or building socketed through-hole prototypes.

Notes de conception
Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each of the three VDD pins (11, 29, 42) on the PIC16F874-10E/L, plus a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the board supply entry. The PIC16 family is sensitive to VDD ripple during Flash programming (ICSP); noisy rails can cause programming failures. Tie unused digital I/O to VDD or VSS through 10 kohm resistors to prevent floating inputs from drawing shoot-through current and disrupting ADC accuracy.
The MCLR pin (pin 1) must have a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD and a 100 nF capacitor to VSS to form a proper reset network per Microchip application note AN587. During ICSP programming the MCLR pin is driven to VPP (about 13V), so any circuitry attached to MCLR must tolerate that voltage - do not wire MCLR directly to a logic output without a series resistor or Schottky clamp. Also ensure the PGD/PGC pins (RB7/RB6) are not loaded with capacitance above the datasheet limit during ICSP, otherwise programming fails mid-Flash-write.
On the 44-PLCC board layout, keep the analog inputs (RA0-RA5, RE0-RE2) physically separated from switching signal traces and route them over a contiguous ground pour to minimize ADC noise coupling. Place the 10 MHz crystal (or resonator) close to OSC1/OSC2 (pins 8/9) and guard-trace the crystal traces with grounded copper to reduce radiated EMI. The PLCC socket allows field replacement but adds ~5 mm of lead inductance; keep high-speed signals (SPI, USART) on inner PCB layers if available, or use short traces to the socket pads.
