PIC16LF15375T-I/ML Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF15375T-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC16 microcontroller from the PIC16(L)F153xx family, running up to 32 MHz with 14 KB Flash program memory, 1 KB RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 44-pin QFN (8x8 mm) package with an exposed thermal pad. It operates across a wide 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply window, providing 36 GPIO pins and integrating Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as four 10-bit PWMs, a 5-bit/8-bit DAC, a comparator, a Configurable Logic Cell (4x CLC), Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), 10-bit ADC, and two EUSART plus SPI/I2C serial interfaces. The 'LF' prefix and 'XLP' branding indicate eXtreme Low-Power silicon, designed for battery-powered applications with deep-sleep currents in the nanoampere range.

Background: An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path, optimized for embedded control tasks. In the broader taxonomy, the PIC16LF15375 belongs to microcontrollers -> embedded MCUs -> microcontrollers ICs -> integrated circuits -> semiconductors. 8-bit MCUs remain popular in cost- and power-sensitive applications where the throughput of 32-bit cores is unnecessary, such as consumer appliances, sensor hubs, IoT endpoints, and human-machine interface (HMI) subsystems.

Key features include Microchip's eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology with sleep currents below 100 nA typical, Core Independent Peripherals that offload tasks from the CPU, peripheral pin select (PPS) for flexible I/O mapping, and an integrated temperature indicator. The 36 GPIO pins are 5V-tolerant in input mode (when the device is powered at 3.3V), and the device supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) and debugging via standard Microchip tools. Operating temperature spans -40 C to +85 C industrial grade.

The device is built around an enhanced mid-range PIC16 core with a hardware multiplier and a 14-bit instruction word. The 32 MHz internal oscillator drives 8 MIPS throughput, while the instruction cache and branch predictor accelerate loop execution. The integrated 10-bit ADC supports up to 28 channels in the 44-pin variants, and the CWG peripheral can synthesize complementary PWM outputs with dead-band control for half-bridge driver applications.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered consumer devices, LED lighting controllers, small appliances, home automation peripherals, and industrial sensor interfaces. The wide operating voltage and rich CIP set also suit it for sensor fusion front-ends and wearable health monitors where nanoamp sleep current is essential.

When designing with this part, pay attention to the exposed thermal pad (EP) on the QFN-44 package, which must be soldered to a sufficient copper pour for mechanical and thermal integrity. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of each power pin, and respect the ICSP programming pin assignments (typically RB6/ICSPCLK and RB7/ICSPDAT) when laying out the PCB to avoid blocking debug access.

Applications typiques

PIC16LF15375T-I/ML convient pour 6 applications: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Consumer Appliance Control Board, LED Lighting Controller, Home Automation Sensor Hub, Industrial Sensor Interface / Transducer Front-End, Wearable Health Monitor.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16LF15375T-I/ML fits battery-powered IoT sensor nodes because its 1.8-3.6 V VDD range covers single-cell Li-ion and dual-AA chemistries directly, while XLP technology drops sleep current below 100 nA typical to extend coin-cell life to multiple years. The 14 KB Flash comfortably hosts a wireless-MAC stack plus sensor drivers, and the 10-bit ADC with up to 28 channels handles multiple analog sensors (temperature, light, humidity) without an external mux. Two EUSARTs allow simultaneous Wi-Fi/BLE module control and a wired debug console. CLCs implement glue logic in hardware, freeing the CPU from bit-banging. Trade-off: 8-bit throughput limits on-edge DSP; consider a Cortex-M0+ for FFT-class workloads.

🏭

Consumer Appliance Control Board

The PIC16LF15375T-I/ML suits consumer appliance control boards (coffee makers, blenders, small kitchen appliances) thanks to 36 GPIO pins, 4 PWMs, and the Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) which produces complementary drive signals with dead-band for triac or half-bridge motor control. The 5-bit/8-bit DACs set reference voltages for analog trim without external parts, while two comparators handle zero-cross detection or overcurrent sensing. The 32 MHz CPU executes 8 MIPS, plenty for user-interface debounce, PID loops, and display refresh. Compared with a 32-bit Cortex-M0+ at similar price, the PIC16F15375 wins on peripheral integration at this cost tier.

💡

LED Lighting Controller

The PIC16LF15375T-I/ML is ideal for entry-level LED lighting controllers because the four 10-bit PWMs and CWG can synthesize multi-channel dimming and color-mixing waveforms without external timers. The 32 MHz core executes lighting-effect state machines in real time, while the integrated comparators implement constant-current feedback without an op-amp. The 1.8-3.6 V range supports direct Li-ion drive, useful in portable luminaires. The 14 KB Flash allows a full DMX/RGB protocol stack. Trade-off vs a dedicated LED-driver IC: a discrete approach costs less at low channel counts but lacks built-in thermal foldback.

🏠

Home Automation Sensor Hub

The PIC16LF15375T-I/ML serves as a wired home-automation sensor hub because two EUSARTs plus SPI/I2C allow simultaneous RS-485 (Modbus) and local sensor-bus connections, while the 10-bit ADC samples multiple analog channels (light, temperature, occupancy) at low duty cycle. PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) reassigns peripheral functions to almost any GPIO, simplifying PCB routing for crowded sensor hubs. XLP sleep modes keep idle current under 100 nA, important for always-on wall-powered but energy-conscious designs. The 36 GPIO are sufficient for status LEDs, pushbuttons, and a local OLED interface without external expanders.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Interface / Transducer Front-End

The PIC16LF15375T-I/ML fits industrial 4-20 mA or 0-10 V sensor-interface front-ends because the wide 1.8-3.6 V supply range tolerates loop-powered supplies, while two comparators handle window-comparator alarm outputs without an external op-amp. The 5-bit and 8-bit DACs generate precise excitation currents for RTD bridges, and the CLC implements hardware linearization. The 10-bit ADC samples up to 28 channels for multi-transducer boards. The -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature grade covers factory-floor environments. Trade-off: for higher-resolution (16/24-bit) measurement chains, pair with an external delta-sigma ADC like the MCP3561.

💊

Wearable Health Monitor

The PIC16LF15375T-I/ML is well-suited to wearable health monitors (heart-rate, SpO2, step-counter peripherals) because XLP sleep currents below 100 nA preserve coin-cell life for months. The 36 GPIO support multiple LED drivers for optical heart-rate sensing, and the 10-bit ADC samples photodiode returns at low duty cycle. The 1.8 V minimum VDD lets the design run directly from a single CR2032 cell. The CLC handles precise PWM timing for LED pulsing without CPU wakeups, improving battery life. Compared with a Cortex-M0+ wearable MCU, this PIC16 wins on cost and sleep current; it loses on math throughput for advanced DSP filters.

Notes de conception

The PIC16LF15375T-I/ML 44-QFN package exposes a thermal pad (EP) that must be soldered to a grounded copper pour with at least 8 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill) to the inner ground plane. Without proper EP soldering, the package's thermal resistance rises sharply and the device may not meet datasheet specifications under sustained load. Estimated: theta_JA with EP soldered and 1 oz copper pour is roughly 30 C/W versus >80 C/W unsoldered.

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor (X7R, 10 V or higher) within 2 mm of each VDD/AVDD pin, with the ground return short and direct to the nearest VSS/AVSS pin. For noisy analog applications, add a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the AVDD pin and a ferrite bead between VDD and AVDD traces. This is critical for ADC accuracy above 9 effective bits and for clean reference voltages to the internal DAC and comparators.

ICSP programming pins RB6 (ICSPCLK) and RB7 (ICSPDAT) must not be permanently pulled high or low at reset - they are shared with GPIO and the debugger drives them during programming. If your design places a strong pull-up on RB6/RB7, programming can fail. Add 10 kohm series resistors or weak pull-downs if external circuitry requires those lines. Also remember that pins with analog functions must have their ANSEL bits cleared to act as digital GPIO.

Route the ICSP signals (RB6, RB7) to a 6-pin header or test pad cluster so the PICkit/SNAP programmer can be attached without removing the MCU. Even if the design does not require in-circuit debugging, leaving ICSP accessible reduces rework cost. Avoid long parallel traces to RB6/RB7 next to noisy switching traces to prevent programming glitches.

Estimated: at 32 MHz with all peripherals active, the PIC16LF15375T-I/ML core current is around 4-5 mA. With proper EP soldering to a 1 oz copper pour of at least 100 mm^2, the junction temperature rise at room ambient is below 10 C. In sealed enclosures with no airflow, derate clock speed or enable Sleep modes to avoid thermal shutdown.
