PIC16LF1567-E/MV Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small computer-on-a-chip built around an 8-bit data bus CPU with on-chip Flash, RAM, and peripherals. The PIC16LF1567 belongs to the broader hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded microcontroller -> RISC MCU -> PIC16 family -> 8-bit PIC -> semiconductor. The PIC16 core uses a Harvard architecture with separate program/data buses, enabling single-cycle instruction execution except for branches.
Key differentiating features include the dedicated mTouch® capacitive sensing peripherals (hardware CVD), two independent 10-bit ADCs (instead of the usual one), integrated charge time measurement unit hardware, multiple PWMs, and 36 general-purpose I/O lines. The dual-ADC architecture with CVD is specifically engineered for capacitive touch and proximity sensing applications, eliminating the CPU overhead of bit-banging or external ADC sequencing.
Architecturally, the PIC16LF1567 integrates an 8-bit ALU, 14-bit instruction word, hardware multiplier, 32kHz and 32MHz LF/HF internal oscillators, brown-out reset, watchdog timer, and multiple serial interfaces (I2C, SPI, EUSART). The 600 ksps aggregate ADC throughput is split between two ADCs that can operate independently or in interleaved CVD mode for touch decoding.
Typical applications include mTouch® capacitive touch key/proximity sensors, slider/wheel touch interfaces, general-purpose 8-bit MCU designs with rich analog front-end needs, low-power battery-powered IoT sensor nodes, consumer human-machine interface (HMI) panels, and touch-enabled appliance control boards.
Design consideration: because the 40-UQFN package has an exposed thermal pad that is also the primary ground, designers must solder the EP to a properly stitched ground plane; floating the EP degrades ADC noise performance and causes thermal stress during reflow. Always enable the WDT in production firmware for robustness against code lockups.

Applications typiques
PIC16LF1567-E/MV convient pour 6 applications: mTouch Capacitive Touch Keypads, Capacitive Slider and Wheel HMIs, Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes, Industrial Control Panels with Touch UI, Consumer Appliance Front Panels, General-Purpose 8-bit MCU with Rich Analog.
mTouch Capacitive Touch Keypads
The PIC16LF1567-E/MV is purpose-built for mTouch® capacitive touch keypads. Its two integrated 10-bit ADCs combined with hardware CVD modules can sustain up to 600 ksps aggregate sampling across 34 analog channels, allowing 20-30 keys to be scanned with sub-10ms latency without CPU bit-banging. The 1.8-3.6V VDD range and XLP low-quiescent-current design let the device sleep between scans, drawing only nanoamps when idle, while an integrated 32 MHz HF oscillator eliminates external crystals for cost-sensitive consumer products such as microwave ovens, induction cooktops, and washing-machine control panels.
Recommandé
Capacitive Slider and Wheel HMIs
Linear sliders and rotary wheels require continuous position tracking across multiple adjacent electrodes. The PIC16LF1567-E/MV's dual-ADC architecture with hardware CVD is well-suited because each ADC can sample alternating electrodes in parallel, while the core computes centroid interpolation in software. The 14 KB Flash is enough for advanced gesture libraries and the 1 KB SRAM supports multi-channel sample buffers. Designers should allocate at least one PWM channel for LED backlight feedback and use the EUSART for debug telemetry during prototype bring-up.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes
Battery-powered sensor nodes benefit from the LF variant's 1.8-3.6V operation and XLP nanoWatt XLP sleep currents. The PIC16LF1567-E/MV can wake from sleep on ADC threshold or pin-change interrupt, take a reading with its dual 10-bit ADCs, transmit via the EUSART to a companion radio, and return to sleep - all on a single CR2032 cell for months. The wide 34-channel analog front end supports multi-sensor boards (temperature, humidity, light, gas) without external analog muxes. Designers should route the exposed pad (EP) to a contiguous ground pour to maintain ADC noise performance at low VDD.
Recommandé
Industrial Control Panels with Touch UI
Industrial HMIs in factory automation need robust capacitive touch behind thick glass or plastic overlays, plus extended -40 °C to +125 °C operation. The PIC16LF1567-E/MV is qualified to that industrial temperature range, and its hardware CVD module handles the high-CNR (channel-to-noise ratio) decoding required for proximity wake-up. The 32 MHz core executes industrial protocols (Modbus RTU over EUSART, I2C sensor reads) while concurrently driving the touch scan loop, and 36 GPIO lines drive status LEDs, relay coils and buzzer PWM without external expanders.
Recommandé
Consumer Appliance Front Panels
Appliances such as coffee machines, air purifiers, smart ovens and dishwashers increasingly replace mechanical buttons with capacitive touch overlays. The PIC16LF1567-E/MV's combination of mTouch hardware CVD, dual 10-bit ADCs, PWM outputs and small 40-UQFN footprint makes it well-suited for compact front-panel PCAs. Its 1.8V-3.6V VDD range matches 3.3V regulated supplies commonly used in these products, and the integrated 32 kHz LF oscillator plus 32 MHz HF oscillator eliminate external timing components, reducing BOM cost on price-sensitive consumer goods.
Recommandé
General-Purpose 8-bit MCU with Rich Analog
Beyond touch, the PIC16LF1567-E/MV is a strong general-purpose 8-bit MCU for designs that need multiple analog inputs. Applications include HVAC thermostat boards, multi-channel data loggers, low-cost motor-control feedback boards, and LED lighting controllers that need analog dimming. The 14 KB Flash and 1 KB SRAM are sufficient for typical small-control firmware, and 36 GPIO lines support rich peripheral mixing. Designers migrating from older PIC16F parts can usually reuse the same XC8 toolchain and ICD programming headers with no board changes.

Notes de conception
The 40-pin UQFN package (5x5 mm) has an exposed thermal pad (EP, pin 40 / AVSS) that doubles as the primary analog ground reference. The EP MUST be soldered to a contiguous, properly stitched ground plane on the top or bottom PCB layer. A floating EP causes severe ADC noise, voltage-reference drift, and thermal stress during reflow. Recommended thermal via pattern: 4-9 thermal vias in a 3x3 array under the pad, tied to the inner ground plane. Without these vias junction temperature can exceed 125 °C in high-ambient enclosures.
Place the AVDD and AVSS pins (39, 40) with a 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible to the AVDD pin; a ferrite bead between digital VDD and analog AVDD is recommended if the user is sharing a single 3.3V rail. Route ADC analog traces away from switching traces (PWM, EUSART) and keep analog trace impedance below 50 Ω with a ground keepout on either side. Use a ground pour on the top layer under the UQFN footprint, stitched with vias to the inner ground plane every 5-10 mm.
The MCLR pin (pin 4 / RA3) is the device master clear and is active-low; tie it to VDD through a 10 kΩ pull-up resistor and add a 100 nF capacitor to ground for decoupling noise spikes. Do NOT leave MCLR floating - floating MCLR causes intermittent resets. For mTouch designs, never route digital signals (PWM, EUSART) directly under the touch electrodes on the opposite PCB layer - use a hatched ground plane instead. Ensure CVDTX/CVDRX traces are as short as possible to preserve signal integrity.
When using the EUSART at high baud rates (e.g., 115200 bps and above), ensure the TX/RX traces are length-matched and routed over a continuous ground plane to maintain signal integrity. The internal 32 MHz HF oscillator is factory-calibrated to within ±1 % typical but can drift ±2-3 % across the full -40 to +125 °C range; for applications requiring tight UART baud accuracy, use an external high-accuracy crystal on the OSC1/OSC2 pins (where available) rather than the internal HF oscillator.
