PIC16LF1704-E/P Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory (Flash), data memory (RAM), and configurable I/O on a single die. The PIC16F170x family specifically targets low-power and mixed-signal embedded designs by combining an 8-bit PIC® RISC core with 12-bit ADC, 8-bit DAC, op-amps, comparators, and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs), enabling autonomous analog signal conditioning without CPU intervention. The "LF" prefix designates the wide-voltage 1.8V–3.6V variant optimized for battery-powered designs.
Key features include 4 KB Flash (7 KB total program space per the 4K x 14 word organization), 512 bytes of RAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM, 12 I/O lines, and an internal 32 MHz oscillator. The 14-pin PDIP package supports breadboard prototyping and hand-soldered designs. On-chip peripherals include 10-bit ADC, 5-/8-/9-bit DAC, two operational amplifiers, two comparators, an 8-bit timer, and enhanced USART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), and EUSART interfaces.
Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered consumer devices, LED lighting controllers, capacitive-touch user interfaces, low-cost motor control, and portable medical accessories. The XLP technology provides nanoWatt sleep currents below 100 nA in deep sleep modes, enabling multi-year battery life in standby.
When designing with this part, ensure VDD stays within 1.8V–3.6V and reserve a programming/debug pin pair (ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT) accessible to a PICkit programmer. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the IC pins to suppress digital switching transients.

Applications typiques
PIC16LF1704-E/P convient pour 6 applications: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, LED Lighting Controller, Capacitive-Touch User Interface, Low-Cost Motor Control, Portable Medical Accessory, Automotive Interior Lighting Module.
Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node
The PIC16LF1704-E/P's 1.8–3.6 V wide-voltage range and nanoWatt XLP sleep current below 100 nA make it ideal for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes. With 7 KB Flash and 512 B RAM it can run a small sensor-fusion loop while the 12-bit ADC and on-chip op-amp condition sensor signals directly on-die. The 32 MHz core supports periodic wake-measure-transmit cycles; the MSSP drives an I2C sensor and the EUSART links to a sub-GHz radio. Two-cell AA or CR2032 cells power the entire node for years.
Recommandé
LED Lighting Controller
Driving multi-channel LED strips requires accurate PWM and analog current sensing. The PIC16LF1704-E/P provides 12-bit ADC for current shunt monitoring, on-chip op-amps for closed-loop current regulation, and 8-bit/16-bit timers with PWM peripherals for smooth dimming. The 32 MHz clock supports 100 kHz+ PWM frequencies to avoid audible flicker, while XLP sleep modes drop quiescent draw between user inputs. The 14-pin PDIP form factor simplifies breadboard prototyping of lighting drivers.
Recommandé
Capacitive-Touch User Interface
The mTouch® capacitive touch sensing peripheral combined with the PIC16LF1704-E/P's on-chip comparators and op-amps enables buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors without external components. The 12 I/O lines support up to 12 touch channels, while the 32 MHz core executes mTouch firmware at full speed. Wide 1.8–3.6 V operation suits battery-powered touch remotes and white-goods panels where standby current must remain below 1 µA between mandatory room updates.
Recommandé
Low-Cost Motor Control
The PIC16LF1704-E/P integrates two op-amps and two comparators for back-EMF sensing in low-cost BLDC or brushed DC motor controllers. The 8-bit PWM with complementary outputs and dead-band control drives MOSFET half-bridges, while the EUSART receives speed commands from a host. The 14-pin PDIP form factor enables through-hole motor boards where field serviceability and hand-rework are valued. Sleep currents below 100 nA let battery-driven actuators stay in standby for years.
Recommandé
Portable Medical Accessory
Battery-powered medical accessories such as pulse-oximeter probes, pill dispensers, and handheld thermometers benefit from the PIC16LF1704-E/P's low-voltage 1.8 V operation and small 14-pin PDIP. The 10-bit ADC digitizes thermistor or photodiode signals while the on-chip op-amp amplifies low-level sensor outputs without external parts. XLP sleep below 100 nA extends battery life past warranty windows, and the 512 B RAM buffers measurement data between transmissions.
Recommandé
Automotive Interior Lighting Module
Although the PIC16LF1704-E/P is not AEC-Q100 qualified, the wide -40 °C to +125 °C extended temperature grade supports non-safety automotive interior modules such as ambient lighting, door-handle illumination, and welcome-projector controllers. The PIC core drives RGB LEDs via PWM while the LIN-compatible EUSART talks to the vehicle body controller. Designers must add an external automotive regulator and TVS protection; the MCU is not a drop-in for AEC-Q100 critical applications.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at VDD=3.3 V and 32 MHz active current ~5 mA typical, power consumption is ~16.5 mW. In sleep with WDT off, current drops below 100 nA, yielding multi-year battery life on a CR2032. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF X7R ceramic placed within 5 mm of pin 1. Add a 10 µF bulk capacitor on the VDD rail if the supply is shared with motors or RF stages.
Reserve ICSPCLK (pin 13) and ICSPDAT (pin 14) as the dedicated programming/debug interface. Do not strap these pins to high-value pull-ups that exceed 10 kΩ or add large caps that prevent the PICkit 4/5 from driving them. Pull MCLR (pin 4) high through a 10 kΩ resistor and add a 100 nF cap to ground for clean reset transitions during in-circuit programming.
Do not exceed VDD=3.6 V; the LF silicon lacks the 5 V tolerance of the non-LF F variant. Brown-out detection should be enabled and configured for the application's minimum supply voltage. When migrating from PIC16LF1704 to PIC16LF1703, recompile because Flash size differences change the IVT layout and EEPROM emulation assumptions.
