PIC16LF1787-E/MV Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1787-E/MV is a low-power 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ 16F family, integrating 14KB of Flash program memory, 1KB of ROM, 1024 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM in a 40-pin UQFN (5x5 mm) package with exposed thermal pad. It runs at up to 32 MHz, operates from 1.8V to 3.6V, and combines a 12-bit ADC, 8-bit DAC, op-amp, programmable switch-mode controller (PSMC), and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) for low-power sensor, motor-control and mixed-signal designs.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a programmable processor with an 8-bit data bus and on-chip Flash/ROM/RAM that executes embedded firmware for sensing, control, and human-interface tasks. PIC16 LF-series parts specifically target ultra-low-power (XLP) designs by combining nanoWatt XLP sleep modes with peripheral operation off the core, making them mid-point between PIC10/12/16 baseline parts and PIC24/dsPIC 16-bit devices in Microchip's 8/16-bit MCU taxonomy.

Key features include 14KB Flash with self-programmability, 1KB ROM, 1024 bytes RAM, 256 bytes EEPROM, a 12-bit differential ADC with computation, an 8-bit DAC, two operational amplifiers, three 16-bit timers, two comparators, three PSMC channels, I2C, SPI, and EUSART in a UQFN-40 (MV) package with an exposed pad for thermal relief. The E in the suffix indicates -40C to +125C extended operating temperature.

The architecture is built around the enhanced mid-range 14-bit instruction set with a hardware multiplier and a vectored interrupt controller. The 12-bit ADC with computation (ADCC) automates averaging, oversampling, and threshold comparisons without CPU intervention, which is why it is paired with PSMC blocks for digital lighting and BLDC motor control. CIPs such as CLC, NCO, and SMT continue processing while the CPU is in sleep.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, white goods and home appliances, battery chargers, LED lighting controllers, BLDC/PMSM motor commutation in small fans, and industrial control panels that benefit from the integrated op-amp and DAC for signal conditioning. The wide extended-temperature grade makes it usable in outdoor equipment, thermostats, and automotive under-hood sensor interfaces.

When designing with this device, plan the LDO and decoupling network carefully - use a 100 nF + 1 uF combination near VDD and AVSS, and place the exposed pad on a contiguous ground copper pour to keep junction temperature within limits. If you do not need the op-amp or PSMC peripherals, consider the pin-compatible PIC16LF1786-E/MV (without the Q suffix) for a lower-cost migration within the same silicon family.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing for LCSC, Mouser, DigiKey and Octopart, drop-in same-package PIC16LF178x and PIC16F178x replacements, and practical design notes not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet - giving engineers an information gain beyond the standalone Microchip DS40001773 document.

The 1.8 V-3.6 V Vdd range simplifies designs that operate from rectified mains or PoE inputs.

🏭

Industrial Control and Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC16LF1787-E/MV's on-chip dual op-amps, two comparators, and 12-bit differential ADC eliminate the need for a separate analog front-end in 4-20 mA, 0-10 V, and bridge-sensor signal chains. The 14 KB Flash stores linearization tables for thermocouples, RTDs, and load cells, while the EUSART and I2C peripherals deliver measurements to PLCs or HMI displays. The -40 C to +125 C extended temperature grade suits factory-floor panels and outdoor enclosures. CIPs run PID loops autonomously, offloading the CPU and improving control-loop determinism.

🚗

Automotive Under-Hood Sensor Interface

The PIC16LF1787-E/MV with extended -40 C to +125 C grade operates reliably in under-hood automotive environments for oil-level, MAP, and battery-current monitoring. The 12-bit ADC with computation filters noisy alternator-clipped signals, and the on-chip op-amps condition shunt-resistor drop for fuel-pump and HVAC motor feedback. CAN-capable via SPI MCP2515 or EUSART, it integrates into vehicle body networks while keeping cost far below AEC-Q100 qualified parts. Designers typically add TVS diodes and EMI filtering on Vdd for ISO 7637-2 surge protection.

⚡

Battery Charger and Fuel-Gauge Companion

The PIC16LF1787-E/MV acts as a battery-management companion controller, using its 12-bit ADC and op-amps to monitor charge/discharge current and pack voltage for Li-ion, LiFePO4, and lead-acid chemistries. The 14 KB Flash supports multi-stage CC-CV charging profiles and SMBus or I2C communication with host processors. Core Independent Peripherals provide hardware over-current and over-voltage protection independent of firmware, improving safety and regulatory compliance. The 1.8 V-3.6 V Vdd range allows direct connection to single-cell battery stacks.

In sleep with full RAM retention, nanoWatt XLP reduces this to below 50 nA typical per the datasheet. Use a low-Iq LDO such as MCP1700 (1.6 uA quiescent) to avoid wasting battery life in sleep states. Decouple Vdd/AVdd pairs with 100 nF plus 1 uF ceramic capacitors placed within 3 mm of each supply pin, and tie AVdd directly to Vdd with a ferrite bead for noise isolation.

The 40-pin UQFN (MV) package has a thermal pad (pin 41 / exposed pad) that MUST be soldered to a contiguous ground copper pour at least 25 mm^2 to maintain rated electrical performance and junction temperature. Without the EP properly soldered, the part may exceed 100 C junction temperature during sustained full-load operation. Thermal resistance theta_JA on a 4-layer JEDEC test board is approximately 30 C/W; at 100 mW dissipation the junction rises only 3 C above ambient.

Route analog inputs (AN0-AN7) away from digital switching traces; keep ground return paths short and use a single-point ground connection if the board mixes analog and high-current digital sections. For the 32 MHz HFINTOSC, place the device at least 5 mm from board edges and noisy switching traces. The exposed thermal pad should not be used as an electrical connection point other than ground - violating this can cause latch-up and undefined ADC behavior.

Do not exceed 3.6 V on Vdd - the LF device has lower absolute maximum than the F variant (5.5 V). When migrating PIC16F1787 firmware to PIC16LF1787, check BOR voltage configuration bits since the F device's default BOR is too high for 1.8 V operation. The MCLR pin (RA3) is input-only and must be pulled high through a 10 kOhm resistor for normal operation; do not leave it floating or the device may reset intermittently.

The 12-bit ADC achieves specified ENOB performance only when the source impedance is below 5 kOhm. Add an external buffer op-amp (such as MCP6001) for high-impedance sensors to avoid ADC gain errors. For PSMC PWM outputs, keep trace impedance below 50 ohms and minimize trace length below 25 mm to avoid ringing on gate-driver inputs. Use a series gate resistor (10-47 ohms) to dampen overshoot at the gate-driver IC.
