PIC16LF18424T-I/JQ Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF18424T-I/JQ is an 8-bit PIC16F microcontroller IC with 32 MHz CPU speed, 7 KB (4K x 14) of Flash program memory, and integrated Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs), housed in a 16-pin UQFN (4x4) package. It belongs to the PIC16(L)F184xx XLP (eXtreme Low-Power) family, with an industrial -40°C to +85°C operating temperature range and 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply voltage for low-power operation.

A PIC (Peripheral Interface Controller) microcontroller is a compact, low-cost, single-chip computer built around an 8-bit or 16-bit RISC architecture. PIC microcontrollers integrate CPU, Flash, RAM, EEPROM, and configurable peripherals (ADC, PWM, UART, comparators) on one die. PIC16 mid-range parts sit in a hierarchy: PIC microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> PIC16 family -> PIC16F184xx sub-family, balancing low power consumption, modest memory, and rich analog peripherals for general-purpose embedded designs.

Key features include 512 B of data RAM, 12 I/O pins, a 12-bit ADCC (Analog-to-Digital Converter with Computation), two PWM channels, comparators, a CWG (Complementary Waveform Generator), EUSART, SPI, and I²C peripherals. Internal oscillator, ICD (In-Circuit Debug) support, and Microchip's nanoWatt XLP technology enable sleep currents down to nanoampere levels for battery-powered applications.

Architecturally, the PIC16LF18424 uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with a 14-bit instruction word, hardware multiplier, and a wide peripheral set configurable through Peripheral Pin Select (PPS). Its XLP technology and CIPs (such as the 12-bit ADCC and CWG) let the device perform complex sequencing without CPU intervention, reducing active time and energy consumption in sensor and IoT nodes.

Typical applications include ultra-low-power IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered wearable devices, LED lighting controllers, consumer electronics, home automation, and industrial low-power monitoring where extended battery life, integrated analog, and small form factor are required.

When designing with this part, plan I/O assignments early because PPS allows flexible pin mapping. Use the MPLAB X IDE and MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC) for rapid peripheral setup, and refer to the datasheet for ADC2 acquisition time and CWG dead-band settings in motor or lighting control applications.

Notes de conception

Estimated: At 32 MHz active mode the PIC16LF18424T-I/JQ core draws about 4-5 mA from 3.3 V; in XLP Sleep mode the datasheet specifies roughly 50-300 nA typical with peripherals disabled. For battery-life math, treat each 1 ms active wake event costing ~5 mA × 1 ms = ~5 µAs and each Sleep second costing 0.3 µA × 1 s = 0.3 µAs — so 1 wake per second yields ~5.3 µAs per second. Use XLP Sleep with peripherals running via CIPs to drop the average current by 80-90% versus CPU-driven polling.

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of the VDD pin (pin 16) and tie the 16-UQFN exposed thermal pad to a grounded copper pour of 25 mm² or larger for thermal relief. The UQFN EP must be soldered to the PCB land pattern to meet the datasheet thermal resistance; an unsoldered EP raises junction-to-ambient thermal resistance by 30-50% and limits high-temperature operation. Use a 4-layer PCB where possible to keep VDD/VSS impedance below 50 mΩ across the 32 MHz fundamental and its harmonics.

Do not exceed 3.6 V on VDD on the PIC16LF18424 (LF) variant — this is the most common failure mode when migrating from PIC16F18424 5V designs. Confirm the MCLR pull-up is enabled in configuration words if the MCLR pin (RA3/this) is used as a reset input, or the device may not start cleanly. When using Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), always unlock IOLOCK before reconfiguration and lock it afterward to avoid accidental runtime remapping that can deadlock peripheral output pins.

Route the ICSPCLK and ICSPDAT lines (RB6/RB7) as short, parallel traces with a ground guard to preserve debug signal integrity at the 5 V pkmin ICD probe levels. Keep the 32 MHz external oscillator traces (if used) under 5 mm and surround them with a ground ring; stray capacitance above 5 pF will pull the oscillator and may violate the ±2% frequency tolerance required for EUSART baud-rate accuracy above 115.2 kbps.

When driving external FETs from the CWG output, place a 100 Ω series resistor within 5 mm of the MCU pin to dampen the LC tank formed by the gate capacitance and PCB trace inductance. Without damping, ringing at 50-150 MHz can couple into adjacent analog ADCC inputs and degrade conversion accuracy by 1-2 LSB. For I²C lines running above 400 kHz, add 4.7 kΩ pull-ups to VDD rather than 3.3 V rails, and place the pull-ups within 10 mm of the MCU pins to meet the tR (rise-time) specification in the datasheet.
