PIC18F27Q83-I/SP Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC18F27Q83-I/SP is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller running up to 64 MHz, integrating 128 KB of Flash program memory, 13 KB of SRAM, and 1 KB of data EEPROM in a 28-pin SPDIP (Skinny Plastic DIP) through-hole package. The part belongs to the PIC18-Q83 family and combines an extensive array of Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) with an integrated CAN 2.0B controller, targeting cost-optimized industrial and automotive body/comfort applications.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a microprocessor core with an 8-bit data path, on-chip program memory, RAM, and integrated peripherals optimized for embedded control. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC18 family sits above baseline PIC10/12/16 and below the PIC24/dsPIC33 16-bit cores, while still employing a 16-bit modified Harvard instruction set that delivers high code density and deterministic interrupt latency for real-time control. The PIC18-Q83 family is one of Microchip's CIP-rich platforms where many peripherals (timers, PWM, ADC, communications, custom logic) can operate without CPU intervention, freeing the core for application logic.

Key features include a 12-bit differential ADC with up to 17 channels, a 5-bit DAC, multiple Zero-Cross Detect modules, configurable logic cells, Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), three 16-bit Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) outputs, Hardware Limit Timer (HLT), Windowed Watchdog Timer (WWDT), and an internal 64 MHz high-speed oscillator. The integrated CAN module supports CAN 2.0B active at bit rates up to 1 Mbit/s, making the part a strong fit for distributed industrial nodes.

Typical applications include industrial sensor nodes, HVAC controllers, automotive body and climate modules, building automation gateways, low-cost CAN nodes, and battery-powered instrumentation where deterministic 8-bit control plus fieldbus connectivity is required.

When designing with this part, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair and keep the ICSP/PGD/PGC traces short to preserve in-circuit debug stability. For CAN bus termination, add a 120 ohm resistor at each end of the bus, never at the node itself.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in same-package alternatives from the PIC18-Q83 and PIC18-Q84 families, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone, giving you a single decision-ready reference for sourcing PIC18F27Q83-I/SP.

Applications typiques

PIC18F27Q83-I/SP convient pour 6 applications: Industrial CAN Bus Sensor Nodes, Automotive Body and Comfort Modules, Building Automation Gateways, Battery-Powered Instrumentation, HVAC Climate Control Units, Low-Cost Fieldbus Endpoint Nodes.

🏭

Industrial CAN Bus Sensor Nodes

The PIC18F27Q83-I/SP fits industrial CAN bus sensor nodes because its on-chip CAN 2.0B controller supports standard 11-bit and extended 29-bit identifiers at bit rates up to 1 Mbit/s without an external protocol IC, reducing BOM cost. With 128 KB Flash and 13 KB SRAM, the device can run CANopen or J1939-style stacks with room for application logic. Place the MCU between an external MCP2551/MCP2562 CAN transceiver and the sensor front-end, and use the integrated 12-bit differential ADC for ratiometric sensor readings directly off bridge outputs. The -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature grade suits factory-floor deployments.

🚗

Automotive Body and Comfort Modules

In automotive body and comfort modules such as HVAC door panels, mirror controllers, and seat adjusters, the PIC18F27Q83-I/SP delivers enough CPU bandwidth at 64 MHz to drive multiple LIN-style sub-buses alongside a CAN backbone. The 12-bit ADC and 5-bit DAC can read potentiometers and drive small actuator references, while the three 16-bit PWM channels run LED dimming or motor speed control. The integrated CAN module lets a single MCU talk to the body controller without an external protocol IC. Designers should pair the part with a robust TVS protection array on the bus and use the watchdog window mode for safety compliance.

🏭

Building Automation Gateways

The PIC18F27Q83-I/SP suits building automation gateways that bridge low-speed sensor networks to a CAN backbone, since the on-chip CAN module plus UART/SPI/I2C peripherals let the MCU aggregate Modbus RTU, I2C sensor, or SPI device traffic. The 128 KB Flash fits BACnet or vendor-specific gateway firmware, and the 13 KB SRAM comfortably buffers concurrent Modbus and CAN frames. Use the dedicated CAN TX/RX pins (RC6/RC7) routed straight to an isolated CAN transceiver such as the MCP2562 with a small digital isolator for 3 kV bus isolation.

⚡

Battery-Powered Instrumentation

Battery-powered instrumentation such as portable data loggers or remote telemetry units benefits from the PIC18F27Q83-I/SP because the PIC18-Q83 supports multiple low-power sleep modes down to the nanoampere range and integrates a low-power 32 kHz auxiliary oscillator for RTC duty cycling. The 128 KB Flash accommodates several days of compressed local logging, while the 1 KB EEPROM stores calibration constants without wearing the Flash. Designers can wake the device from CAN activity, perform a 12-bit ADC scan, transmit the result, and return to sleep, achieving average current budgets below 1 mA on a 3.6 V Li-SoCl2 cell.

🏭

HVAC Climate Control Units

The PIC18F27Q83-I/SP works well in HVAC climate control units because its three 16-bit PWM channels can drive triac-fired heater elements or variable-speed fans directly, while the 12-bit differential ADC reads thermistor bridges with hardware averaging. The CAN module lets the unit report status to a central building controller, and the 5-bit DAC drives analog setpoint panel indicators. Use the CWG (Complementary Waveform Generator) for dead-band control of half-bridge drivers, eliminating CPU cycle overhead. Operate at 5 V to maximize noise margin on long analog runs.

🌐

Low-Cost Fieldbus Endpoint Nodes

For low-cost CAN-based fieldbus endpoints in factory automation, the PIC18F27Q83-I/SP delivers a deterministic 8-bit core, on-chip CAN, and 25 I/O pins at a price point well below 32-bit ARM alternatives. The integrated CIPs let the part toggle outputs, scan ADCs, and reply to CAN frames without waking the main CPU, freeing cycles for application code. Stack any number of these nodes on a single CAN bus with 120 ohm termination at both ends of the trunk. The 28-SPDIP package simplifies hand-soldered prototypes and educational kits, accelerating bring-up.

Notes de conception

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair (pins 7/8 and 19/20 on the 28-SPDIP). Add a bulk 1 uF to 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the package to handle transient current spikes when the CPU wakes from sleep into full-speed ADC scanning. For battery-powered designs, use the PIC18-Q83's nanoampere sleep modes plus a 32 kHz auxiliary oscillator to keep average current below 1 mA.

Keep the ICSP traces PGD (RB7) and PGC (RB6) shorter than 50 mm total, route them away from the CAN bus traces, and place a 4.7 kohm pull-up on MCLR (pin 1). If the design must tolerate production-line programming without removing the part, dedicate the ICSP pins and do not reuse them for high-impedance analog inputs, or your debugger may false-trigger on noise.

Do not omit the 120 ohm CAN bus termination resistors at each end of the bus trunk - they are required for reliable high-speed CAN signaling. Do not connect the on-chip CAN module directly to the bus without a transceiver such as the MCP2551 or MCP2562; the on-chip module handles protocol only, never physical layer. Finally, when migrating from PIC18F27Q83 to PIC18F27Q84 in the same 28-SPDIP footprint, verify peripheral pinout changes at the schematic level because the Q84 adds CAN FD that shifts some alternate pin functions.
