PIC18F47Q84-E/PT Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC18F47Q84-E/PT is an 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller running at up to 64 MHz with 128 KB of Flash, 13 KB of RAM, 1 KB of EEPROM and integrated Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) plus a CAN FD controller, all packaged in a 44-pin TQFP (10x10 mm). It targets cost-optimised embedded designs that need automotive-grade connectivity and high analog integration in an industrial temperature grade.

An 8-bit PIC microcontroller is a Harvard-architecture MCU built around an enhanced PIC18 CPU core, combining deterministic real-time control with rich on-chip peripherals. The PIC18-Q84 family expands the 8-bit MCU portfolio by pairing CAN Flexible Data Rate (CAN FD) networking with CIPs such as 12-bit ADC, 5-bit DAC, DSM, configurable CLC, PWM, and math accelerator. Within the broader taxonomy this device sits as: PIC18F47Q84 -> PIC18F47Q84 family -> PIC18-Q84 series -> PIC18 microcontrollers -> 8-bit MCUs -> Microcontrollers (MCU) -> Integrated Circuits (ICs) -> Semiconductors.

Key features include 128 KB (64K x 16) self-programmable Flash, 13 KB SRAM, 1 KB EEPROM, a 12-bit ADC with computation, a 5-bit DAC, DSM, multiple PWM modules, configurable logic cells, I2C/SPI/UART interfaces, JTAG boundary scan, and a math accelerator. The CAN FD peripheral supports higher bandwidth than classic CAN, enabling modern automotive and industrial sensor networks while the CIPs offload tasks from the CPU.

The device operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V across the -40 C to +125 C industrial temperature range. The 64 MHz internal oscillator combined with peripheral clock scaling allows fine-grained power tuning through nanoWatt XLP technology. The 44-pin TQFP (10x10 mm) package exposes 36 I/O pins with multiple interrupt-on-change capable ports.

Typical applications include automotive body and sensor nodes, CAN FD sensor networks, industrial automation controllers, building automation, low-power IoT gateways, and consumer appliances requiring deterministic control with networking. The combination of CAN FD and CIPs reduces external component count and BOM cost.

When designing with this part, allocate adequate decoupling (100 nF + bulk) near each VDD/VSS pair, follow the oscillator layout guidance in section 4 of the datasheet (avoid noisy traces near OSCI/OSCO), and ensure CAN bus termination and shielding match ISO 11898-1 requirements for reliable operation.

This page synthesises distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, application notes and practical design guidance not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone, giving engineers a single reference for sourcing and integrating the PIC18F47Q84-E/PT.

Automotive CAN FD Body Controller

The PIC18F47Q84-E/PT is a strong fit for automotive CAN FD body and lighting nodes because of its integrated CAN FD controller (ISO 11898-1:2015 compliant), 64 MHz CPU, and industrial -40 C to +125 C temperature grade. Placed on a 5 V automotive rail with proper bus termination and shielding, it can act as a gateway between classic CAN and CAN FD segments, handling up to 1 Mbps in the data phase. The 12-bit ADC with computation and on-chip 5-bit DAC reduce the need for external signal conditioning, and the 128 KB Flash holds both CAN J1939 stacks and application firmware.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hub with CAN FD

For industrial sensor hubs aggregating analog and digital signals over CAN FD, the PIC18F47Q84-E/PT offers 36 I/O, a 12-bit ADC with computation, and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as CLC and DSM that run state machines without CPU intervention. The wide 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range simplifies integration with 3.3 V sensors and 5 V actuators on the same board. Compared with a discrete ADC plus MCU design, the integrated ADC and CIPs reduce BOM cost and free CPU cycles for CAN FD protocol handling.

🧩

Building Automation Controller

The PIC18F47Q84-E/PT suits building automation controllers because of its mix of UART, SPI and I2C peripherals for talking to sensors, plus CAN FD for HVAC backbone networking. The math accelerator and configurable logic cells handle motor control loops for dampers and valves at low CPU overhead, while nanoWatt XLP sleep modes drop quiescent current to support battery-backed thermostats. Notes de conception

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair (pins 10/9, 20/19, 32/31) to suppress high-frequency switching noise. Add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the MCU and ensure a low-impedance ground plane directly under the device. Keep oscillator traces (OSCI/OSCO) short and shield them with a ground guard ring to avoid coupling digital noise into the clock circuit.

Route the CAN FD bus with characteristic impedance of 120 ohms using a twisted-pair or differential microstrip on the PCB. Place a 120 ohm termination resistor at each end of the bus, and use a CAN FD transceiver such as MCP2557FD with split termination for better EMI. Keep CAN traces away from switching power inductors and high-dV/dt signals to maintain ISO 11898-1:2015 compliance.

When migrating firmware from the PIC18F47K42 family, note that the PIC18-Q84 has a different register map, a CAN FD peripheral not present on K42, and a revised interrupt controller. Code compiled for K42 will not run on Q84 without modification. Use the PIC18F27/47/57Q84 datasheet (DS40002213E) and the MCC code configurator to regenerate peripheral initialisation blocks.

Estimated: At 64 MHz with all peripherals enabled, VDD = 5.0 V, the core current draw is approximately 15 mA; enabling CAN FD, ADC and three PWMs can push total current to ~22 mA. Total power dissipation is therefore about 0.11 W, well within the TQFP-44 thermal envelope (theta_JA approximately 50 C/W) without a heatsink.
