PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML Présentation

The Microchip PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML is a low-power 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller from the nanoWatt XLP family, featuring 16 KB of Flash program memory, 512 bytes of SRAM and 256 bytes of EEPROM, in a 20-pin QFN (4x4 mm) package. It operates at up to 64 MHz (16 MIPS) from a 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply and integrates 12 channels of 10-bit ADC, two rail-to-rail comparators, a fixed voltage reference, and multiple serial interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C).

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory, working RAM, and peripheral interfaces into one package. Within the broader hierarchy, the PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML is an 8-bit microcontroller -> microcontroller unit (MCU) -> embedded controller -> semiconductor device. The "LF" prefix denotes the low-voltage variant (1.8-3.6 V), while the "K22" series adds nanoWatt eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology with deep-sleep currents below 50 nA, making it a member of Microchip's energy-efficient MCU family.

Key features include a 16 MHz internal oscillator with 4x PLL for 64 MHz operation, 16 KB Flash (8K x 16 words), 512 bytes RAM, 256 bytes EEPROM, a 10-bit ADC with 12 channels, two comparators with selectable on-chip voltage reference, 18 I/O pins, and the standard PIC18 peripheral set (CCP, EUSART, MSSP, CWG). The 20-QFN package (4x4 mm) offers a compact footprint suitable for space-constrained designs.

Architecturally, the device uses Microchip's enhanced PIC18 Harvard RISC core with a 16-bit instruction word and 8-bit data path, executed through a 2-stage pipeline. The XLP nanoWatt technology includes Sleep mode (down to ~20 nA typical), watchdog timer disable in Sleep, ultra-low-power watchdog (~500 nA), and a real-time clock calibration mode. The ADC uses a successive-approximation register (SAR) architecture, and the comparators can source/sink small currents for analog signal conditioning without external op-amps.

Typical applications include battery-powered IoT sensor nodes, low-power remote controls, portable medical devices, energy-harvesting systems, automotive body electronics, USB device peripherals (when paired with PIC18LF13K50), and small home appliances. The combination of high MIPS at low voltage and ultra-low Sleep current makes it suitable for products where battery life is critical.

When designing with the PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML, allocate the QFN thermal pad correctly with a 0.1 mm via array to ground for proper heat spreading, and ensure the analog supply AVSS is tied to digital ground to minimize ADC noise. Programming is supported via MPLAB X IDE, MPLAB XC8 compiler, and the PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger - all covered by Microchip's free tool chain.

Applications typiques

PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML convient pour 6 applications: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Low-Power Remote Control, Portable Medical Monitoring Device, Energy-Harvesting Wireless Switch, Small Home Appliance Control Board, Industrial Sensor Hub / Modbus Node.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML is a strong fit for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes because of its nanoWatt XLP Sleep current around 20 nA and its 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply range that maps directly onto two AA alkaline cells or a single Li-ion with regulator. With 12 channels of 10-bit ADC and an integrated selectable 1.024 V / 2.048 V / 4.096 V fixed voltage reference, the part can digitize thermistors, photodiodes and gas-sensor analog outputs without a separate analog reference IC. In a typical design, the PIC wakes on RTCC alarm, scans sensors via the ADC, transmits the packet over an attached sub-GHz radio such as the MRF89XA, then returns to Sleep with peripherals off. The 20-QFN 4x4 mm footprint keeps the overall BOM small.

📱

Low-Power Remote Control

The PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML fits hand-held remote controls where coin-cell battery life is the primary constraint. Its nanoWatt XLP Sleep current under 20 nA, combined with the PIC18's ability to wake on external interrupt on RB0/INT or any PORTB I/O change, allows the MCU to idle in microamp-range Sleep and only spin the 64 MHz PLL when a button is pressed. The internal 16 MHz oscillator with 4x PLL provides enough MIPS to drive IR protocols or RF encoders without an external crystal. The 20-QFN package keeps the PCB small enough to fit behind a key-fob shell.

💊

Portable Medical Monitoring Device

The PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML is suitable for portable medical monitoring peripherals such as pulse oximetry front-ends, handheld thermometers and digital stethoscope interfaces. Its low-voltage 1.8-3.6 V operation allows direct Li-ion battery connection, while the 10-bit ADC and rail-to-rail comparators can read sensor bridges or photodiode amplifiers without external op-amps. The XLP Sleep current is critical because medical wearables spend >99% of their time idle waiting for a measurement trigger. The compact 20-QFN package supports miniaturized form factors and the industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature range covers body-worn operating conditions.

⚡

Energy-Harvesting Wireless Switch

The PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML is a strong match for energy-harvesting wireless switches, such as EnOcean-compatible self-powered light switches or BLE beacons powered by indoor photovoltaic cells. The part wakes from Sleep in microseconds and can complete a transmit cycle within a few hundred microseconds, well within the energy budget of a typical 100 uF storage cap charged from a kinetic or solar transducer. The internal comparator can monitor the storage cap voltage to gate transmission, while the EUSART or MSSP links to a companion radio such as the RN4870 BLE module.

🏭

Small Home Appliance Control Board

The PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML is well-suited as the main controller in small home appliances such as coffee machines, induction cooktops, humidifiers and air-quality monitors. Its 16 MIPS performance handles PWM-controlled heaters, fans and pumps using the ECCP module, while the integrated rail-to-rail comparators can monitor zero-cross detection or over-current signals directly from the AC mains bridge. The 12-channel 10-bit ADC is enough to read multiple temperature sensors, water levels, and user-interface potentiometers. The QFN-20 footprint is small enough to fit a compact control PCB alongside an AC/DC module.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hub / Modbus Node

The PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML is appropriate for industrial sensor hubs and Modbus RTU slave nodes where low power, small footprint and robust peripherals matter. The EUSART supports RS-485 half-duplex communication at up to 1 Mbps using an external transceiver such as the MAX485, while the 10-bit ADC with 12 channels covers multiple analog process inputs. The 16 MIPS performance comfortably runs Modbus RTU or simple CAN-like protocols. The -I industrial temperature grade covers factory-floor environments from -40 C to +85 C.

Notes de conception

The 20-pin QFN package has an exposed thermal pad (EP) on the underside that MUST be soldered to a PCB pad for both thermal dissipation and mechanical reliability. Drill an array of 0.3 mm thermal vias (typically 9-12 vias on a 1.0 mm pitch) under the EP and tie them to the VSS plane. Without proper EP soldering, the device's thermal resistance rises sharply and reflow reliability drops, especially under thermal-cycling stress.

Estimated: at 64 MHz active and 3.3 V VDD, the PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML typically draws ~5-8 mA active, but in Sleep with peripherals off it falls to ~20 nA. For coin-cell designs, ensure the average current budget accounts for <1% active duty cycle - the nanoWatt XLP modes (Sleep, Deep Sleep, and RTCC with external 32.768 kHz crystal) are essential to hit multi-year battery life. Decouple VDD with 100 nF ceramic close to the pin and a bulk 1-10 uF cap on the supply rail.

When migrating from the PIC18F14K22 (F variant, 1.8-5.5 V) to the PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML (LF variant, 1.8-3.6 V), do NOT apply 5 V to VDD - this will damage it. Also, the PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML ADC is optimized for 3.3 V operation; for 5 V analog signals, use the F variant or add an external resistor divider. The PLL has minimum VDD requirements and may not lock reliably below 2.0 V - check datasheet parameter D016 (PLL lock threshold) before relying on 64 MHz operation at low voltages.

The PIC18LF14K22T-I/ML ADC accuracy depends heavily on clean analog and digital supplies. Place a ferrite bead or small RC filter between VDD and AVSS-equivalent routing (VSS pin 9) to prevent digital switching noise from coupling into the ADC reference. For high-impedance analog sources, add an op-amp buffer or sample-and-hold capacitor; the 10-bit ADC with 4.096 V FVR has an LSB of 4 mV and source impedance above 10 kohm will degrade conversion accuracy.
