PIC24FV16KM104-E/PT Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC24FV16KM104-E/PT is a 16-bit microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ 24F family, delivering 32 MIPS performance from a 32 MHz core and 16 KB of self-programmable Flash program memory (5.5K x 24 words) in a 44-pin TQFP (10x10 mm) package. It is qualified to the automotive -E temperature grade (-40°C to +125°C) and supports the wide 2.0V to 5.5V VDD range that defines the PIC24FV product line, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V system rails without external level shifters.

What is a PIC24F microcontroller? A PIC24F is a 16-bit modified-Harvard RISC microcontroller from Microchip Technology that occupies the middle ground between the 8-bit PIC16/PIC18 families and the 32-bit PIC32MX/dsPIC families. It uses a 16-bit data path, 24-bit instruction word, hardware multiply/divide, and a tightly-coupled peripheral set. Within the PIC24F family hierarchy (PIC24F → PIC24FJ → PIC24FV), the "FV" suffix indicates the wide-voltage 2.0V-5.5V variant optimized for battery and mixed-rail designs, while the "KM" series is the nanoWatt XLP extreme-low-power sub-line.

Key features of the PIC24FV16KM104 include 1 KB of SRAM, 512 bytes of EEPROM, a 12-bit ADC with up to 22 input channels, multiple Capture/Compare/PWM (MCCP/SCCP) modules for motor and power control, and serial interfaces including I²C, SPI, UART/USART, IrDA, and LIN. The device also integrates configurable logic cells, comparators, brown-out reset, low-voltage detect, power-on reset, and a watchdog timer.

Architecturally, the PIC24FV16KM104 leverages the same 16-bit modified-Harvard core used across the PIC24F family, with single-cycle 16×16-bit MAC hardware for DSP-class signal processing at microamp power budgets. The XLP nanoWatt technology enables sleep currents in the microamp range while retaining RAM, allowing battery-powered sensors to wake on interrupt without external RTC chips.

Typical applications include automotive body and interior modules (LIN nodes, sensor conditioning), low-power IoT edge nodes, portable medical devices, human-interface products with mTouch capacitive sensing, and battery-powered industrial telemetry. The 44-TQFP footprint also supports hand-soldered prototypes and low-volume production.

When designing with this device, allocate pin functions carefully because the 44-pin package limits GPIO to 37 I/Os. Use MPLAB X IDE plus MCCB code generator for peripheral setup, and verify the wide-voltage 2.0V-5.5V analog and timing parameters if migrating from a 3.3V-only PIC24FJ variant.

Notes de conception

The PIC24FV16KM104-E/PT supports 2.0V-5.5V VDD but draws significantly more current at higher voltages due to PIC core bias scaling. Estimated: at 32 MHz and 5.0V VDD, active current is approximately 8 mA; at 3.3V the same workload drops to roughly 5 mA. Place a 1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor close to each VDD/VSS pin pair, and a bulk 10 µF tantalum or ceramic on the main rail. Use the XLP sleep mode with the on-chip Low-Power RTCC for product ID, keep the core in Sleep and wake on CLC threshold crossing to extend battery life.

Route the ICSP programming pins (RB6/ICSPCLK, RB7/ICSPDAT) to a header or test pad for in-circuit firmware upgrades - do not gate them behind a buffer. The VDDCORE pin (pin 41 on the 44-TQFP) requires a 470 nF ceramic capacitor to VSS, placed within 5 mm of the pin. Keep the 32 kHz secondary oscillator traces short and guarded to avoid coupling digital switching noise into the low-power wake-up path.

Estimated: at 32 MHz the PIC24F core harmonics fall in the 96-128 MHz range, so the OSC1/OSC2 traces should be no longer than 5 mm and surrounded by a ground pour to limit EMI. Place analog input traces (ANx on pins 1-8 of the 44-TQFP) away from PWM outputs to minimize ADC switching noise coupling. Use a star-ground topology at the VSS pin nearest the MCU to separate analog and digital returns.

Do not exceed 5.5V on any pin, including the MCLR reset pin. The MCLR pin requires a 10 kΩ pull-up to VDD and a 100 nF capacitor to VSS for reliable reset; omitting the capacitor can cause spurious resets during inrush. When migrating code from a PIC24FJ variant, verify the wide-voltage analog parameters because the PIC24FV-spec variants have different ADC gain error vs. 5V. Use the MCCB code generator inside MPLAB X to avoid manual register errors.

For LIN bus implementations, the LIN spec requires a slew-rate-controlled transceiver; the on-chip UART is not LIN-compliant by itself, so use an external MCP2021A or TJA1027 transceiver. The CCP/PWM outputs can drive small MOSFET gates directly but require gate-resistance series oxide of ~5-100 Ω to dampen ringing when driving cables longer than 50 mm. Keep PWM traces matched-length within 2 mm if used in complementary pairs.
