PIC32MM0256GPM064-I/MR Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and peripherals on one die, providing embedded control for everything from sensor nodes to motor drives. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC32MM family sits under 32-bit microcontrollers, which sit under microcontrollers, which sit under microprocessors and finally under semiconductors. The microAptiv UC core used here implements the MIPS32 instruction set with low-power modes that suspend execution while leaving wake sources active, allowing deep-sleep current well below typical Cortex-M0+ designs.
Key differentiating features of this part include the 256 KB flash with ECC, USB 2.0 full-speed OTG on-chip PHY, eXtreme Low Power (XLP) Run, Doze and Sleep modes drawing microamp-level standby, Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as Configurable Logic Cells and 16-bit PWM, and a 12-bit 1.1 Msps ADC with up to 19 analog channels. The 64-pin QFN package exposes up to 53 general-purpose I/O pins, three I2C/SPI/UART peripherals, and four 16-bit timers/counters, providing a balanced peripheral mix for sensor aggregation, motor control and human-interface designs.
The architecture combines a deterministic 25 MHz / 25 DMIPS MIPS32 core, a multi-vector interrupt controller with 5-cycle latency, and a Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) remapping fabric that lets users reassign digital peripherals to almost any I/O pin, simplifying PCB routing. Memory protection includes hardware flash ECC, a separate boot flash region, and a configuration-word block that enforces fail-safe clock and watchdog defaults at reset. The integrated USB PHY supports device, host and OTG modes and enumerates as CDC, HID, MSD or vendor classes without an external transceiver.
Typical applications include USB-connected sensor hubs, IoT edge nodes, low-power motor drives, e-metering peripherals, consumer human-interface devices, and battery-powered medical accessories. The wide operating voltage (2.0 V to 3.6 V) and four flexible PWM channels make the part especially well suited to brushed DC and stepper control loops where deterministic interrupt latency and small standby current both matter.
When designing with this part, enable the watchdog and code-protect configuration words during production programming, use the PPS registers to map peripherals away from default pins when the PCB layout demands it, and place the 32.768 kHz secondary crystal on the SOSC pins with proper load capacitance to achieve the deep-sleep current budget.

Placed behind a USB-C connector with a 4.7 uF VBUS bulk cap and a 10 k pull-up on D+, the part powers up, runs the stack from internal flash, and returns to deep sleep. The 256 KB ECC flash protects against bit-flips in unattended outdoor enclosures.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Wearable / Portable Device
The PIC32MM0256GPM064-I/MR suits battery-powered designs because its eXtreme Low Power Sleep, Doze and Idle modes drop core current to microamp levels while leaving wake sources active. The 2.0 V to 3.6 V operating range supports direct Li-ion or coin-cell connection, and the 12-bit 1.1 Msps ADC supports accurate battery voltage and skin-temperature measurement. Designed with a 32.768 kHz crystal on the SOSC pins and the on-chip LPRC for short housekeeping cycles, the part achieves multi-month standby on a CR2032. The 256 KB flash also stores BLE stack overlays or display drivers without external memory.
Recommandé
Industrial Motor Control / PWM Drive
The PIC32MM0256GPM064-I/MR drives small brushed DC, stepper or BLDC motors through its four 16-bit PWM channels with configurable dead-time and fault inputs. The 25 MIPS microAptiv core delivers deterministic loop times for FOC algorithms, while the 12-bit ADC with 1.1 Msps sample rate provides low-latency current feedback. Industrial -40C to +85C operation plus ECC flash protect against bit-flips near motor-driver switching noise. With the Peripheral Pin Select fabric routing PWM outputs away from analog inputs, PCB routing flexibility is excellent for compact driver boards.
Recommandé
Smart Meter / e-Metering Peripheral
The PIC32MM0256GPM064-I/MR fits electronic metering peripherals because the hardware flash ECC and 32 KB SRAM support signed firmware and tamper detection, while the USB port enables field-upgradable diagnostic dumps to a service laptop. The 12-bit ADC with up to 1.1 Msps is accurate enough for voltage and current sensing in single-phase energy meters, and the XLP modes reduce idle draw between measurement windows. The 64-pin QFN with exposed pad provides good thermal dissipation in sealed meter enclosures, and the industrial temperature range covers outdoor cabinet operation.
Recommandé
Consumer Human-Interface Device (HID)
The PIC32MM0256GPM064-I/MR is ideal for USB HID peripherals such as keyboards, mice, touch pads, and control surfaces because the integrated USB OTG enumerates as HID without external transceivers. The 256 KB flash holds HID report descriptors, macro layers and capacitive-touch firmware from the Core Independent Peripherals (CIP) library. With the Peripheral Pin Select routing I2C/SPI to any GPIO, designers can place the MCU on the opposite side of the PCB from capacitive-touch electrodes. Low standby current extends battery life in wireless HID dongles.
Recommandé
Medical Accessory / Connected Health
The PIC32MM0256GPM064-I/MR supports connected health accessories because the 256 KB ECC flash protects against bit-flips that could corrupt patient-data logging firmware, and the industrial temperature range handles sterilizer or skin-temperature excursions. The 12-bit ADC with up to 19 analog channels digitizes signals from pulse-oximetry, temperature and bio-impedance sensors. The integrated USB port simplifies tethered charging and data offload to a clinician laptop. With its XLP modes the MCU achieves the multi-month standby required for wearable health patches.

Notes de conception
Estimated: With a 3.3 V supply and the MCU running peripherals at full rate, core current is around 10 mA active and below 50 uA in XLP Sleep. Place a 1 uF X7R ceramic bulk capacitor adjacent to every VDD pin pair and a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of each VDD lead. Tie all four VSS pins together with a low-impedance ground pour and stitch the exposed pad to the same ground pour with at least nine thermal vias to sink self-heated current.
The 64-pin QFN (MR) package exposes a large central thermal pad that must be soldered to a 9x9 mm copper pour with a via array of 5x5 (25 vias, 0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch). Without the exposed-pad connection the die junction temperature rises rapidly during sustained active operation, potentially tripping the thermal shutdown at 150 C. Keep analog traces short and away from the USB D+/D- differential pair, which should be 90 ohm differential and length-matched within 150 mil.
Use the Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) registers to remap digital peripherals away from default pins so that the PCB can route analog inputs on adjacent package pins. Estimate: routing the ADC inputs to a contiguous edge of the QFN allows a tight analog ground split, improving ADC SNR by 2-4 dB. Place the 32.768 kHz SOSC crystal within 5 mm of the SOSCO/SOSCI pins with a guard ring to ground to minimize pickup of switching noise.
Do not leave configuration words at default in production firmware - explicitly set the watchdog timer enable, the code-protect bits and the fail-safe clock monitor so that a mis-programmed device still resets cleanly. Verify that the USB D+ pull-up is enabled only after VBUS is sensed, and that the internal voltage regulator for the USB transceiver has 1 uF of bulk capacitance on its output. Finally, ensure that JTAG/ICSP pins RB6/RB7 are not remapped to conflicting peripheral functions without releasing programming access.
