PIC32MX250F128DT-50I/TL Présentation

The Microchip Technology PIC32MX250F128DT-50I/TL is a 32-bit MIPS M4K RISC microcontroller running at 50 MHz delivering 83 DMIPS, integrating 128 KB of Flash and 32 KB of SRAM in a 44-pin VTLA (6x6 mm) surface-mount package. The part features USB 2.0 full-speed device/host/OTG, two I2S/SPI modules, a Parallel Master Port (PMP) for graphics, Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), and a 10-bit 1 Msps ADC with up to 28 channels. Core peripherals include 5 timers, two I2C, two UART, and an RTCC; mTouch capacitive touch and 1 ns resolution timer support are also integrated.

A 32-bit microcontroller is a single-chip processor with a 32-bit data path, on-chip Flash program memory, SRAM, and a rich peripheral set. PIC32MX parts sit in the broader taxonomy of 32-bit MCU -> embedded processor -> microcontroller -> semiconductor IC. Unlike 8-bit/16-bit MCUs, the PIC32MX M4K core supports single-cycle multiplication and Harvard architecture, enabling deterministic interrupt latency for real-time control.

Key features include five 16-bit timers/counters, a 16-channel 10-bit ADC capable of 1 Msps conversion, CTMU for capacitance measurement, an analog comparator, and a charge-time measurement unit for mTouch. The USB 2.0 full-speed On-The-Go controller adds tethered/hostless connectivity, while two I2S/SSI peripherals support audio CODECs and serial DACs. PMA graphics interfacing through PMP enables direct connection to QVGA displays without external RAMDACs.

The PIC32MX250F128D is built on a 0.18 µm flash process with the MIPS32 M4K core delivering 1.56 DMIPS/MHz at 50 MHz. Hardware-level PPS remapping of digital peripherals to nearly any I/O pin simplifies PCB routing. Five 16-bit timers support input capture, output compare, and quadrature encoding. The integrated 10-bit ADC supports up to 28 analog inputs and 1 Msps sampling. USB OTG, two I2S, two I2C, two UART/USART peripherals, and an SPI interface provide flexible connectivity.

Typical applications include USB peripherals, audio interfaces, low-cost graphics HMI, mTouch capacitive touch sensing, and industrial control. The USB OTG and PMP graphics interface make it well-suited for embedded hosts, while the CTMU supports capacitive buttons and sliders in human-machine interfaces.

When designing with this part, note that the 44-pin VTLA package shares its pinout with the PIC32MX250F128D-50I/TL non-T variant. Operating voltage is 2.3V-3.6V; a 3.3V LDO with adequate decoupling is required for noise-sensitive applications.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Integrated PMP graphics interface (vs PIC32MX230F128DT-50I/TL)
  • 50 MHz CPU speed in industrial grade (vs PIC32MX250F128D-I/PT (40 MHz))
  • Compact 6x6 mm VTLA package (vs PIC32MX250F128D-I/PT (TQFP-44 10x10 mm))

Notes de conception

The PIC32MX250F128DT-50I/TL operates from 2.3V to 3.6V and requires multiple bulk capacitors for stable operation. Place a 10uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor on each VDD pin pair plus a 0.1uF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of every VDD pin. A 10uF bulk capacitor on the VBUS rail with a ferrite bead is recommended when powering from USB. For noise-sensitive analog circuits, use a separate LDO to feed AVdd.

Estimated: with the 44-pin VTLA (6x6 mm) package, allocate at least 4 layer PCB with continuous ground plane beneath the MCU. Keep USB D+/D- traces matched to 90 ohms differential, less than 50 mm long, and isolated from switching signals. Place the 12 MHz crystal or external oscillator within 5 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins with short traces and a guard ring. The exposed thermal pad must be soldered to a 5x5 mm copper pour connected to VSS for heat dissipation.

Avoid configuring I/O pins as analog inputs without disabling the digital input buffer - this adds parasitic current. When using USB, ensure the VBUS sense pin is monitored before driving D+/D- to avoid back-powering. The Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) registers must be unlocked before configuration; lock them after to prevent accidental changes. Never exceed the 3.6V absolute maximum on any I/O pin or permanent damage will occur.
