SMBJ15CA Présentation
A TVS diode is a clamping semiconductor device that protects sensitive downstream electronics by absorbing high-energy voltage transients (such as those induced by lightning, ESD, inductive load switching, or relay kickback) and shunting the surge current to ground. Within the broader component taxonomy, a TVS diode is a sub-category of surge protection devices, which fall under the discrete semiconductor family. TVS diodes complement, but do not replace, over-current protection: they react in nanoseconds and are the fastest solid-state surge clamp available, far faster than MOVs or GDTs.
Key features include 600W peak pulse power (10/1000 µs), 24.6A peak pulse current, a tight ±5% breakdown tolerance, low incremental surge resistance, and a robust glass-passivated die construction. The DO-214AA package offers an industry-standard SMB footprint compatible with all major second-source suppliers, including Vishay, STMicroelectronics, Diodes Incorporated, Micro Commercial Components (MCC), Microchip, and Bourns.
Technically, the SMBJ15CA is built on a junction-passivated PN structure optimized for fast avalanche breakdown. Its response time is sub-nanosecond, and its clamping ratio (Vc/Vbr) of approximately 1.46 reflects the device's low dynamic impedance during a surge event. The bidirectional design eliminates the need for orientation on the PCB, simplifying assembly.
Typical applications include 12V/15V rail protection in industrial control systems, DC power supply outputs exposed to load dump transients, telecom line protection, USB and CAN bus protection, sensor input clamping, and secondary protection downstream of GDTs or PTCs.
When designing with this device, ensure the trace width to the SMB pads can carry the rated peak pulse current (24.6A) and that the PCB thermal mass keeps the junction temperature within rated limits during repeated surge events. Pair with an upstream fuse or PTC for over-current coordination.

Applications typiques
SMBJ15CA convient pour 6 applications: 12V/15V Industrial DC Rail Surge Protection, Telecom and Datacenter -48V Supply Protection, Automotive 12V CAN/LIN Bus Protection, Sensor Input Protection on Industrial PLCs, USB and CAN Peripheral Interface Protection, Secondary Protection Downstream of GDTs and MOVs.
12V/15V Industrial DC Rail Surge Protection
The SMBJ15CA is the standard second-source TVS clamp for protecting 12V and 15V DC power rails inside industrial controllers, PLCs, and factory automation modules. Its 15.0V working standoff voltage sits above the nominal 12V supply while leaving enough headroom for inductive switching transients, and the 24.4V maximum clamping voltage keeps downstream 24V-tolerant DC-DC converters and logic devices within rated stress. The 600W peak pulse power and 24.6A peak pulse current (10/1000 µs) absorb the energy of inductive kickback from relays, solenoids, and motor windings that share the same chassis wiring. Placed across the rail at the PCB input, the bidirectional construction allows orientation-free assembly. Unlike an MOV, the TVS reacts in picoseconds and does not wear from repeated operation, making it ideal for continuous-transient industrial environments where the surge rate is high.
Recommandé
Telecom and Datacenter -48V Supply Protection
Inside telecom base-station power supplies, the SMBJ15CA is used to clamp ringing transients and lightning-induced surges on the -48V backplane before they reach sensitive DC-DC converter input pins. Although the -48V bus normally requires a higher-standoff TVS (such as the SMBJ58CA), the SMBJ15CA serves as a downstream secondary clamp or as primary protection on auxiliary 15V rails that derive from the -48V bus through isolated converters. Its 600W rating is sufficient for the indirect-lightning surge levels specified in GR-1089-CORE when paired with a GDT or PTC upstream, and its bidirectional construction eliminates polarity errors during high-volume assembly. The DO-214AA package provides the mechanical robustness required by telecom card-cage vibration and thermal-cycling profiles.
Recommandé
Automotive 12V CAN/LIN Bus Protection
On automotive 12V CAN and LIN bus lines, the SMBJ15CA serves as a fine secondary clamp downstream of a primary higher-voltage TVS such as the SMBJ24CA or SMBJ33CA, both of which are sized to survive the +35V to +87V load-dump transient per ISO 7637-2. The SMBJ15CA's 15V standoff keeps leakage current low on the quiescent 12V bus while its 24.4V clamping voltage protects the CAN transceiver supply pin from transient over-voltage events that escape the primary stage. Placed in parallel with the bus termination, the bidirectional construction ensures both dominant and recessive-line transients are clamped. Automotive designs typically select the AEC-Q101-qualified SMBJ15CA variant where available, while the standard SMBJ15CA remains the workhorse for industrial and commercial vehicle subsystems.
Recommandé
Sensor Input Protection on Industrial PLCs
Analog and digital sensor inputs on industrial PLCs and data-acquisition modules are exposed to field-wiring transients that originate from relay coils, solenoids, motor brushes, and electrostatic discharge on cabling. The SMBJ15CA, placed directly at the input connector and in parallel with the sensor line, clamps common-mode and differential-mode surges before they reach the front-end protection diode or op-amp of the analog front-end. Its bidirectional operation is critical because differential sensor inputs swing both above and below ground depending on excitation polarity. The 24.4V clamping voltage, combined with the 600W peak pulse rating, easily absorbs the 8/20 µs surge levels specified by IEC 61000-4-5 Level 2 (1 kV / 500 A) when paired with a series PTC or resistor to limit current.
Recommandé
USB and CAN Peripheral Interface Protection
On USB, CAN, RS-485, and other fieldbus peripherals, the SMBJ15CA is used to clamp bus-side surges that propagate back into the connector and on-board transceiver. While the data-line capacitance of a TVS is generally too high for high-speed USB 2.0 differential pairs, the SMBJ15CA is well suited to the VBUS rail of USB peripherals and to the 12V auxiliary power pin found on some industrial USB variants. The 15V working standoff prevents false triggering on the 5V USB VBUS, and the 24.4V clamping voltage protects downstream LDO regulators and PMICs from transient over-voltage. Across two SMBJ15CA devices placed between VBUS and GND, plus a low-capacitance ESD array on the data lines, designers achieve a robust IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 (8 kV contact, 15 kV air) ESD-rated interface.
Recommandé
Secondary Protection Downstream of GDTs and MOVs
In two-stage surge-protection topologies, the SMBJ15CA serves as the fast secondary clamp immediately upstream of the protected device, while a gas discharge tube (GDT) or metal-oxide varistor (MOV) acts as the slower but higher-energy primary stage. The GDT handles the bulk of the lightning surge energy but fires in microseconds, leaving a residual let-through voltage on the line for tens of microseconds. The SMBJ15CA reacts in picoseconds to that residual voltage, clamping it to 24.4V until the GDT extinguishes. This combination is the standard architecture for telecom and outdoor-LED surge-protection modules per IEC 61643-11 and is also common in PoE and Ethernet surge-protection designs.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at the rated 24.6A peak pulse current on a 10/1000 µs waveform, the SMBJ15CA dissipates approximately 600W of instantaneous power but only for ~1 ms per pulse. Thermal mass of the SMB die is small, so sustained surge trains (>10 pulses per second) can cause junction temperature to climb. In high-repetition applications, derate to <=200W per pulse or use a larger SMC package. Confirm with the manufacturer's pulse-rated derating curve.
Use wide, short traces to both SMB pads to carry the 24.6A peak pulse current. Minimum 2 oz copper and trace width >= 3 mm on each terminal are recommended. The exposed pad of the SMB package is the cathode/anode terminal - do not use thermal-via-only connections under the part because the SMBJ package does not have a thermal pad. Keep the TVS within 5 mm of the protected connector or rail input to minimize parasitic inductance, which adds overshoot on nanosecond-scale transients.
Do not use the SMBJ15CA on a 5V rail - its 15V working standoff is too high to clamp common-mode transients. Choose SMBJ5.0CA or SMBJ12CA instead. For automotive load-dump protection, the SMBJ15CA alone is insufficient: pair with a higher-standoff primary (SMBJ24CA or SMBJ33CA) that survives the +35V to +87V load-dump transient before clamping. Finally, do not assume bidirectional parts are interchangeable with unidirectional parts - the absence of a polarity band on 'CA' variants can cause confusion with 'A' variants in inventory.
Place the SMBJ15CA in parallel with the protected line, with minimal loop inductance to ground. For differential pairs (CAN, RS-485), place one SMBJ15CA from each line to ground plus one between the lines for differential-mode protection. Keep the TVS upstream of any series PTC or fuse so that surge energy is clamped before reaching the overcurrent device. Avoid running protected traces under the TVS or parallel to unfiltered transient sources.
