TLF80511TCATMA2 Présentation
An LDO (Low-Dropout) linear regulator is a type of linear voltage regulator that maintains a stable output voltage even when the input-to-output voltage differential approaches the regulator's dropout limit. In the power-management hierarchy, the LDO sits below switching converters (DC-DC) and is used as a post-filter to clean up switching-ripple noise on sensitive analog and digital rails. Because it operates in the linear region, an LDO introduces no switching noise but dissipates power proportional to (VIN - VOUT) x IOUT, so thermal design matters at high VIN-VOUT deltas.
Key features include a fixed 5V ±2% output accuracy, very low quiescent current in normal operation, wide input voltage range up to 45V load-dump survivability, integrated current limit and thermal shutdown, reverse-battery protection on the input, and ESD protection on all pins. The PG-TO263-3-1 (D2PAK) package exposes the die-tab as a thermal pad with very low thermal resistance, enabling 400 mA continuous output at elevated ambient temperatures without external heatsinking in typical automotive conditions.
The TLF80511TCATMA2 uses a PNP pass-element architecture with on-chip bandgap reference and trimmed feedback network to achieve tight output tolerance. The reverse-polarity block tolerates accidental battery reversal, while the integrated current limit fold-back protects the IC and downstream load during short-circuit events. The part is qualified to AEC-Q100 Grade 1, supporting operation across -40C to +125C junction temperatures.
Typical applications include automotive body and chassis ECUs, sensor and actuator supplies, dashboard instrumentation, and 12V/24V battery-powered industrial nodes. The wide input margin and reverse-battery protection make the part particularly well suited to harsh-environment 12V automotive power nets, where load-dump transients and jump-start events are routine.
When designing with this part, derate output current at high VIN - VOUT to stay within the package's thermal envelope. Place input/output ceramic capacitors close to the IC pins and follow Infineon's recommended capacitor types and ESR ranges to guarantee regulator stability across the full temperature range.

Applications typiques
TLF80511TCATMA2 convient pour 6 applications: Automotive Body & Chassis ECU Power Supply, Sensor and Actuator Bias Supply, Dashboard and Instrument Cluster Power, 12V/24V Industrial Battery-Powered Nodes, Replacement of Discrete Zener + Pass Transistor Rails, Infotainment and ADAS Peripheral Power.
Automotive Body & Chassis ECU Power Supply
The TLF80511TCATMA2 is purpose-built for 12V automotive body and chassis ECUs that require a clean 5V rail from a noisy battery bus. Its 40-45V load-dump survivability covers ISO 7637-2 transient profiles without an external TVS, while the integrated reverse-polarity block tolerates accidental battery reversal during service. The ±2% output accuracy and 400 mA continuous load comfortably supply small MCUs, CAN transceivers, and sensor bias networks. AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification supports -40C to +150C junction operation across cabin and under-hood environments.
Recommandé
Sensor and Actuator Bias Supply
The 5V fixed LDO output of the TLF80511TCATMA2 is well matched to bias automotive sensors such as Hall-effect position sensors, throttle-position sensors, and pressure transducers. The very low output noise and tight line/load regulation prevent sensor drift, while the 400 mA current capability supports several sensors plus their signal-conditioning op-amps on a single rail. Reverse-polarity and ESD protection at the IC pins reduce external protection parts around the sensor connector, simplifying the BOM and improving long-term field reliability.
Recommandé
Dashboard and Instrument Cluster Power
Instrument clusters and dashboard modules need a stable, low-noise 5V supply for display drivers, microcontrollers, and backlight controllers. The TLF80511TCATMA2 provides exactly that with its fixed 5V ±2% output, and the D2PAK tab efficiently conducts heat away to a small copper pour so the LDO stays cool even at sustained 400 mA loads. Integrated thermal shutdown protects the cluster electronics during fault conditions, while AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification supports the wide temperature swings seen in cabin-mounted electronics over a vehicle lifetime.
Recommandé
12V/24V Industrial Battery-Powered Nodes
Industrial battery-powered field nodes, building automation, and remote telemetry units often run from 12V or 24V lead-acid or lithium battery stacks. The TLF80511TCATMA2 handles the wide input range, surges from alternator charging, and reverse-battery hookup during installation, while its fixed 5V output feeds microcontrollers and sub-GHz transceivers directly. The integrated protections eliminate several discrete TVS and ideal-diode parts that an LDO normally requires at the input, reducing BOM count and board area for compact remote units.
Recommandé
Replacement of Discrete Zener + Pass Transistor Rails
Legacy 12V automotive subsystems often derive 5V using a Zener diode plus pass transistor, which is unregulated and dissipates significant heat. The TLF80511TCATMA2 replaces this two-component solution with a single D2PAK IC, providing ±2% regulation, current limit, thermal shutdown, and reverse-polarity protection in one footprint. Designers gain PCB area, fewer parts to qualify, and improved output accuracy across the full automotive temperature range without changing the upstream 12V architecture.
Recommandé
Infotainment and ADAS Peripheral Power
Infotainment head units and ADAS sensor peripherals (camera, radar, lidar pre-processors) require low-noise, well-protected 5V rails for housekeeping, monitoring, and housekeeping-MCU operation. The TLF80511TCATMA2 supplies that housekeeping 5V with AEC-Q100 Grade 1 reliability, while dedicated switching converters handle the higher-current core rails. Reverse-polarity and ESD at the IC level shrink the protection BOM around each peripheral, which is critical in space-constrained camera and radar PCB layouts.

- Wide input voltage tolerance covers load-dump events without external TVS (vs TLF80511TC)

Notes de conception
Estimated: at VIN = 12V, VOUT = 5V, IOUT = 400 mA, the LDO dissipates (12 - 5) x 0.4 = 2.8 W in the D2PAK tab. The PG-TO263-3-1 package has very low junction-to-case thermal resistance via the tab, but junction-to-ambient depends entirely on the PCB copper area. For continuous 400 mA at VIN up to 18V (typical automotive load-dump), mount the tab on at least 1 square inch of 2-oz copper to keep Tj below +150C - this is a critical requirement at high VIN-VOUT deltas.
Place the input and output ceramic capacitors as close as possible to the IN, GND, and OUT pins. Use a low-ESR ceramic input cap (>= 100 nF) directly at the IN pin to suppress high-frequency noise and improve line-transient response. The output cap value and ESR range must follow the Infineon datasheet stability section - using ESR outside the recommended range can cause oscillation. Solder the exposed tab to a continuous copper pour to maximize thermal dissipation.
Do not exceed the maximum input voltage or the load-dump transient rating. Even though the part has integrated reverse-polarity protection, do not apply reverse voltage for extended periods or in combination with high ambient temperature. Avoid routing high-current switching nodes near the LDO output to minimize output noise coupling - if unavoidable, add a small LC filter at the OUT pin. Verify the AEC-Q100 Grade 1 derating curves against your worst-case VIN-VOUT and ambient combination.
