ZOE-M8B Présentation
What is a GNSS SiP? A GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) System-in-Package (SiP) integrates the entire satellite positioning receiver chain — RF front end, baseband processor, memory, and crystal — into a single surface-mount module. GNSS SiPs occupy the same system hierarchy as GNSS receiver ICs and modules, both subclasses of RF & Wireless > GNSS Modules, providing complete positioning solutions without the design effort of discrete RF layout.
Key features include concurrent multi-GNSS reception across GPS L1, Galileo E1, GLONASS L1, and BeiDou B1 bands; integrated SAW filter and low-noise amplifier for passive-antenna operation; 25 mW average power over a typical 30-minute track; anti-jamming and anti-spoofing message integrity protection; and pin-to-pin compatibility with the predecessor ZOE-M8G. The Super-E mode delivers approximately 2.5x lower power than full-power operation while maintaining good positioning and speed accuracy.
Technically, the ZOE-M8B is built on u-blox's M8 positioning engine with 72-channel architecture, ROM firmware, and a built-in TCXO for fast satellite acquisition. Communication is via UART, I2C, or SPI digital interfaces. The integrated dual-frequency RF front-end allows either GLONASS or BeiDou to be processed concurrently with GPS and Galileo, enabling simultaneous reception of three GNSS systems for faster, more accurate fixes.
Typical applications include wearable fitness trackers, asset trackers, smart watches, IoT sensor nodes, and portable navigation devices where battery life and compact PCB area are critical. The 4.5 x 4.5 mm footprint and 12 mW Super-E power also suit disposable or energy-harvesting designs.
Designers should note the ZOE-M8B is an older-generation product; u-blox recommends the MIA-M10 series for new designs. When migrating from ZOE-M8G, verify the minor differences in the SIM report (UBX-17045131) to ensure compatibility. Provide a clean 1.8V supply rail and follow u-blox's reference layout to maintain RF performance.

Applications typiques
ZOE-M8B convient pour 6 applications: Wearable Fitness Trackers, Asset and Fleet Trackers, Smart Watches and Wearable Health Devices, IoT Sensor Nodes with Location, Portable Navigation Devices, Bike Computers and Cycling Computers.
Wearable Fitness Trackers
The ZOE-M8B's 12 mW Super-E power and -160 dBm tracking sensitivity make it ideal for fitness bands and smart watches where battery life and continuous heart-rate-zone GPS logging are critical. Its 4.5 x 4.5 mm S-LGA footprint fits inside slim wristbands, and the integrated SAW+LNA chain accepts a small passive chip antenna on a flex PCB. Concurrent GPS+Galileo reception cuts time-to-fix in urban canyons, improving run/cycle track accuracy without a switching regulator's noise.
Recommandé
Asset and Fleet Trackers
Battery-powered asset trackers benefit from the ZOE-M8B's 25 mW average power over a 30-minute track, enabling multi-year deployments on primary cells. The built-in anti-jamming and anti-spoofing message-integrity protection from the M8 engine helps ensure trustworthy location reports for logistics, container, and pallet tracking in mixed RF environments. Concurrent GPS+GLONASS+BeiDou reception speeds cold-start acquisition when shipping containers are first powered up after long storage.
Recommandé
Smart Watches and Wearable Health Devices
For smart watches combining GNSS with health sensors, the ZOE-M8B's 12 mW instantaneous power in Super-E mode keeps the always-on location duty cycle within the watch's battery budget, while the 4.5 x 4.5 mm footprint leaves room for optical PPG sensors and a haptic driver. The integrated TCXO accelerates satellite reacquisition after display wake events, and the small package preserves the sleek watch case geometry demanded by consumer designs.
Recommandé
IoT Sensor Nodes with Location
The ZOE-M8B suits IoT sensor nodes that need occasional GPS fixes — for example, smart agriculture soil sensors, environmental monitors, or smart-city parking sensors — because Super-E mode lets the module sleep deeply between acquisitions while still drawing only ~12 mW during the brief track window. Concurrent multi-GNSS reduces fix time under tree canopy, and the integrated SAW+LNA chain tolerates a low-cost passive patch antenna, lowering BOM cost.
Recommandé
Portable Navigation Devices
Handheld GPS units, action cameras, and small drones benefit from the ZOE-M8B's -160 dBm tracking sensitivity and concurrent multi-GNSS for tight sky visibility in forested or urban terrain. The 25 mW average power over typical tracks is acceptable for Li-ion-powered devices, and the S-LGA footprint simplifies integration into compact handheld enclosures. Anti-jamming features improve fix integrity near RF-noisy electronics.
Recommandé
Bike Computers and Cycling Computers
Cycling computers benefit from the ZOE-M8B's combination of low 12 mW Super-E power (saving handlebar-mounted device battery during long rides), -160 dBm sensitivity (locking onto satellites under dense tree cover), and concurrent GPS+Galileo+GLONASS reception for accurate speed and cadence logging. The 4.5 x 4.5 mm S-LGA package fits inside slim head units, and the integrated SAW+LNA chain lets designers use a small passive patch antenna without an external LNA.

Notes de conception
Follow u-blox's reference PCB layout in datasheet UBX-17035164: keep a continuous ground plane under the S-LGA module, route the antenna feed as a 50 ohm controlled-impedance trace, and place the SAW+LNA input as close to the antenna pad as possible. Avoid routing noisy digital lines (UART, I2C, SPI) directly under the RF feed to maintain -160 dBm sensitivity and minimize passive-antenna mismatch.
Power the ZOE-M8B from a clean 1.8V LDO with at least 10uF + 0.1uF ceramic decoupling placed within 3 mm of the supply pin. For Super-E mode to achieve the 12 mW figure, ensure the upstream regulator has <20 mV p-p ripple at the GNSS supply pin. Designers migrating from ZOE-M8G should reuse the same power tree since the supply pinout is identical per SIM UBX-17045131.
Estimated: at average 25 mW over a 30-minute track, a 250 mAh coin cell running at 3V (after boost) yields roughly 30 hours of continuous tracking; verify with your battery's actual discharge curve. Do not place the GNSS module near a switching DC-DC converter's inductor without shielding, and avoid sharing I2C/SPI buses with high-current drivers without isolators, as M8 firmware resets can occur under heavy bus contention.
