ATMEGA88PV-10PU 概要

The Microchip (Atmel) ATMEGA88PV-10PU is a picoPower AVR 8-bit RISC microcontroller with 8 KB In-System Programmable Flash, 512 B EEPROM, 1 KB SRAM, 23 general-purpose I/O lines, and a 10 MHz maximum clock, supplied in a 28-pin PDIP package rated from 1.8 V to 5.5 V across the industrial temperature range.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory, data memory, timers, and serial peripherals on one die. Within the power-management and embedded-systems hierarchy, it sits at the node level of a control system, executing firmware that sequences sensors, actuators, and communication links. The AVR family uses an enhanced RISC architecture with 130 powerful instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle, giving near-MIPS-per-MHz throughput.

Key features of the ATMEGA88PV-10PU include read-while-write Flash for safe in-field firmware updates, 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, three flexible timer/counters with compare modes, a byte-oriented Two-Wire Interface (I2C-compatible), an SPI serial port, and a programmable serial USART. The picoPower technology delivers very low sleep-mode consumption, valuable in battery-powered designs.

Architecturally, the device pairs the AVR core with a Harvard memory bus, separate program and data paths, single-cycle I/O access, and an on-chip debug capability via debugWIRE. Program memory maps as 4K x 16 words, and the internal RC oscillator plus brown-out detector and watchdog reduce external component count.

Typical applications include industrial sensor nodes, consumer appliance controls, motor-driven toys and hobby platforms such as Arduino-class boards, and low-cost instrumentation front ends where 5 V DIP packaging simplifies prototyping and hand assembly.

Design consideration: the 10 MHz speed grade allows safe operation at the full 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range; for 20 MHz operation you must move to the ATmega88-20 versions, which restrict supply options.

This page synthesizes distributor availability, drop-in family alternatives, pinout data, and practical design notes in one place, beyond what a single datasheet page provides.

ATMEGA88PV-10PU の用途: 6 件s: Industrial Sensor Nodes, Hobby and Arduino-Class Boards, Consumer Appliance Control, Battery-Powered Measurement Devices, Motor Control and PWM Drive, UART-Connected Smart Modules.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes

The ATMEGA88PV-10PU fits industrial sensor nodes because its 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range tolerates unregulated or battery-backed rails, and picoPower sleep modes minimize standby current between acquisitions. The 10-channel-capable ADC inputs (PC0-PC5 plus internal channels) digitize analog sensors directly, while the TWI and SPI buses interface digital sensors and the USART reports data over RS-485 transceivers. In a typical node, the MCU sleeps in power-down, wakes on watchdog or pin interrupt, samples with the 10-bit ADC, and transmits a burst - yielding average currents in the microamp range. The 8 KB Flash holds protocol stacks and calibration tables, and the 512 B EEPROM stores node IDs and trimming data that survive power loss.

🧩

Hobby and Arduino-Class Boards

The DIP-28 package and AVR instruction set make the ATMEGA88PV-10PU a natural fit for hobby platforms and educational boards in the Arduino family lineage. It shares the exact DIP-28 pinout of the Arduino UNO's ATmega328P-PU, so a board designed for the 88 can host the 328P without PCB changes, and Arduino sketches compiled for the ATmega88 with appropriate core definitions run unmodified. The 10 MHz speed grade is sufficient for servo timing, serial debugging at 115200 baud, and tone generation; the through-hole package allows socketing, quick swaps, and breadboard prototyping. Compared to SMD MCUs, the DIP format removes reflow-equipment barriers, which is why AVR DIP parts remain staples of STEM kits and rapid firmware experiments.

🔧

Consumer Appliance Control

In washing machines, rice cookers, fan controllers, and small appliances, the ATMEGA88PV-10PU provides all control peripherals in one low-cost chip. Two 8-bit timers and one 16-bit timer generate PWM for triac phase control, motor drive, and buzzer tones; the 10-bit ADC reads thermistors and user potentiometers; and pin-change interrupts debounce membrane keypads. The 1.8 V to 5.5 V range suits transformerless capacitive-drop supplies whose rails sag, improving robustness, while the on-chip brown-out detector prevents corrupt EEPROM writes during brown-outs. The internal 8 MHz RC oscillator eliminates the crystal in non-timing-critical appliances, cutting BOM cost, and the read-while-write Flash supports field firmware updates through the UART during factory service.

📱

Battery-Powered Measurement Devices

Portable meters, loggers, and remotes benefit from the ATMEGA88PV-10PU's combination of picoPower sleep modes and full-voltage-range operation down to 1.8 V, which extracts the last capacity from two alkaline cells or a single lithium cell. The 10-bit ADC with internal 1.1 V reference measures battery voltage and sensor bridges without external references; the asynchronous counter can keep an RTC running from a 32.768 kHz crystal on XTAL pins while the core sleeps. Data is buffered in 1 KB SRAM and committed to the 512 B EEPROM in wear-balanced pages. Typical duty cycling - wake every second, sample, transmit via USART or RF module - keeps average drain low enough for multi-year battery life in compact handheld enclosures.

⚙️

Motor Control and PWM Drive

Small DC motors, fans, and stepper drivers are well served by the ATMEGA88PV-10PU's three timers: the 16-bit Timer1 delivers high-resolution phase-correct PWM while the two 8-bit timers handle tachometer capture and scheduling. The 10 MHz core executes PI control loops with several-kHz update rates, and ADC inputs read current-shunt voltages through an op-amp for closed-loop current limiting. The 23 I/O lines drive dual H-bridge ICs or MOSFET gate drivers directly through PWM outputs on OC0A/OC0B/OC1A/OC1B/OC2A/OC2B pins. Speed grades matter here: at 5 V the 10 MHz part gives ample loop bandwidth for fan and pump control, and the brown-out detector plus watchdog ensure safe PWM shutdown on supply faults.

🌐

UART-Connected Smart Modules

As a co-processor in larger systems, the ATMEGA88PV-10PU offloads real-time tasks - button scanning, LED matrix refresh, infrared decode - from a host Linux processor or main MCU over its hardware USART. The byte-oriented Two-Wire Interface also lets it act as an I2C slave exposing configurable registers to a host master. The 8 KB Flash accommodates protocol parsers for Modus-style ASCII frames and command tables in EEPROM, while the AVR's deterministic single-cycle I/O gives microsecond-accurate pulse generation that RTOS-based hosts struggle to match. The DIP-28 package suits small-batch module boards where sockets allow firmware refresh, and the industrial temperature range keeps the module reliable inside equipment enclosures from -40C to +85C.

What is the maximum clock speed of ATMEGA88PV-10PU?
The ATMEGA88PV-10PU is rated for a maximum clock frequency of 10 MHz. According to the Atmel/Microchip datasheet, the 'V' speed grade operates across the full 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range at this frequency, whereas the '20' speed grades (such as ATMEGA88-20PI) reach 20 MHz. This speed limit is a deliberate trade-off that enables the widest supply-voltage range for battery-powered and low-voltage designs.
How much Flash, EEPROM and SRAM does the ATMEGA88PV-10PU have?
The ATMEGA88PV-10PU has 8 KB of In-System Programmable Flash (organized as 4K x 16), 512 B of EEPROM, and 1 KB of internal SRAM. Per the Microchip ATmega88 product page, the Flash supports read-while-write capability for safe self-programming, and the 512 B EEPROM retains calibration and configuration data through power cycles. If your code size exceeds 8 KB, the pin-compatible ATMEGA168P or ATMEGA328P doubles or quadruples the memory.
Where can I download the ATMEGA88PV-10PU datasheet PDF?
The official datasheet covering the ATmega48P/88P/168P/328P family (which includes the ATMEGA88PV-10PU) is available as a PDF from the Microchip product page at microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega88. The document describes the 8-bit AVR architecture, register maps, and electrical characteristics. Mirror sites such as alldatasheet.com also host the PDF, but Microchip's site is the authoritative source for the latest revision.
What is the difference between ATMEGA88PV-10PU and ATMEGA88PA-PU?
The ATMEGA88PA-PU is the newer 'PA' revision of the same 8 KB AVR in the same 28-pin PDIP package, with functionally consistent main parameters but some electrical characteristic differences, including lower active and sleep currents and updated manufacturing. According to comparison data (FindIC), the two are treated as functional substitutes. Verify brown-out thresholds and DC characteristics in the respective datasheets before substituting in precision analog designs.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA88PV-10PU?
The closest drop-in replacement is the Microchip ATMEGA88PA-PU, which shares the identical 28-pin PDIP pinout, 8 KB Flash, 512 B EEPROM, and 1 KB SRAM. For more headroom, the ATMEGA168PA-PU (16 KB) and ATMEGA328P-PU (32 KB) are pin-to-pin compatible in DIP-28 and run the same code. All are programmed through the same ISP header and supported by the same AVR toolchain, so PCB and firmware changes are minimal.
Can ATMEGA328P-PU replace ATMEGA88PV-10PU on the same PCB?
Yes, the ATMEGA328P-PU can replace the ATMEGA88PV-10PU on the same PCB because both use the same 28-pin DIP footprint with identical pin functions (PD0-PD7, PB0-PB7, PC0-PC6/RESET, XTAL1/XTAL2, AVCC, AREF). The ATMEGA328P adds 32 KB Flash, 1 KB EEPROM, and 2 KB SRAM, a strict superset. Note the 328P speed grades: the standard part runs to 20 MHz at 4.5-5.5 V; use a 'V' grade for 1.8 V operation.
Is the ATMEGA88PV-10PU suitable for 3.3 V battery-powered designs?
Yes. The ATMEGA88PV-10PU operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V, so a 3.3 V lithium cell or regulator is well within range, and Microchip's picoPower technology minimizes sleep-mode current. At 3.3 V the safe clock ceiling is well above the 10 MHz speed grade, so full-speed operation is allowed. Combine with the power-down sleep mode and watchdog wake-up for multi-year battery life in sensor-node applications.
ATMEGA88PV-10PU vs ATtiny88-PU - which should I choose?
Choose the ATMEGA88PV-10PU if you need USART, SPI, and TWI simultaneously plus full AVR ATmega timer resources; choose the ATtiny88-PU when cost matters most and fewer serial peripherals are acceptable. Per Utmel comparison data, the ATtiny88-PU runs to 12 MHz at 1.8-5.5 V with 8 KB Flash, 64 B EEPROM, and 512 B SRAM in a compatible-style DIP package, but offers less EEPROM and SRAM and a reduced peripheral set versus the ATmega.
When should I choose ATMEGA88PV-10PU over ATMEGA88-20PI?
Choose the ATMEGA88PV-10PU when your supply can dip below 2.7 V - for example battery stacks, 3.0 V coin cells, or unregulated rails - because the V-grade part guarantees operation down to 1.8 V. Choose the ATMEGA88-20PI when you need 20 MHz performance and run a solid 4.5-5.5 V supply. Both share the same 28-pin PDIP footprint and firmware compatibility, so the choice is driven by voltage and clock, not layout.
What is the ATMEGA88PV-10PU pinout on the 28-pin DIP package?
The 28-pin PDIP pinout is: pin 1 PC6/RESET, pins 2-6 PD0-PD4 (PD0/PD1 are USART RX/TX), pin 7 VCC, pin 8 GND, pins 9-10 PB6/PB7 (XTAL1/XTAL2), pins 11-13 PD5-PD7, pin 14 PB0, pin 15 PB1, pin 16 PB2, pin 17 PB3/MOSI, pin 18 PB4/MISO, pin 19 PB5/SCK, pin 20 AVCC, pin 21 AREF, pin 22 GND, pins 23-28 PC0-PC3, PC4/SDA, PC5/SCL. This is standard across the ATmega48/88/168/328 DIP-28 family.
Is the ATMEGA88PV-10PU RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes, distributor listings (Mouser) describe the ATMEGA88PV-10PU as a Green, RoHS-compliant part, and the standard PDIP package is tin-plated lead-free. Exact REACH declarations and material composition reports should be pulled from the Microchip product page's eco-document section for your compliance file. The part is a commercial/industrial-grade device, not AEC-Q100 automotive qualified, so do not use it in automotive safety-critical positions without formal qualification.
Where can I buy ATMEGA88PV-10PU and what is the price?
The ATMEGA88PV-10PU is listed at DigiKey (a Rochester Electronics marketplace listing and a Microchip direct listing) and is tracked on Octopart with 1-2 distributors reporting stock. Pricing is typically in the low single-digit USD range in unit quantity, with discounts at 100-piece and 1000-piece breaks; exact prices change frequently, so check the XAIPART price table on this page and Octopart for real-time quotes as of the last verified date shown above.
Is the ATMEGA88PV-10PU in stock and what is the lead time?
Stock status fluctuates: DigiKey has listed the part as ships-today at times, but it is also distributed through Rochester Electronics as a licensed aftermarket source, which suggests supply-chain tightness on the original Microchip channel. Octopart currently reports 1-2 distributor sources. If both channels show zero stock, lead times can extend to weeks; the ATMEGA88PA-PU or ATMEGA328P-PU are firmware-compatible substitutes to consider for production continuity.
What are the key specifications of ATMEGA88PV-10PU that engineers should know?
Key facts: 8-bit AVR RISC core, 130 mostly single-cycle instructions; 8 KB ISP Flash (4K x 16), 512 B EEPROM, 1 KB SRAM; 23 I/O lines; 10 MHz maximum clock; 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply; three timer/counters with compare modes; USART, SPI, and TWI (I2C) serial interfaces; 28-pin PDIP through-hole package; industrial -40C to +85C operation; picoPower low-sleep-current technology; supported by debugWIRE on-chip debugging. Source: Microchip ATmega88 product page and family datasheet.
Is the ATMEGA88PV-10PU the same as the Arduino UNO chip?
Not the same part, but the same family. The Arduino UNO uses the ATmega328P-PU with 32 KB Flash, while the ATMEGA88PV-10PU has 8 KB Flash, 512 B EEPROM, and 1 KB SRAM. They share the identical DIP-28 pinout and AVR core, so an ATMEGA328P-PU can be soldered into an ATmega88 board socket and run 88-class code unchanged. For new UNO-compatible designs, however, spec the ATMEGA328P-PU directly.
What programmer and tools do I need for the ATMEGA88PV-10PU?
Use any AVR ISP programmer (Microchip SNAP, AVRISP mkII, or USBasp) connected to the standard 6-pin ISP header; the device also supports high-voltage parallel programming and debugWIRE single-wire debugging through the RESET pin. The ATMEGA88PV-10PU is fully supported by Microchip Studio (formerly Atmel Studio) and the open-source avr-gcc toolchain with avrdude. Because the part is DIP-28, it drops into ZIF sockets and breadboards for easy iteration.

選定ガイド

Choose the ATMEGA88PV-10PU when you need 8 KB of program space, the full ATmega peripheral set (USART + SPI + TWI), and guaranteed operation anywhere from 1.8 V to 5.5 V - it is the right pick for battery and 3.3 V designs at 10 MHz or below. Pick the ATMEGA88-20PI instead only for 5 V-only designs needing 20 MHz. Pick the ATMEGA88PA-PU for new designs wanting the latest silicon and lower active current at equivalent function. If code size is at risk, jump to the ATMEGA168PA-PU (16 KB) or ATMEGA328P-PU (32 KB, UNO-compatible) - both are pin-to-pin drop-ins in the same DIP-28 footprint with no PCB change. Avoid the ATTINY88-PU unless EEPROM and SRAM budgets of 64 B / 512 B are acceptable. Trade-off summary: this part wins on supply range and cost; it loses on clock speed (10 MHz) and memory versus the 328P.

設計ノート

Connect AVCC (pin 20) to VCC through a low-pass RC filter (e.g., 10 uH inductor or 100-ohm resistor plus 100 nF capacitor) even if no ADC is used - the datasheet requires AVCC within 0.3 V of VCC. Decouple VCC and AVCC each with 100 nF ceramic capacitors placed within a few millimeters of the pins. If the supply can brown out, enable the brown-out detector at 2.7 V for 5 V systems to prevent EEPROM corruption during reset; note BOD adds active-mode current.

In the DIP-28 layout, keep the crystal (if used) within 10 mm of pins 9 and 10 with short traces and place load capacitors directly to the ground plane. Route ADC traces (PC0-PC5) away from PWM and crystal lines to limit coupling into the 10-bit ADC. The PDIP through-hole package tolerates prototyping, but long socket leads add inductance; for high-speed SPI above 4 MHz, keep slave-select and clock stubs short and add series 33-ohm resistors if ringing appears.

Respect the clock-versus-voltage derating: the 10 MHz speed grade is safe across the full 1.8 V to 5.5 V range, but never overclock beyond the grade at low supply. Do not drive PC6/RESET as general I/O unless you accept losing debugWIRE and ISP - re-enabling ISP then requires high-voltage programming. When switching between XTAL and internal RC oscillator sources, update FUSES carefully; a wrong clock-source fuse is the most common cause of a bricked AVR that refuses ISP.
