ATSAMD20E14B-AU 概要

The Microchip ATSAMD20E14B-AU is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ flash microcontroller from the SAM D20E family, delivering up to 48 MHz core performance with 16 KB of Flash and 2 KB of SRAM in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package. It operates from a wide 1.62 V to 3.63 V supply and integrates a 6-channel SERCOM, 12-bit 350 ksps ADC, 10-bit DAC, and multiple timers, balancing low power consumption with rich peripheral integration. The part is rated for the industrial temperature range (-40 C to +85 C) and is qualified to the Microchip AEC-Q100 grade-2 screening flow for harsh environments.

An ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller is a 32-bit RISC processor core designed by Arm for energy-efficient embedded applications. As part of the microcontroller hierarchy, it sits above 8/16-bit legacy cores and below Cortex-M3/M4/M7 devices, pairing a Thumb-2 instruction subset with a single-cycle I/O port for deterministic GPIO response. Within the SAM D20 family, the E (32-pin) variants are the smallest-footprint members, optimized for cost-sensitive and space-constrained designs.

Key features include a 12-bit 350 ksps ADC with up to 14 analog channels, a 10-bit 350 ksps DAC, six SERCOM (serial communication) interfaces configurable as UART, SPI, or I2C, full-speed USB 2.0 device support, and a Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) supporting capacitive buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors. The Cortex-M0+ core executes the Thumb instruction set with deterministic 1.77 DMIPS/MHz performance, supported by a 4-channel DMA engine that offloads memory transfers to reduce CPU load. The integrated event system allows peripherals to trigger each other without CPU intervention, further lowering average power consumption.

Architecturally, the device uses a single AHB-Lite bus matrix with a separate APB bridge for low-speed peripherals, allowing concurrent SERCOM transfers and ADC sampling. The power manager supports Idle, Standby, and Backup sleep modes with wake-on-interrupt and RTC-driven wake from backup, achieving currents down to the single-digit microamp range. On-chip voltage regulation generates the core logic supply from a single external rail, simplifying BOM and PCB layout.

Typical applications include smart-home sensor hubs, low-power IoT edge nodes, capacitive-touch user interfaces for appliances, industrial sensor transmitters, USB HID peripherals, and battery-driven consumer devices such as fitness wearables. The combination of USB device, ADC, and PTC also suits data loggers and Human Interface Device (HID) designs.

When designing with this part, allocate one decoupling capacitor per VDD pin (100 nF X7R plus a bulk 1 uF-4.7 uF), keep SERCOM signal traces short to avoid EMI, and connect unused I/O to VDD or GND through software-enabled pull resistors to reduce sleep current. Programming is supported through the SWD interface using Atmel/Microchip Studio, MPLAB X, or pyOCD.

This page consolidates distributor pricing, drop-in pin-compatible alternatives, application circuits, and PCB design notes to help engineers evaluate the ATSAMD20E14B-AU for both new designs and legacy upgrades.

🧩

Smart Home Sensor Hub

The ATSAMD20E14B-AU is well suited to smart-home sensor hubs that aggregate inputs from temperature, humidity, motion, and door/window sensors. The 12-bit 350 ksps ADC scans up to 14 analog channels sequentially while the SERCOM interfaces run I2C sensor buses and UART to a wireless module. With 16 KB Flash and 2 KB SRAM, the MCU runs a lightweight scheduler, BLE/Zigbee commissioning logic, and OTA bootloader hooks. Its sub-10 uA Standby current lets battery-powered door sensors last several years on a single CR2032, while the PTC supports capacitive touch buttons on the hub front panel without a dedicated touch IC.

💡

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) integrated in the ATSAMD20E14B-AU drives up to 14 self-capacitance or mutual-capacitance touch channels without an external touch IC, reducing BOM and PCB area. The 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ executes Microchip's QTouch library in well under 1 ms per scan, leaving CPU time for haptic feedback, LED animation, and serial communication to the host. The 6-channel SERCOM drives I2C displays and UART connections to a master controller. The TQFP-32 footprint exposes enough GPIO to multiplex LED drivers, buzzer PWM, and I2C, all while keeping touch sensor SNR above the 1000:1 ratio required for reliable glove operation.

🖥️

USB HID Peripheral Device

With on-chip USB 2.0 Full-Speed device and 48 MHz of CPU headroom, the ATSAMD20E14B-AU serves as a USB keyboard, mouse, custom HID, or CDC virtual-COM bridge without external PHY components. The 12-bit ADC reads joystick potentiometers or analog buttons while SERCOM channels provide SPI/I2C for OLED displays and I/O expansion. The 16 KB Flash accommodates HID descriptor tables and the bootloader, while 2 KB SRAM is enough for descriptor buffers and report FIFOs. Bus-powered designs run directly from the 5 V USB rail after a 3.3 V LDO, with the MCU's low Standby current saving power between user events.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Transmitter

Industrial 4-20 mA loop-powered or battery-backed sensor transmitters rely on the ATSAMD20E14B-AU for low-power measurement and conditioning. The 12-bit ADC samples bridge, RTD, or 4-20 mA sense resistors, while the integrated OpAmp-like gain stage (via on-chip peripherals) scales signals before conversion. SERCOM interfaces drive RS-485 or HART modems, and the RTC with calendar wakes the MCU for periodic measurements at user-defined intervals. The -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature range and robust on-chip voltage regulator make this MCU a fit for factory automation, HVAC, and process control installations.

📱

Battery-Driven Fitness Wearable

Wearables such as heart-rate chest straps, fitness bands, and sleep trackers benefit from the ATSAMD20E14B-AU's sub-10 uA Standby current and compact 7x7 mm TQFP package. The 12-bit ADC samples PPG (photoplethysmography) photodiode signals while the event system lets ADC conversions trigger DMA transfers to memory without waking the CPU. The RTC with calendar and interrupt-driven wakeup supports always-on timekeeping, and SERCOM interfaces stream data to BLE SoCs over UART. Combined with a CR2032 coin cell, the device achieves multi-year battery life for periodic-logging wearables, and the 48 MHz core supports on-device DSP for simple step-counting algorithms.

🏭

Home Appliance Control Board

Refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, and induction-cooktop control boards use the ATSAMD20E14B-AU to drive BLDC motors, read keypads and rotary encoders, and communicate with the main inverter board. The 6-channel SERCOM set supports I2C temperature/humidity sensors, SPI display drivers, and UART links to a Wi-Fi/BLE module for IoT connectivity. The 10-bit DAC generates reference voltages for analog front-ends, while the event system coordinates timer-driven zero-cross detection for TRIAC control without CPU load. Operating from 3.3 V with industrial temperature rating, the MCU tolerates the warm, electrically noisy environment behind an appliance front panel.

⚡

Smart Metering Endpoint

Smart electricity, gas, and water meter endpoints require the long battery life, robust peripherals, and accurate metering functions that the ATSAMD20E14B-AU provides. The 12-bit ADC with PGA measures low-level shunt or Rogowski-coil currents, while the RTC with calendar tracks time-of-use tariffs for billing data. SERCOM drives M-Bus, wM-Bus, or LoRaWAN radio links for remote readout, and the Peripheral Touch Controller supports meter's mechanical-button replacement for tamper-resistant operation. With Standby currents below 10 uA and 1.62 V minimum supply, the MCU runs for 10+ years on a single lithium battery pack.

設計ノート

Place one 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor adjacent to each VDD pin (4, 17, 30) and a single 1 uF-4.7 uF bulk capacitor near the package. The on-chip LDO generates the 1.2 V core rail from VDD, so no external core-voltage rail is required. Add a 4.7 uF tantalum or ceramic reserve capacitor on VDDIN if the design switches heavy loads (radio PA, motor driver) on the same rail - the SAM D20's low-voltage detector triggers brown-out reset at ~1.6 V.

Route the SWDIO/SWDK pins (typically PA30/PA31) to a 2x5 0.05-inch Cortex Debug header with 4.7 kOhm pull-ups on SWDIO. Keep SERCOM trace lengths under 25 mm and avoid routing them parallel to switching power traces to limit cross-talk. For designs using the on-chip USB device, the USB DP/DM pair must be 90-ohm differential and routed within 2 mm of each other; place the 1.5 kOhm pull-up on D+ only after VBUS detection.

Configure all unused I/O as inputs with enabled internal pull-downs in firmware before entering Standby sleep - floating inputs can leak several hundred microamps and erase battery-life budgets. Do not exceed VDD + 0.3 V on any GPIO; the SAM D20 is not 5 V tolerant. When migrating code from earlier silicon revision (ATSAMD20E14A-AU, Rev A) to this Rev B device, verify the SERCOM baud-rate register reload values - the Rev B silicon tightens the timing margin at -40 C.
