ATSAML11E14A-MUT 概要

The Microchip Technology ATSAML11E14A-MUT is an ARM Cortex-M23 based SAM L11 microcontroller with 32-bit processing at 32 MHz, 16 KB of Flash memory, and 8 KB of SRAM, housed in a 32-pin VQFN (5x5 mm) package. It integrates chip-level security with ARM TrustZone technology, secure key storage, and chip-level tamper resistance, and is rated for industrial temperature operation up to 85C. The SAM L11 family is positioned as the industry's first and lowest-power Cortex-M23 MCU with hardware-based security, consuming less than 25 uA/MHz in active mode and less than 100 nA in sleep mode.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a compact integrated circuit that combines a CPU core, program memory, working RAM, and a rich set of peripherals on a single silicon die. The Cortex-M23 is an ARMv8-M Baseline architecture core that brings TrustZone for Cortex-M hardware isolation, deterministic interrupts, and Thumb-2 instruction efficiency to cost-sensitive embedded applications. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, microcontrollers sit below microprocessors and application processors; the SAM L11 belongs to the ultra-low-power security-enabled MCU class, between general-purpose MCUs and secure-element ICs.

Key features include hardware cryptographic accelerators (AES, SHA, True Random Number Generator), TrustZone isolation between secure and non-secure code regions, a 12-bit 1 MSPS ADC, multiple SERCOM serial interfaces that can be configured as UART/SPI/I2C, and a full-speed USB device port. The 16 KB Flash supports secure boot, and the part ships in Tape & Reel (T&R) packaging for high-volume SMT assembly. The Crypto variant suffix 'C' (denoted by the T at end of MUT) indicates this is the secure TrustZone part, distinguishing it from the non-secure baseline variants in the same pinout.

Typical applications include IoT end nodes that require secure firmware updates, sensor hubs with authenticated telemetry, smart-meter secure elements, medical wearables requiring HIPAA-style data isolation, and industrial keyless-entry or asset-tracking modules. The compact 32-VQFN footprint and 85C rating make it well-suited for space-constrained, security-conscious edge devices.

When designing with this MCU, allocate sufficient decoupling (100 nF + 1 uF minimum) close to VDD pins, and place a 32.768 kHz crystal across the XIN/XOUT pins if low-power RTC operation is required. TrustZone-aware firmware development is essential; consult the SAM L11 TrustZone application note from Microchip before porting legacy Cortex-M code.

主な用途

ATSAML11E14A-MUT の用途: 6 件s: Secure IoT Sensor Nodes, Smart Meter Secure Element, Medical Wearable Data Isolation, Industrial Keyless Entry and Access Control, Battery-Powered Asset Tracker, Authenticated Sensor Hubs.

🧩

Secure IoT Sensor Nodes

The ATSAML11E14A-MUT fits secure IoT sensor endpoints because it combines ARM TrustZone isolation with hardware AES/SHA/TRNG in a 32-VQFN (5x5) footprint. Active current under 25 uA/MHz and sleep current under 100 nA let a coin-cell-powered node operate for years while keeping authenticated telemetry keys in TrustZone-protected Flash. The 16 KB Flash hosts a TrustZone-aware secure boot plus a non-secure application region for sensor processing, and the 12-bit ADC plus multiple SERCOM interfaces support temperature, humidity, and acceleration sensor chains with I2C or SPI.

⚡

Smart Meter Secure Element

Utility smart meters require authenticated firmware updates and tamper-resistant key storage, both delivered by the ATSAML11E14A-MUT's TrustZone and secure key storage. The MCU's 1.62 V to 3.63 V supply range interfaces directly with battery-backed metering rails, and the 85C industrial temperature rating survives meter enclosures. Its hardware cryptographic accelerators (AES-256 and SHA-256) accelerate DLMS/COSEM and signed-firmware workflows without taxing the Cortex-M23 core, while the small 32-VQFN package fits inside tamper-detection enclosures alongside metrology ASICs.

💊

Medical Wearable Data Isolation

Medical wearables such as continuous glucose monitors and pulse oximeters benefit from the ATSAML11E14A-MUT's TrustZone to separate PHI processing from Bluetooth LE stack code, satisfying HIPAA-style data isolation requirements. The 16 KB Flash is sufficient for a TrustZone-aware BLE firmware plus secure-boot image, and the 32 MHz Cortex-M23 core handles sensor sampling and crypto operations. The 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) package fits wristband and patch form factors, while the <100 nA sleep current preserves multi-day battery life between charges.

🏭

Industrial Keyless Entry and Access Control

Access-control readers require tamper-resistant credential verification, which the ATSAML11E14A-MUT provides through its secure key storage and chip-level tamper resistance. The Cortex-M23 core at 32 MHz executes challenge-response protocols against the hardware AES accelerator with deterministic latency, and TrustZone keeps root keys isolated from non-secure application code. The 32-VQFN package plus 85C rating suits outdoor keypad housings, while USB Full-Speed enables secure configuration via USB CDC during installer commissioning.

📱

Battery-Powered Asset Tracker

Asset trackers deployed in cold-chain logistics, rental fleets, and tool-tracking use cases benefit from the ATSAML11E14A-MUT's sub-100 nA sleep current and TrustZone-protected firmware authenticity. The MCU wakes periodically to read GPS/GNSS or BLE beacons, authenticates the location payload via SHA-256, and returns to sleep, all within a 16 KB Flash budget. Its 1.62 V minimum supply supports single-cell Li-coin or LiSOCl2 primary batteries common in long-life trackers, and the 32-VQFN (5x5) footprint leaves room for an integrated antenna PCB.

🏭

Authenticated Sensor Hubs

Industrial sensor hubs aggregate data from multiple analog and digital sensors and must prove data provenance. The ATSAML11E14A-MUT's 12-bit ADC plus SERCOM channels let it interface with 4-20 mA analog chains and I2C/SPI digital sensors, while TrustZone signs each aggregated payload with a hardware-protected key before forwarding to a gateway. The 32-VQFN package and 85C rating fit DIN-rail mounted hubs operating in factory environments, and the Cortex-M23's deterministic interrupts keep time-critical control loops bounded.

What is the operating voltage of the ATSAML11E14A-MUT?

ATSAML11E14A-MUT vs ATSAML11E14A-AUT - which is better for industrial designs?
ATSAML11E14A-MUT ships in 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) while ATSAML11E14A-AUT ships in 32-TQFP (7x7 mm). Both share identical silicon, so electrical performance and security features are equivalent. For space-constrained industrial designs, choose the -MUT (VQFN, better thermal pad and lower profile); choose the -AUT (TQFP) for hand-soldering prototypes and through-hole-style hand-rework on legacy test fixtures.
When should I choose the ATSAML11E14A-MUT over the ATSAML10E14A-MUT?
Choose the ATSAML11E14A-MUT when you need hardware security: TrustZone isolation, secure boot, hardware AES/SHA, and a True Random Number Generator. Choose the ATSAML10E14A-MUT (same VQFN-32, Cortex-M23) when security is not required and you want a slightly lower cost. The two share the same pinout, so PCB reuse is straightforward when migrating from non-secure to secure firmware.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the ATSAML11E14A-MUT?
The closest drop-in replacements are ATSAML11E15A-MUT (32 KB Flash, same package) and ATSAML11E16A-MUT (64 KB Flash, same package). All three share the same 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) footprint, ARM Cortex-M23 core, TrustZone hardware, and pinout per the SAM L11 family datasheet. For a non-secure substitute in the same package, ATSAML10E14A-MUT is pin-to-pin compatible but lacks TrustZone.
Can the ATSAML11D14A-MUT replace the ATSAML11E14A-MUT?
The ATSAML11D14A-MUT (SAM L11 'D' series) has lower Flash density than the 'E' variant and is not a true drop-in for firmware that fills the 16 KB E-region. Per the Microchip SAM L11 datasheet, 'D' and 'E' suffixes indicate Flash size and feature tier; verify memory map and TrustZone configuration registers before substituting. The pinout and package are identical, so PCB-level compatibility is preserved.
Is there a cross-brand equivalent to the ATSAML11E14A-MUT?
No direct cross-brand drop-in exists for the ATSAML11E14A-MUT because TrustZone and the SAM L11 peripheral set are Microchip-specific. Functionally similar Cortex-M23 parts with TrustZone from other vendors include NXP's LPC55S0x (LPC55S04JBD64) and ST's STM32WBA52, but they differ in package and pinout, so PCB redesign is required. For true drop-in compatibility, stay within the Microchip SAM L11 family.
What are the key specifications of ATSAML11E14A-MUT that engineers should know?
Key specifications of the ATSAML11E14A-MUT: ARM Cortex-M23 core at 32 MHz, 16 KB Flash with TrustZone, 8 KB SRAM, 1.62 V to 3.63 V supply, less than 25 uA/MHz active current, less than 100 nA sleep current, 12-bit ADC, hardware AES/SHA/TRNG, 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) package, -40C to +85C industrial temperature. Per Microchip documentation, this is the lowest-power Cortex-M23 MCU family with hardware isolation in the market.

設計ノート

Place a 100 nF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of every VDD pin, and add a bulk 1 uF to 4.7 uF ceramic close to the IC for transient load support. The SAM L11 has separate VDDANA (analog) and VDDIO (digital) rails on related packages; on 32-VQFN both are tied, but still split the decoupling network between analog and digital sections to avoid ADC reference noise. Avoid ferrite beads on the analog rail - they inject noise into the ADC reference path.

Route SWDIO/SWCLK away from SERCOM signal traces and keep them shorter than 50 mm to avoid debugger signal-integrity issues. Solder the exposed thermal pad (pin 32 on VQFN-32) to a continuous ground copper pour with at least 4 thermal vias to the inner ground plane. This both grounds the reference and dissipates up to ~150 mW typical active power at 32 MHz without raising the junction temperature.

Estimated: total active current at 32 MHz and full GPIO toggling is roughly 32 MHz x 25 uA/MHz = 800 uA plus peripheral contribution. For TrustZone development, do not assume linker section names from Cortex-M0/M4 projects - SAM L11 requires explicit 'secure' and 'non-secure' linker regions in MPLAB XC32. Also verify the NVMCTRL region lock bits before mass production; an unlocked boot region allows flash read-out through SWD and defeats the secure-boot chain.

USB Full-Speed requires a 90 ohm differential impedance on the DP/DM pair (PA24/PA25). Match the trace lengths to within 0.5 mm and keep the pair over a continuous ground reference with no splits. Place the ESD protection diode within 5 mm of the USB connector. If USB is unused, leave DP and DM as NC; do not route them through noisy switching regions, as the internal pull-up can false-trigger if noise exceeds the input threshold.
