MC13892AJVL 概要

The NXP (formerly Freescale) MC13892AJVL is a Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) companion chip designed for the i.MX51, i.MX37, i.MX35, i.MX3 and i.MX27 application processor families, integrating 4 adjustable buck regulators and 12 adjustable LDO regulators in a 186-ball MAPBGA (12x12 mm) package. It functions as a power management and user interface IC (PMUIC), delivering sequenced power rails, battery charging support, LED drivers and a touch-screen interface for portable handheld and mobile platforms. Targeted applications include personal media players, navigation devices, e-readers, smart mobile terminals and other battery-powered i.MX-based embedded systems.

A PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a system-level IC that consolidates multiple voltage regulators, supervisors, battery chargers and power-sequencing logic into a single device. In the power-management hierarchy, the MC13892AJVL sits between the discrete point-of-load regulators and the application processor, providing configurable rail-by-rail control through an SPI/I2C interface. By integrating 4 synchronous buck converters and 12 LDOs alongside a 10-bit ADC and battery charger, it eliminates dozens of discrete components and shrinks the power section to a single BGA footprint.

Key differentiating features include 4 adjustable buck regulators for core, memory and I/O rails, 12 adjustable LDO regulators for peripheral supplies, an integrated 10-bit ADC for battery and system monitoring, hardware power sequencing tied to the i.MX power-up state machine, integrated LED drivers, a 4-wire touch-screen interface, and a complete battery charging block with thermistor input. The device is configured and monitored over SPI or I2C from the host application processor, allowing dynamic voltage scaling, fault recovery and on-the-fly rail enabling.

Architecturally, the buck converters use synchronous PWM control with internal MOSFETs to deliver high efficiency across the full load range, while the LDOs share a common bandgap reference for tight regulation. The on-chip state machine handles the complex i.MX power-up/power-down sequencing, eliminating the need for external logic. The 10-bit ADC monitors battery voltage, current, die temperature and charger input, while a built-in Coulomb counter supports accurate fuel gauging. Communication to the host is provided through both SPI and I2C for flexibility across different i.MX designs.

Typical application use cases include powering the i.MX51 in portable navigation devices, the i.MX37/i.MX35 in smart mobile terminals, the i.MX27 in personal media players, and the i.MX3 in e-readers and low-power handhelds. The wide VIN range and configurable sequencing make it equally suited to single-cell Li-ion powered products.

When designing with the MC13892AJVL, observe the recommended PCB layout for the MAPBGA exposed pad - a continuous ground plane under the package and at least 8 thermal vias directly beneath the die pad are required to keep the junction temperature within safe limits under heavy buck-converter switching loads.

設計ノート

The MC13892AJVL 186-MAPBGA package requires a continuous ground plane directly beneath the exposed thermal pad on the top PCB layer, connected by at least 8 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch) to inner ground planes. Under full load with all 4 synchronous bucks switching, the device can dissipate approximately 1.0 to 1.5 W. Without proper thermal pad soldering and via array, junction temperature can exceed 105 C in enclosed handheld enclosures, triggering thermal shutdown. Keep high-current buck input/output capacitor loops short and directly adjacent to the package balls.

Route the SPI/I2C bus traces (SCLK, MOSI, MISO, CS, SDA, SCL) with 50 ohm characteristic impedance and keep them away from the buck converter switching nodes (SW1-SW4) to avoid coupling noise into the digital interface. Use a 4-layer PCB stackup with dedicated ground and power planes; the inner ground plane directly beneath the BGA balls provides both shielding and thermal dissipation. Per NXP application note, place input bulk capacitors within 5 mm of the corresponding supply balls and use 10 uF X5R ceramic in parallel with 0.1 uF X7R for high-frequency decoupling.

The MC13892AJVL buck converters support dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) through SPI/I2C writes to the regulator voltage registers. When changing a buck output voltage under load, ramp at no faster than the datasheet-specified slew rate to avoid inductor current overshoot and output voltage ringing. The LDOs share a common bandgap reference and require a minimum 1 uF ceramic output capacitor for stability - using smaller values can cause oscillation. For battery charging, configure the thermistor input with a 10 kohm NTC network per the NXP reference schematic.

Do not apply input voltage higher than the absolute maximum VIN rating before the device is properly enabled - the MC13892AJVL requires correct power-on sequencing to avoid in-rush current into un-powered LDOs. Always configure the i.MX power-sequencing state machine through SPI/I2C before enabling the corresponding buck or LDO rail. A common mistake is leaving the NRST (reset) line floating; tie it through a 10 kohm pull-up to the appropriate rail and ensure it is released only after all input voltages are stable. Finally, the touch-screen interface pins are not 5 V tolerant - level-shift any external 5 V signals before connecting to the TSXP/TSXN/TSYP/TSYN pins.
