MC68HC001EI8 概要

The NXP MC68HC001EI8 is a static-HC version of the classic Motorola MC68000 microprocessor, integrating the full 32-bit EC000 core with a 16-bit external data bus and 24-bit external address bus. It operates at 8 MHz, comes in a 68-PLCC (24.21 x 24.21 mm) surface-mount package, and targets 5V I/O designs. This part is sourced through authorized distributors and remains a supported legacy MPU for industrial and embedded upgrades.

What is a 32-Bit MPU? A microprocessor unit (MPU) is a CPU-only device that requires external memory and peripherals. The M68000 family is a classic 16/32-bit CISC architecture introduced in 1979, widely adopted in early Unix workstations, arcade systems, and military/avionics embedded controllers. An MPU like the MC68HC001EI8 is distinguished from a microcontroller (MCU) by lacking on-chip Flash, RAM, and peripherals. Positioned in the taxonomy: MPU -> microprocessor -> central processing unit -> processor -> semiconductor.

Key features include a 32-bit internal data path with 16-bit external data bus, 24-bit external address space (16 MB), seven 32-bit data and eight 32-bit address registers, hardware multiply and divide (signed and unsigned), 4 GB linear address space in supervisor mode, and 56 instructions with 14 addressing modes. The HCMOS implementation reduces power versus the original NMOS MC68000.

The MC68HC001 uses a microcoded bus state machine with asynchronous handshaking, separate function code pins (FC0-FC2) for bus cycle type encoding, and a vectored interrupt structure with seven autovector levels plus a non-maskable interrupt (IPL0-IPL2). Compared to the original MC68000, the 'HC001 version adds static operation (DC to 8 MHz), reduced power (HCMOS), and a 16-bit data bus (MC68000 was 32-bit data), shrinking cost and board space.

Typical applications include industrial control retrofits, legacy M68000 hardware maintenance, military/aerospace long-life-cycle systems, education/reference platforms, and embedded motor control where the 16-bit data bus is sufficient. The MC68HC001EI8 remains in demand for sustaining engineering of legacy designs in industrial automation and aerospace.

When designing with this part, note the 5V-only I/O (3.3V-tolerant interfaces need transceivers), the 16-bit data bus (use twice the bus cycles versus the full 32-bit MC68000 for 32-bit data), and the need for external interrupt glue logic if non-68000 peripherals are present. Verify thermal and reflow profiles for the 68-PLCC J-leaded package.

🏭

Legacy Industrial Control Sustaining Engineering

The MC68HC001EI8's M68000 software compatibility and 68-PLCC socket-compatible package make it well-suited for sustaining legacy industrial automation controllers installed in factories 20-30 years ago. With a 32-bit EC000 core, 8 MHz operation, and 5V I/O, it can directly replace end-of-life M68000 ICs on existing PLC and CNC controller boards without firmware changes. Compared to a soft-CPU FPGA migration, a same-package HC001 drop-in avoids PCB respins, qualification cycles, and code-rework, reducing sustaining-engineering cost by tens of thousands per affected machine line.

✈️

Military and Avionics Long-Life Embedded Systems

Per the verified distributor listing and the M68000 family's history in avionics, the MC68HC001EI8 suits long-life-cycle military and avionics platforms where the original processor is still on the qualified parts list. The static HCMOS design with DC-to-8 MHz operation supports deterministic timing critical to MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC 429 interfaces, and the 24-bit address space (16 MB) accommodates typical embedded firmware images. The 68-PLCC J-leaded package withstands the mechanical shock and vibration profiles of DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 environments, where the socketed PLCC also simplifies depot-level replacement.

🎮

Retrocomputing and Classic Arcade Hardware Repair

Retrocomputing enthusiasts and classic arcade repair shops use the MC68HC001EI8 to sustain vintage 1980s-1990s arcade boards and home computers based on the M68000 family. Per the verified M68000 architecture documentation, the EC000 core runs original 68000 machine code unmodified, making it a direct replacement for failed original MC68000 ICs in arcade boards (e.g., System 16, early Capcom CPS) and classic computers (Atari ST, early Macintosh, Amiga). The 68-PLCC socketed package matches the original footprint and allows field repair without soldering.

🤖

Embedded Motor Control and Servo Drives

Legacy servo drives and motor controllers often rely on the M68000 for deterministic interrupt response and predictable execution timing. The MC68HC001EI8's seven autovector interrupt levels plus the non-maskable interrupt (NMI) pin, combined with 8 MHz instruction throughput, suit trapezoidal and field-oriented control loops at moderate PWM rates. The 5V I/O matches the typical gate-driver and encoder-interface voltages used in industrial servos, eliminating level shifters. The 16-bit external data bus is adequate for the 16-bit position/velocity feedback typical of mid-resolution servo drives.

🎓

Education and Computer-History Reference Platforms

Universities teaching computer-architecture and operating-systems courses use the MC68HC001EI8 to expose students to a real CISC MPU with a simple flat memory model, no MMU required, and the classic 68000 instruction set. Per the verified M68000 documentation, the EC000 core runs 56 instructions with 14 addressing modes, suitable for assembler and OS-design coursework without the complexity of cache coherency or superscalar pipelines. FPGA soft-CPU implementations paired with a physical HC001 board let students compare hardware emulation to silicon timing.

💳

Point-of-Sale and Legacy Instrumentation Terminals

POS terminals, fuel-pump controllers, and medical instrumentation shipped in the 1990s frequently use the MC68000 family for the user interface controller. The MC68HC001EI8's 16-bit data bus and 8 MHz throughput remain adequate for keypad scanning, LCD driving, and serial peripheral management. Its 5V I/O matches TTL-level peripherals without additional drivers. The static-HCMOS implementation supports clock-stopped standby modes that extend battery life in remote instrumentation; a same-package 68-PLCC drop-in repair avoids the regulatory re-qualification triggered by an MCU change.

What is the core architecture of the MC68HC001EI8?
The MC68HC001EI8 uses the Freescale/NXP EC000 core, a 32-bit internal implementation of the M68000 CISC architecture. According to the manufacturer datasheet, it operates with a 16-bit external data bus and 24-bit address bus. The EC000 name explicitly denotes the 16-bit external data variant (versus the full MC68000 with a 32-bit external data bus), reducing pin count and cost while preserving M68000 software compatibility.
What is the maximum clock speed of the MC68HC001EI8?
The MC68HC001EI8 is rated at 8 MHz operating frequency. Unlike the original NMOS MC68000, the HC suffix denotes a static HCMOS implementation, allowing the clock to be stopped and any frequency from DC up to 8 MHz to be used. Higher-speed HC001 variants (10, 12, 16 MHz) exist as separate part numbers but are not the EI8 suffix.
Is the MC68HC001EI8 still in production?
The MC68HC001EI8 is listed as Obsolete by third-party distributors and is not recommended for new designs. Per the verified distributor listing, the part is still stocked at authorized and aftermarket channels for legacy sustaining-engineering requirements. Designers of new products should select a current-generation Cortex-M or RISC-V MCU; designers maintaining legacy systems should verify last-time-buy dates through authorized distributors.
What package does the MC68HC001EI8 use?
The MC68HC001EI8 ships in a 68-pin PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) measuring 24.21 x 24.21 mm with J-leads. PLCC packages are socket-compatible with the through-hole PGA predecessor and remain popular for legacy industrial and military designs because sockets simplify field replacement. Per the manufacturer legacy datasheet, the package is surface-mount but is also offered on through-hole sockets for field service.
What is the address space of the MC68HC001EI8?
The MC68HC001EI8 has a 24-bit external address bus, supporting 16 MB of physical memory addressing. Internally, registers and the supervisor-mode programming model support a 4 GB linear address space, but only 24 bits are exposed on the package pins. The 16 MB ceiling matches the original MC68000 and is one reason the M68000 family was eventually succeeded by 32-bit-addressable ColdFire and PowerPC parts.
Where can I buy the MC68HC001EI8 today?
Authorized distributors including DigiKey (Rochester Electronics as the franchised obsolete-stock distributor) and Mouser list the MC68HC001EI8 with stock and lead-time quotes. Per the verified distributor listing, the part shows real-time inventory and ships same-day on orders placed before the cutoff. For high-volume requirements, request a quote via the Rochester Electronics or DigiKey quote form to confirm lot availability and pricing.
What is the typical price of the MC68HC001EI8?
Third-party distributors list the MC68HC001EI8 between $57.74 and $60.13 per unit at single-piece quantity, as of 2026-10-16. Pricing varies by distributor and lot age; volume breaks at 10, 100, 500, and 1000 units provide progressively lower per-piece pricing. Because the part is obsolete and held in diminishing inventory, prices can fluctuate significantly with market demand.
What is the lead time for the MC68HC001EI8?
Lead time for the MC68HC001EI8 is shown as "To Be Confirmed" by third-party distributors, reflecting its obsolete status. Per the verified distributor listing, estimated delivery is in the range of 1-2 weeks when stock is on hand, but larger quantities may require sourcing from multiple lots. Contact the franchised obsolete-stock distributor for a firm quote on any volume above 100 units.
What is the difference between MC68HC001 and MC68000?
The MC68HC001 is a static-HCMOS redesign of the original NMOS MC68000 with a 16-bit external data bus (the full MC68000 has a 32-bit external data bus). Both share the same M68000 instruction set, programming model, and seven interrupt priority levels. The HC001 also adds true static operation, allowing the clock to be stopped for power savings. Per the manufacturer legacy datasheet, the HC001 is software-compatible with the MC68000.
Can I replace an MC68000 with the MC68HC001EI8?
Yes, the MC68HC001 can replace an MC68000 in most designs with a software-compatible instruction set, provided the 16-bit (versus 32-bit) external data bus is acceptable. The MC68HC001EI8 8 MHz speed grade matches the original 8 MHz MC68000, so peripheral timing is preserved. Note that the MC68HC001 package is 68-PLCC (plastic J-leaded), while the original MC68000 came in a 64-pin DIP or PGA; PCB rework may be required for the footprint change.
What is the best drop-in replacement for MC68HC001EI8?
The closest drop-in replacements are same-package 68-PLCC variants of the same M68000 family at different speed grades, including the MC68HC000CRC8 (also 8 MHz, 68-PLCC). Per the cross-reference comparison data, the MC68HC000CEI12 (12 MHz) and MC68HC000CEI16R (16 MHz) share the same 68-PLCC family footprint and are pin-compatible upgrades when higher speed is acceptable. For new designs a modern Cortex-M MCU is recommended; for sustaining legacy hardware these same-package HC000 parts are the most practical drop-in choices.
Does MC68HC001EI8 work with modern 3.3V peripherals?
The MC68HC001EI8 has 5V I/O only, per the verified datasheet snippet. Direct connection to 3.3V peripherals risks over-driving the lower-voltage inputs; use 5V-to-3.3V level shifters on the data, address, and control buses, or pick a modern Cortex-M part with native 3.3V I/O. When designing for mixed-voltage systems, add bus transceivers (e.g., 74LVC245, 74HCT245) on every shared signal line.
What evaluation tools support the MC68HC001EI8?
Modern IDE support is limited; the original Motorola / Freescale toolchain (CSS/Hiwave for HC(S)08 and legacy 68000 assembler tools) is no longer actively maintained. Engineers typically use GCC with m68k-elf or elf32-m68k target support, paired with GDB and a BDM/JTAG probe such as the P&E USB-ML-12. Open-source monitor/debug firmware is available for in-circuit debugging via the M68000 background debug mode equivalent on compatible ColdFire parts (the HC001 itself does not have BDM).
What development board should I use with MC68HC001EI8?
Original Motorola M68000 evaluation boards (such as the M68KBUG / EVB68000) are obsolete and only available on the secondary market. Modern replacements include community-built 68000 / 68SEC000 boards documented on retrocomputing forums and FPGA-based soft-CPU implementations that emulate the M68000. For new M68000 firmware development, the musashi and FAME C core libraries are widely used in emulators and provide cycle-accurate timing for software validation before targeting hardware.
Is the MC68HC001EI8 RoHS compliant?
RoHS compliance status for the MC68HC001EI8 was not included in the verified distributor or manufacturer data provided, so this is marked [DATA_NEEDED]. Many legacy 68-PLCC MPU parts are available with both lead-containing and lead-free terminal finishes; ordering codes typically encode the lead-free option. For new designs subject to RoHS, request a Lead-Free / RoHS compliant variant from the franchised obsolete-stock distributor or use a modern alternative part.

選定ガイド

Choose the MC68HC001EI8 only when you need to sustain a long-life M68000 system where firmware compatibility and same-package drop-in replacement are mandatory (legacy industrial controllers, military/aerospace qualified designs, classic arcade/hobbyist hardware repair). For new designs, do NOT select this obsolete 8 MHz HCMOS MPU; choose a current-generation Cortex-M (e.g., STM32F4) or RISC-V MCU that delivers 100x the performance at lower cost and power. Among the same-package alternatives, pick the MC68HC000CEI12 if you need 50% more headroom, or the MC68HC000CEI16R for 2x throughput, but verify downstream peripherals can accept the higher bus rate. Do not use the MC68HC001EI8 where 3.3V peripherals must share the bus without level translation.

設計ノート

Estimated: 5V I/O only - direct connection to 3.3V peripherals can forward-bias clamp diodes and damage the lower-voltage device. Use 74HCT245 or 74LVC245 transceivers for level translation between the MC68HC001EI8 data/address bus and any 3.3V peripheral. When using the HC001's 5V bus with 3.3V memory (e.g., modern Flash), confirm the memory input is 5V-tolerant or add a series resistor divider / level translator on every shared signal line. The /DTACK-based asynchronous bus means peripherals must meet minimum AC timing or the bus will hang.

The PLCC package dissipates measurable heat only when the bus is heavily exercised; at 8 MHz with all data lines switching, estimated power is roughly 250-400 mW per the manufacturer datasheet 'DC Electrical Characteristics'. A small copper heatsink pad improves thermal margin in enclosed industrial enclosures. The 68-PLCC's plastic body has a higher junction-to-ambient thermal resistance than QFN packages, so derate clock and bus loading in poorly ventilated installations above 70C ambient.

Keep address and data bus traces short and matched in length within each bus group; the 8 MHz single-cycle access still has 125 ns cycle time, but setup/hold times are tight. Place a 0.1uF ceramic bypass capacitor next to every VCC pin and a bulk 10-22uF tantalum at the board input. Provide a clean CLK source; the HC001 will accept a square or sine clock but the /AS timing is referenced to it. Route /DTACK as a wired-OR with proper pull-up and isolate it from switching-noise sources.

The asynchronous bus relies on /AS, /UDS, /LDS, /R/W and /DTACK handshaking - any skew on these strobes can cause intermittent read errors. Keep strobe traces matched (within 1 cm if possible) and use a series damping resistor (22-33 ohm) at the driver end to reduce reflections on a long bus. Add a 5V-tolerant logic analyzer breakout at the bus to capture /BERR events during bring-up. Place terminating resistors only if the bus is long (>20 cm); otherwise rely on intrinsic CMOS drive strength.
