MCP3008-I/SL 概要

The Microchip Technology MCP3008-I/SL is a 10-bit successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter with 8 input channels and an SPI-compatible serial output, housed in a 16-pin narrow-body SOIC (SL) package rated for the industrial temperature range. It operates from a single 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply, draws only 5 nA typical standby current and approximately 320 µA at full conversion rate, and delivers up to 200 ksps throughput at 5 V VDD. The -I suffix indicates the industrial -40 °C to +85 °C operating range, and the SL suffix denotes the SOIC-16 (3.90 mm body) package.

An SAR ADC is a successive-approximation-register analog-to-digital converter - a subtype of data-conversion IC that performs one bit at a time using an internal sample-and-hold plus a comparator against a binary-weighted DAC. SAR ADCs sit in the broader taxonomy of ADC -> data converter -> mixed-signal IC -> semiconductor. Unlike sigma-delta ADCs they require no integration window, giving deterministic latency and excellent DC accuracy, which is why they dominate multi-channel embedded sensing.

Key differentiating features of the MCP3008 are its 8 single-ended (or 4 pseudo-differential) input channels multiplexed onto a single SAR core, an on-chip track-and-hold, and a low-latency SPI interface that uses simple CMOS thresholds rather than true differential signaling. The device accepts SPI clocks up to 3.6 MHz at 5 V and 2 MHz at 2.7 V, and consumes just 320 µA typical during continuous conversion. Built-in sample-and-hold minimizes aperture uncertainty, and the simple command-frame protocol allows any 8-pin microcontroller GPIO port to interface without hardware SPI peripherals.

Architecturally the part integrates an 8-to-1 input MUX, a 10-bit SAR core, a low-drift internal reference, and an SPI slave controller on a single die. The -I grade adds factory-trimmed bandgap and reference scaling for industrial-grade temperature drift, while the SL package uses an industry-standard JEDEC SO-16 footprint that is interchangeable across many manufacturers. Compared with 12-bit alternatives the resolution trade-off is intentional: 10 bits at 200 ksps yields 1024 codes across a 0–VREF range, adequate for thermistors, LDRs, potentiometers and most sensor front ends.

Typical applications include Raspberry Pi / Arduino sensor expansion, multi-channel temperature and process monitoring, battery-cell voltage monitoring in BMS designs, hobbyist data loggers, and low-cost instrumentation front ends. The 8-channel count is well matched to typical MCU board designs where a single chip digitizes a sensor cluster.

Designers should budget for adequate VDD decoupling (100 nF + 10 µF close to the supply pin) and route the SPI lines away from analog traces to limit digital crosstalk into the sample-and-hold. The internal reference (≈2.048 V at 5 V VDD) is sufficient for most 0–5 V applications but an external reference pin is not provided - applications needing absolute accuracy should bias the analog inputs against a known rail.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone, helping engineers evaluate the MCP3008-I/SL for new designs and second-source against cross-brand equivalents.

主な用途

MCP3008-I/SL の用途: 6 件s: Raspberry Pi / MCU Sensor Expansion Board, Multi-Channel Temperature / Process Monitoring, Battery Cell Voltage Monitoring (BMS Front End), Hobbyist Data Logger / Sensor Cluster, Audio-Level Metering / VU Front End, Low-Cost Instrumentation / Lab Equipment.

🧩

Raspberry Pi / MCU Sensor Expansion Board

The MCP3008-I/SL is the canonical 8-channel ADC companion for Raspberry Pi projects that lack an onboard analog-to-digital converter, exposing sensors like LDRs, thermistors, and potentiometers over SPI. Its 200 ksps throughput at 5 V VDD and 3.6 MHz SPI clock saturate easily over bit-banged Pi GPIO, but a hardware SPI overlay reliably delivers 50-100 ksps. The 8 single-ended inputs map cleanly to typical maker projects where four channels is one pin too few and the ADC is the lowest-cost way to add full sensor coverage.

🏭

Multi-Channel Temperature / Process Monitoring

Industrial process panels use the MCP3008-I/SL to digitize 8 thermocouple, RTD, or 4-20 mA loop signals via external signal conditioning, taking advantage of its -40 °C to +85 °C industrial temperature range and 10-bit resolution. Each channel returns codes 0-1023 against an internal 2.048 V reference, giving ≈2 mV LSB size at full scale - coarse for thermocouples alone but adequate for thermistor bias networks and 0-10 V process signals after scaling. The 5 nA standby current allows a single CS line to power-gate the chip between scans for battery-backed monitoring.

⚡

Battery Cell Voltage Monitoring (BMS Front End)

Multi-cell lithium battery packs use the MCP3008-I/SL to monitor up to 8 individual cell voltages via resistor dividers, with the SAR architecture giving deterministic single-shot conversion latency critical for cell-balancing control loops. The 320 µA active supply current and 5 nA standby allow low-duty-cycle scanning to minimize parasitic drain on the cells being measured. Designers should add per-channel RC filtering and clamp diodes to protect the 5.5 V absolute-maximum analog inputs from inductive transients during switching of the cell-balancing MOSFETs.

📱

Hobbyist Data Logger / Sensor Cluster

Portable data loggers benefit from the MCP3008-I/SL's small SOIC-16 footprint, 8 channels, and modest 320 µA active current when scanning sensor clusters such as accelerometers, photodiodes, soil-moisture probes, and gas-sensor analog outputs. The deterministic SAR conversion latency simplifies timestamping in SD-card logging firmware, and the SPI interface works from any MCU GPIO. With internal reference scaling at 2.048 V at 5 V VDD, typical 3.3 V sensor outputs land in the upper half of the ADC range without active amplification.

🎧

Audio-Level Metering / VU Front End

Audio applications use the MCP3008-I/SL to digitize rectified-and-filtered line or microphone signals for LED-bar VU metering, where 10-bit resolution is more than adequate to display 30-40 dB dynamic range. The 200 ksps sample rate allows comfortable 44.1 kHz audio-band sampling for waveform visualization without aliasing. Multiple MCP3008 channels can be stacked for stereo or multi-channel level metering; using pseudo-differential mode improves common-mode rejection of single-supply rail noise in the audio chain.

🔬

Low-Cost Instrumentation / Lab Equipment

University labs and small OEMs use the MCP3008-I/SL as the digitizer in low-cost bench instruments such as bench multimeters, semiconductor curve tracers, and physics-sensor readouts, where 10-bit resolution is acceptable for educational purposes and the SOIC-16 package is hand-solderable. The internal VREF allows one-chip designs without external reference components, and the SPI interface streams directly to a host PC over USB-UART bridges. The -40 °C to +85 °C industrial range covers typical lab and outdoor field environments without derating.

The MCP3008-I/SL delivers up to 200 ksps throughput at 5 V VDD and 75 ksps at 2.7 V VDD. According to the Microchip datasheet (DS21295D), the SPI clock limit is 3.6 MHz at 5 V and 2.0 MHz at 2.7 V. Real-world sustained sample rate on a Raspberry Pi or Arduino is typically 50-100 ksps because of GPIO-driven SPI overhead.
What is the difference between MCP3008-I/SL and MCP3008T-I/SL?
The MCP3008-I/SL is the industrial-temperature (-40 °C to +85 °C) part in 16-pin SOIC, while the MCP3008T-I/SL is the tape-and-reel packaging variant of the same industrial die. Both share identical 10-bit resolution, 8 channels, 200 ksps throughput, and SOIC-16 footprint - they are drop-in replacements differing only in shipping media, not electrical specifications.
What is the difference between MCP3008-I/SL and MCP3008-I/P?
The MCP3008-I/SL is the SOIC-16 surface-mount version, while the MCP3008-I/P is the same industrial-grade die in a through-hole PDIP-16 package. Both share the same 10-bit SAR architecture, 200 ksps throughput and SPI interface, but the SL variant uses a smaller JEDEC SO-16 footprint suited to reflow assembly, whereas the P variant fits breadboards and through-hole prototyping.
Where can I buy the MCP3008-I/SL online?

Is the MCP3008-I/SL the same as MCP3208?
The MCP3008 and MCP3208 share the same SOIC-16 footprint and SPI protocol but differ in resolution: the MCP3008 is 10-bit (1024 codes) and the MCP3208 is 12-bit (4096 codes, 100 ksps). Both have 8 single-ended channels and the same -40 °C to +85 °C industrial range. The MCP3208 is the upgrade path when 10-bit LSB size (≈2 mV at 2 V REF) is too coarse.
Can the MCP3208 replace the MCP3008-I/SL as a drop-in?
The MCP3208-CI/P (12-bit) shares the same SOIC-16 footprint and SPI command frame, making it a near drop-in upgrade. However, throughput drops from 200 ksps to 100 ksps at 5 V, and minimum SPI clock constraints differ slightly between the two. Verify timing against the datasheet before using MCP3208 in production as a 3008 substitute - same package, same pinout, but param_match is around 80 percent.
When should I choose MCP3008-I/SL over a 12-bit ADC?
Choose the MCP3008-I/SL when 10-bit resolution (1.024 percent of full scale, ≈2 mV per LSB at 2 V REF) is sufficient and you need 200 ksps throughput, low cost, and a broad second-source ecosystem. Choose a 12-bit ADC such as the MCP3208 when thermocouple, strain-gauge, or precision sensor measurements require 4× the code resolution. The 3008 also wins for power-sensitive designs at 320 µA active versus higher 12-bit alternatives.
Where do I download the MCP3008-I/SL datasheet PDF?
The official MCP3008-I/SL datasheet (DS21295D, Microchip Technology) is available as a free PDF at https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/21295d.pdf, mirrored at Microchip's product page for the MCP3008 (microchip.com/en-us/product/MCP3008), and on distributor pages such as DigiKey (319423) and Mouser (579-MCP3008-I/SL). The datasheet covers 34 pages including electrical characteristics, SPI timing diagrams, and typical application circuits.
Where can I find the MCP3008-I/SL pinout?
The MCP3008-I/SL pinout is documented in the Microchip datasheet DS21295D, page 1. In the 16-pin SOIC (SL) package: pin 1 is CH0, pin 2 is CH1, pin 3 is CH2, pin 4 is CH3, pin 5 is CH4, pin 6 is CH5, pin 7 is CH6, pin 8 is CH7, pin 9 is DGND, pin 10 is CS/SHDN, pin 11 is Din, pin 12 is Dout, pin 13 is CLK, pin 14 is AGND, pin 15 is VREF, and pin 16 is VDD.
What is a good drop-in replacement for the MCP3008-I/SL?
Direct drop-in replacements sharing the SOIC-16 footprint and SPI command frame include the Microchip MCP3208-CI/SL (12-bit upgrade, 100 ksps), the tape-and-reel variant MCP3008T-I/SL, and the AEC-Q100 automotive-grade MCP3008T-I/SLVAO. Cross-brand options such as the Texas Instruments ADS7950 exist in similar 8-channel SAR ADCs but differ in SPI protocol and are NOT drop-in without firmware changes.
What are the key specifications engineers should know about the MCP3008-I/SL?
The MCP3008-I/SL delivers 10-bit resolution, 8 single-ended input channels, 200 ksps throughput at 5 V, and 320 µA active supply current in a SOIC-16 industrial-grade package. 設計ノート

Estimated: At 5 V VDD with continuous 200 ksps sampling across 8 channels, the MCP3008 draws roughly 320 µA from VDD - negligible for most designs but worth budgeting in battery-powered logger applications. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic placed within 3 mm of pin 16 plus a bulk 10 µF tantalum at the regulator output. Tie AGND (pin 14) and DGND (pin 9) to a single ground star directly under the IC to avoid ground-loop noise coupling into the SAR comparator.

Keep analog input traces short and guarded with a ground trace on each side to limit digital crosstalk into the sample-and-hold. Route SPI traces (CS, Din, Dout, CLK) away from the analog inputs by at least 5 mm, and place the 100 nF VDD decoupling cap on the same layer as the IC. Estimated: per Microchip datasheet section 6.0, the analog input bandwidth exceeds 1 MHz, so any high-impedance trace longer than 25 mm should be treated as a transmission line if you sample above 50 ksps.

The MCP3008's sample-and-hold acquires the input in roughly 1.5 SPI-clock periods, so settle the analog source within 1.5 clock periods at your chosen SCLK for full 10-bit accuracy. With high-impedance sources (>10 kΩ) add an external 100 pF-1 nF buffer cap directly at the channel pin. Pseudo-differential mode (CHx vs CHx+1, GND=CH(x%2)) doubles effective common-mode rejection but reduces channel count from 8 to 4 - useful when the analog signals share a common DC bias.

Do not drive any analog input above VDD + 0.3 V or below AGND - 0.3 V - the absolute-maximum ratings in the datasheet allow only a small overdrive beyond the rails before latch-up. With 3.3 V sensors and a 5 V VDD supply, add a series 1 kΩ resistor at each input to limit fault current if the input is mis-wired. Do not float CS - leaving CS high puts the chip in shutdown (5 nA) but a noisy floating line can spuriously enable conversion.
