PIC16LF1455-E/SL 概要

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1455-E/SL is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC XLP 16F family, delivering 48 MHz core performance with 14 KB (8K x 14 words) of Flash program memory in a 14-pin SOIC (SL) package. According to distributor listings, the LF variant operates from 1.8 V to 3.6 V, targeting ultra-low-power applications with eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology, and includes a 1024-byte SRAM data store. The device integrates a full-speed USB 2.0 transceiver with on-chip pull-up resistors and a clock recovery circuit, eliminating the need for an external crystal for USB operation, alongside 12 I/O pins arranged for mixed analog and digital use.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer integrating a CPU, program memory (Flash), working memory (RAM), peripherals, and I/O lines. The 8-bit class optimizes for low cost, low power, and deterministic interrupt response over raw compute throughput, sitting in the taxonomy as: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. PIC16F1xxx devices use a 14-bit modified Harvard instruction set and feature the enhanced mid-range core, providing C-compiler-friendly architecture with linear memory access for higher code density than legacy baseline PIC cores.

Key features include a 48 MHz internal oscillator with 1% accuracy after USB tuning, a 5-bit DAC and 10-bit ADC with computation, multiple communication peripherals (I2C, SPI, EUSART), and two PWM modules with complementary outputs. The part is offered with 1 KByte SRAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM, and a 32 kHz LP oscillator for RTC mode. The nanoWatt XLP technology enables sleep currents down to sub-microampere levels, making it well-suited for battery-powered USB HID devices, wearable peripherals, and always-on sensor nodes.

The architecture uses a two-stage pipeline with hardware multiply support and a peripheral pin select (PPS) system that allows flexible remapping of digital peripherals to physical I/O pins. This reduces PCB layout constraints for compact USB dongles and embedded accessories. CIP (Core Independent Peripherals) such as the CWG, NCO, and PWM modules enable complex timing and waveform synthesis without CPU intervention, further reducing active-mode power.

Typical applications include USB Human Interface Devices (HID keyboards, mice, game controllers), USB-to-UART bridges, low-cost logic analyzers, consumer electronics remote controls, and portable medical sensors. The wide operating voltage range also supports coin-cell-powered designs such as wireless key fobs and BLE beacon firmware. The internal USB regulator and transceiver allow direct 5 V VBUS connection with proper external protection.

When designing with this part, ensure that the USB DP/DM traces are length-matched within 50 mils and routed over a continuous ground plane for impedance control. A 1 microfarad decoupling capacitor must be placed within 2 mm of VDD, and unused I/O pins must be configured as outputs low to minimize sleep current. Programming is supported via ICSP with the MPLAB X IDE and PICkit 3/4 tools.

設計ノート

Route the USB D+ and D- differential pair on the top layer with 90-ohm differential impedance, length-matched within 50 mils, and surrounded by a continuous ground plane for return current. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of the VDD pin (pin 1) and a 10 microfarad bulk capacitor near the USB VBUS input. The exposed thermal pad is not present on the 14-SOIC package; copper pour on all layers improves thermal dissipation but is not required for the LF1455's typical 50-100 mW operating power.

The PIC16LF1455's XLP nanoWatt sleep mode draws less than 1 microampere at 1.8 V, but the integrated USB transceiver adds up to 1.5 mA during active USB traffic. Estimate average power as P_avg = (I_sleep x t_sleep + I_active x t_active) x VDD; for a HID keyboard with 99% sleep duty, total average current stays below 50 microampere from a 3.0 V supply. Always configure unused I/O pins as outputs driving low before entering sleep to eliminate floating-input leakage paths that can add 1-2 microampere per pin.

Do not omit the MCLR pull-up resistor on pin 4 - the LF1455 will fail to start reliably without a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD and may enter programming mode if the line floats. Also, never apply VDD above 3.6 V to the LF variant; transients above 4.0 V will damage the internal USB regulator. For ICSP programming, ensure the PGD/PGC lines are isolated from application circuitry with series resistors to prevent contention during debug. The internal 48 MHz oscillator is factory-calibrated but may drift up to 2% over temperature; use the 32 kHz SOSC or external crystal if USB timing must hold tighter than +/-0.25%.
