PIC16LF19156-I/SP 概要

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF19156-I/SP is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller based on the PIC16 core, operating at up to 32 MHz with 28 KB (16K x 14) of Flash program memory, 2 KB of SRAM, and 256 bytes of data EEPROM, housed in a 28-pin SPDIP (through-hole) package. It targets ultra-low-power (XLP) battery applications with an integrated LCD driver, integrated charge pump, 12-bit ADC2 with computation, 5-bit DAC, low-power comparator, PWM, CCP, CWG, ZCD, and Peripheral Pin Select (PPS).

A microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated circuit that combines a CPU core, program memory, working RAM, and programmable peripherals in a single chip. The PIC16 family uses a Harvard RISC architecture with a 14-bit instruction word optimized for deterministic, byte-oriented embedded control. PIC MCUs occupy the 8-bit tier of the embedded hierarchy (8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor) and compete with 8051 derivatives and low-end Cortex-M0 devices, trading raw clock speed for low power, deterministic timing, and code density.

Key features include a wide 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply range optimized for single-cell Li-ion or 2x AA battery operation, eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology with sub-uA sleep currents, 24 GPIO-capable I/O pins, an integrated LCD driver with charge pump supporting glass up to 5.5 V, and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) that offload timing-critical tasks from the CPU. The 12-bit ADC2 with oversampling, the 5-bit DAC, and the zero-crossing detector are particularly useful for sensor signal conditioning and dimmable lighting.

The PIC16LF19156 uses a pipelined Harvard architecture with a hardware multiplier and a 32 kHz internal LF oscillator plus a 32 MHz HF oscillator selectable via the OSCCON register. The PPS module remaps digital peripherals to almost any I/O pin, simplifying PCB routing. The integrated LCD controller, charge pump, RTCC, and CIPs make the part a one-chip solution for battery-powered meters, thermostats, and wearable LCD products.

Typical applications include battery-powered LCD thermostats, smart energy meters with display, portable medical dosing pumps, IoT sensor nodes with LCD readout, white-goods user-interface panels, and electronic shelf labels. The 256 B EEPROM supports frequent-data-logging tasks such as meter calibration and tamper counters.

When designing with this device, keep the LF crystal or INTOSC selected during sleep to keep the RTCC running while the CPU is idle, and budget 6 mA per I/O when sourcing LEDs directly to avoid VDD droop. PPS mapping is one-time-per-pin, so reassigning the same peripheral to multiple pins requires later silicon revisions.

🏭

Battery-Powered LCD Thermostat

The PIC16LF19156-I/SP is well-suited for a battery-powered LCD thermostat because its integrated segmented LCD driver with on-chip charge pump can bias LCD glass up to 5.5 V directly from the 1.8-3.6 V battery rail, eliminating an external negative-voltage generator. The XLP nanoWatt sleep mode keeps idle current below 1 uA while the RTCC continues timekeeping, extending two-AA-cell life beyond three years. The 12-bit ADC2 with computation reads thermistor or RTD sensors with hardware oversampling, and the 24 GPIO pins drive both the LCD segments and the keypad matrix. Compared to a discrete MCU plus LCD driver, this part cuts BOM cost and PCB area by ~40 percent.

⚡

Smart Energy Meter with LCD

For smart electricity and water meters, the PIC16LF19156-I/SP provides 28 KB of Flash for metering firmware and tamper-detection state machines, while the 256-byte EEPROM reliably stores calibration constants and rolling demand logs through frequent writes. The integrated zero-crossing detector (ZCD) synchronizes ADC2 sampling with the AC line for accurate active-power measurement, and the CWG peripheral generates the switched-capacitor drive for the meter LCD segments. The LF-version's 1.8 V minimum supply supports single-cell Li-SOCl2 backup battery operation with up to 20-year shelf life. PPS lets the same PCB route multiple meter variants by remapping UART or I2C pins in firmware.

💊

Portable Medical Dosing Pump

The PIC16LF19156-I/SP targets portable medical dosing pumps where deterministic real-time response and ultra-low sleep current are critical. The PIC16 core's deterministic 8 MIPS throughput guarantees bounded interrupt latency for peristaltic-pump stepper control, while the 5-bit DAC drives a 4-20 mA loop or a piezo buzzer. The 12-bit ADC2 monitors battery voltage, flow sensors, and pressure transducers with hardware averaging that offloads the CPU. eXtreme Low-Power technology with the 32 kHz LF oscillator drops the system below 1.8 uA in standby, supporting 30-day battery life between charges. Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) let the pump run a touch sensor, RTC, and LCD without waking the CPU.

🧩

IoT Sensor Node with LCD Readout

The PIC16LF19156-I/SP is a strong fit for an IoT sensor node that needs a local alphanumeric display alongside wireless telemetry. The integrated LCD driver connects directly to a 4-mux 7-segment display, while the PPS-routed UART or SPI bus talks to a LoRa, NB-IoT, or sub-GHz transceiver without extra glue logic. The 24 GPIO can host a keypad, rotary encoder, and multiple analog sensors through the 12-bit ADC2 and the low-power comparator. The XLP sleep modes and the 32 kHz LF oscillator hold average current below 5 uA between transmissions, extending battery life in field-deployed sensors. Hardware AES via the CIP blocks is available in firmware libraries on this family.

🏭

White-Goods User Interface Panel

For washing-machine, dishwasher, and oven user-interface panels, the PIC16LF19156-I/SP combines the segmented LCD driver, capacitive touch sensing via the ADC2, and Core Independent Peripherals that handle button scanning and rotary encoder quadrature without CPU intervention. The 24 GPIO drive up to 8 multiplexed 7-segment digits plus 16 status LEDs, while PWM and CCP generate the buzzer tones and triac-fired heater control signals. PPS allows late-stage PCB changes to re-route keyboard and LED pins without re-spinning the board. The F-version (PIC16F19156) supports a 5 V supply from a rectified 3.3 V rail, useful when interfacing to legacy triac drivers.

📺

Electronic Shelf Label

The PIC16LF19156-I/SP is suitable for electronic shelf label (ESL) base stations or gateway controllers that coordinate wireless price updates and drive small segmented LCDs. eXtreme Low-Power sleep currents below 700 nA allow battery-powered ESL displays to last 5+ years, and the on-chip LCD charge pump drives 1/4-duty 3 V glass without external bias components. The 2 KB SRAM buffers update packets while the 256-byte EEPROM stores per-tag pricing templates that survive power cycles. The 32 MHz core services sub-GHz radio interrupts with deterministic latency, and PPS maps the SPI or UART radio interface to free pins for flexible RF front-end routing.

設計ノート

Decouple the PIC16LF19156-I/SP with a 100 nF ceramic bypass capacitor placed within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 19) and a bulk 10 uF ceramic or tantalum capacitor at the board power entry. The LF-version operates from 1.8 V to 3.6 V, so a low-ESR ceramic input cap is critical at the lower edge to handle the LCD charge-pump switching transients. Place a separate analog AVDD decoupling capacitor at pin 28 if the application uses ADC2 at high sample rates (above 100 ksps) to keep ADC noise below 1 LSB.

The PIC16LF19156-I/SP draws less than 8 mA active at 32 MHz and below 1.8 uA in XLP sleep, so thermal rise is negligible in typical SPDIP-28 designs (estimated theta_JA ~70 C/W in still air). However, in sealed outdoor enclosures with +60 C ambient, the device can exceed 80 C junction temperature at maximum active load. Estimated: with 8 mA at 3.6 V (28.8 mW) and theta_JA of 70 C/W, junction rise is ~2 C above ambient, which is well within the -40 C to +85 C industrial grade. For +125 C extended temperature parts (E-suffix), verify thermal headroom in direct sun exposure.

Do not leave the MCLR pin (pin 1, RA3) floating - even if not used as reset, configure RA3 as an input with the WPU weak-pullup enabled in firmware to prevent spurious resets from ESD or coupling. The PIC16LF19156 requires the internal 32 MHz HF oscillator to be tuned after VDD rises above 1.8 V; do not rely on the default OSCCON reset value of 32 kHz if the application needs immediate 8 MIPS performance. Also confirm the LF crystal or external clock is selected before switching to sleep mode, because the HF oscillator stops in sleep.

Route the ICSP/ICD pins (ICSPCLK=RA0, ICSPDAT=RA1, MCLR=VPP) to a 6-pin header or test pad group so that the device can be programmed and debugged in-circuit with MPLAB ICD 4 or PICkit 4. Keep analog traces (RA0-RA7, RBx analog-capable pins) short and guarded with a digital ground plane on the opposite layer to minimize ADC2 cross-talk. The LCD segment pins (SEG2-SEG4, SEG20-SEG22, etc.) can be placed under the LCD connector without length matching, but separate them from PWM-driven triac traces by at least 3 mm to avoid segment flicker.
