PIC16LF1933-E/ML 概要

The Microchip PIC16LF1933-E/ML is an 8-bit CMOS flash microcontroller from the PIC16F193X/LF193X family with 7KB (4K x 14) of flash program memory, 256 bytes of SRAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package with exposed thermal pad. It is rated for an extended operating temperature range of -40C to +125C and operates at up to 32 MHz internal clock from a 1.8V to 5.5V supply.

A PIC microcontroller (Programmable Interface Controller, or Peripheral Interface Controller) is a compact RISC-based microcontroller family built around Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, integrated peripherals, and on-chip non-volatile flash memory. Microcontrollers occupy the same hierarchical layer as DSPs and FPGAs in embedded signal-processing; the PIC16 family specifically targets ultra-low-cost general-purpose and battery-powered applications where deterministic interrupt response and minimal power draw dominate over raw CPU throughput. The PIC16LF1933 belongs to the nanoWatt XLP (eXtreme Low Power) sub-tier, which adds sleep currents down to the nanoamp range for energy harvesting or multi-year coin-cell deployments.

Key features of the PIC16LF1933 include an integrated LCD driver with charge pump supporting up to 96 segments, an 11-channel 10-bit ADC with acquisition time programmable down to a few microseconds, a 5-bit DAC, two comparators, three timers (Timer0/1/2), enhanced PWM/capture/compare modules, and a master synchronous/ asynchronous serial port (MSSP) for SPI and I2C. The device supports both internal 16 MHz and 32 MHz HFINTOSC oscillators with on-the-fly clock switching, allowing sleep currents below typical standby thresholds of competing MCUs.

Architecturally, the PIC16LF1933 uses a RISC core with a 14-bit instruction word and an 8-level hardware stack. The nanoWatt XLP technology combines four low-power modes (DOZE, IDLE, SLEEP and deep SLEEP with RTCC) with peripheral module disable to cut active current without sacrificing peripheral availability.

Typical applications include battery-powered human-machine interfaces with segment LCDs (e.g. thermostats, blood-pressure cuffs, weighing scales), sensor conditioning front-ends, remote keyless entry, low-end consumer white goods, and general-purpose 8-bit replacements of legacy PIC16F designs requiring nanoamp sleep current.

When designing with this MCU, ensure the QFN exposed pad is soldered to a continuous ground copper pour for thermal dissipation and electrical performance. The LCD charge pump requires external reservoir capacitors sized per the segment count, and unused I/O pins should be configured as outputs to minimize sink current.

PIC16LF1933-E/ML の用途: 6 件s: Battery-Powered Thermostat with Segment LCD, Wireless Sensor Node with Coin-Cell Battery, Blood-Pressure Monitor / Medical Home Device, Industrial Weighing Scale, Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Fob, Consumer White Goods Control Board.

💡

Battery-Powered Thermostat with Segment LCD

The PIC16LF1933-E/ML is ideal for a wall-mounted battery-powered thermostat because it integrates an LCD driver with charge pump supporting up to 96 segments, eliminating the need for an external HT1621 or similar segment-LCD controller. Its nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep current below 100 nA lets a 2x AA battery pack run for over five years while still waking the MCU every few hundred milliseconds to read a temperature sensor through the 10-bit ADC. The 32 MHz HFINTOSC provides enough MIPS for PID control loops on the PWM output driving a TRIAC or relay, and the integrated 5-bit DAC is convenient for trimming reference voltages. Recommended companion parts include the MCP9701 analog temperature sensor, a low-side NPN driver for the TRIAC, and the MCP1700 LDO for any 3.3 V analog sub-rail.

🧩

Wireless Sensor Node with Coin-Cell Battery

For a coin-cell-powered IoT sensor node the PIC16LF1933-E/ML delivers exactly the right mix of low active current and standby current for duty-cycled operation. Running the on-chip 16 MHz HFINTOSC, the active current is around 1.6 mA at 3 V, while deep-sleep with RTCC falls to roughly 500 nA; combined with a sub-1 GHz radio such as the MRF89XA or an SPI-attached LoRa module, this enables multi-year battery life. The 7 KB flash is sufficient for the MAC stack and the sensor-application code, while the 256-byte RAM handles a packet buffer with interrupt-driven SPI transfers through the MSSP peripheral. Watch for the LF voltage envelope at end-of-life on the coin cell (below 2.0 V) - this is the sweet spot where the LF variant outperforms the F variant.

💊

Blood-Pressure Monitor / Medical Home Device

In a home blood-pressure monitor the PIC16LF1933-E/ML serves as the central control MCU, driving the pump motor via PWM, sampling cuff pressure through the 10-bit ADC, and showing systolic/diastolic readings on a segment LCD. The integrated LCD driver with charge pump avoids the extra cost of a dedicated LCD controller, which is critical for consumer-medical pricing. The on-chip EEPROM provides reliable storage for user profiles, last readings, and calibration constants, with endurance rated by the manufacturer in the datasheet. The 32 MHz performance is sufficient for cuff-pressure waveform filtering and the simple inflation-control algorithm in real time without a DSP. The extended -40 C to +125 C temperature grade also supports medical-grade environmental testing.

🏭

Industrial Weighing Scale

An industrial weighing scale needs a stable 24-bit ADC front end, a display, and enough MCU throughput for digital filtering - all of which the PIC16LF1933-E/ML can coordinate. The 10-bit on-chip ADC is suitable for the tare/calibration channels, while the MSSP peripheral drives an external 24-bit sigma-delta ADC such as the MCP3551 for the load-cell readout. The segment-LCD driver shows weight, unit, and status icons, while the EEPROM stores calibration constants that survive power cycles. The extended -40 C to +125 C operating range handles factory-floor temperature swings, and the nanoWalt XLP sleep mode keeps battery backup for clock and last-value retention during power loss.

🚗

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Fob

For a remote keyless entry fob, the PIC16LF1933-E/ML keeps total BOM cost and quiescent current low while leaving the 7 KB flash budget for encryption-friendly rolling-code algorithms and the 256-byte EEPROM for storing the device secret. Driving the UHF transmitter through a single GPIO and using the internal HFINTOSC for the protocol timer eliminates the external crystal in cost-sensitive designs. The nanoWatt XLP sleep current under 100 nA means a CR2032 coin cell can power the fob for several years in standby, waking only on a button interrupt to transmit. The PIC16LF1933 also supports the automotive-grade PIC16F1933T-I/ML sibling for OEM designs that require AEC-Q100 compliance.

🏭

Consumer White Goods Control Board

In a low-end washing machine, dishwasher, or microwave oven user interface, the PIC16LF1933-E/ML replaces a larger 16-bit MCU by combining the segment-LCD driver, capacitive or mechanical button matrix, relay/triac drive PWMs, and serial EEPROM emulation in a single 28-QFN. The 7 KB flash is enough for the menu logic, the 256-byte EEPROM stores user presets, and the extended -40 C to +125 C grade handles the appliance thermal environment. Designers can use the internal 32 MHz oscillator to drive the main loop and switch to the LFINTOSC during display-only idle states to save power. The exposed thermal pad on the 28-QFN keeps the junction temperature comfortable even inside a sealed appliance enclosure.

Hotenda also lists it as in stock with competitive distributor pricing. For high-volume production schedules it is advisable to cross-check live stock at the moment of PO release.
What is the difference between PIC16LF1933 and PIC16F1933?
The PIC16LF1933 is the low-voltage F-variant designed to operate from 1.8 V to 5.5 V across the full 32 MHz speed, while the PIC16F1933 is the standard variant with the same peripherals but characterized for 1.8 V-3.6 V at lower speeds and 2.3 V-5.5 V at full speed. The 'LF' designation is purely a voltage/speed envelope marker; both parts share the same 28-QFN pinout and register set, so they are drop-in interchangeable when the supply rail is inside the LF envelope.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the PIC16LF1933-E/ML?
The closest drop-in replacements are other members of the PIC16F193X/LF193X family in the same 28-QFN (ML) footprint, namely the PIC16LF1933-I/ML (industrial temperature grade), the PIC16F1933-E/ML (F-variant, 2.3V-5.5V full-speed envelope), and the PIC16LF1934-E/ML (same family with more I/O). All four share pin 1 location, peripheral mapping, and programming/debug interface so firmware can be reused without PCB rework.
Can the PIC16F1933-I/ML replace the PIC16LF1933-E/ML?
Yes, with one caveat. The PIC16F1933-I/ML (industrial -40 C to +85 C) shares the same 28-QFN pinout and register map, but its full-speed operating envelope starts at 2.3 V rather than 1.8 V. If your design runs below 2.3 V (for example on a single coin cell), the LF variant is mandatory; if the rail stays at 2.3 V or above, the F variant is a true drop-in upgrade with the same nanoWatt XLP peripherals.
PIC16LF1933 vs PIC16F1825 - which is better for battery applications?
For battery applications requiring a segment-LCD interface, the PIC16LF1933 is the better fit because it integrates an LCD driver with charge pump supporting up to 96 segments, eliminating the external LCD bias circuitry. The PIC16F1825 lacks an integrated LCD driver but adds mTouch capacitive-sensing hardware; if your UI is capacitive touch, choose the PIC16F1825; if it is segment LCD, choose the PIC16LF1933.
When should I choose the PIC16LF1933 over the PIC16F1933?
Choose the PIC16LF1933-E/ML when your design runs from a sub-2.3 V rail (single Li coin cell, energy harvester, or 2x AA below depletion) and needs the full 32 MHz speed at that low voltage. Choose the PIC16F1933-E/ML when the supply stays at 2.3 V or higher; the F variant is essentially the same silicon at the same price but characterized for the higher voltage envelope, so LF is preferred for true low-voltage designs.
Where can I download the PIC16LF1933-E/ML datasheet PDF?
The official Microchip datasheet for the PIC16LF1933 family (Document Number 40001775) is hosted at microchip.com/downloads/aemDocuments/documents/MCU08/ProductDocuments/DataSheets/40001775E.pdf. Distributor-hosted copies are also available on DigChip, AllDatasheet, and Mouser's product page; the manufacturer PDF is the authoritative source for pinout, electrical characteristics, and programming specifications.
What is the pinout of the PIC16LF1933-E/ML in the 28-QFN package?
The 28-QFN (ML) package follows Microchip's standard PIC16F193X pinout: pin 1 is RA0, pin 2 is RA1, continuing counter-clockwise around the package through RB7 (pin 28), with the exposed pad on the underside serving as the primary thermal and electrical ground. The detailed pin-by-pin function map including comparator, ADC, and LCD segment assignments is shown on page 1 of the manufacturer datasheet, with full descriptions in the device overview section.
Does the PIC16LF1933-E/ML support C language development?
Yes. Microchip provides the MPLAB X IDE with the free XC8 C compiler, which targets the PIC16LF1933 family and supports inline assembly, bit manipulation, and the full peripheral library (PLIB). The PIC16LF1933 also works with the legacy HI-TECH C compiler and the open-source SDCC toolchain; programming and debugging are handled through MPLAB ICD 4 or PICkit 4 in-circuit debuggers.
What is the low-power sleep current of the PIC16LF1933?
Per the manufacturer datasheet, the PIC16LF1933 in deep-sleep mode with the Watchdog Timer disabled draws typical sleep currents in the nanoamp range, which is the defining feature of the nanoWalt XLP technology family. With the Real-Time Clock and Calendar (RTCC) running from a 32 kHz crystal, typical deep-sleep current is around 500 nA; without RTCC the part can drop below 100 nA, enabling multi-year battery life on a coin cell.
Is the PIC16LF1933-E/ML AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive use?
No. The PIC16LF1933-E/ML is the extended-temperature (-40 C to +125 C) commercial/industrial variant. For AEC-Q100 qualified automotive applications, Microchip offers PIC16F1933-E/ML automotive-grade siblings and the dedicated PIC16F1933T-I/ML automotive part numbers with PPAP documentation; verify the exact automotive suffix with the Microchip Automotive Product Selector before designing in.

主な差別化要因

  • Integrated LCD driver with charge pump in 28-QFN (vs PIC16F1829-I/ML)
  • nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep current below 100 nA (vs PIC16F1933-E/ML)
  • 1.8 V full-speed operating envelope (vs PIC16F1933-E/ML)

設計ノート

The 28-QFN (ML) package has an exposed thermal pad on the underside that doubles as the primary electrical ground. Per the manufacturer datasheet, this pad must be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour with at least 8 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch) to the inner ground plane to meet the published thermal resistance and to suppress ground bounce on the ADC and LCD charge-pump outputs. Missing or partial soldering of the e-pad is the single most common board-level failure mode for QFN PIC parts.

Estimated: with VDD = 3.3 V, VOUT_LCD_BIAS via internal charge pump, and CPU at 32 MHz active, the PIC16LF1933-E/ML draws approximately 2-3 mA active and below 100 nA in deep sleep with RTCC. To leverage the nanoWalt XLP features, switch to the LFINTOSC (31 kHz) or turn off unneeded peripherals before entering Sleep; the on-chip Peripheral Module Disable (PMD) registers are the documented mechanism for cutting active current without losing peripheral state.

Do not leave the MCLR/RE3 pin floating - if not used for reset, tie it through a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD to prevent spurious resets from EMI. Also, configure all unused I/O pins as outputs driving low (or high) before entering Sleep to avoid shoot-through currents on the input buffer; this is documented in section 4 of the manufacturer datasheet. Finally, the LCD charge-pump requires three external reservoir capacitors on VLCD1/VLCD2/VLCD3 even when the LCD module is disabled - leaving them off can cause the internal regulator to fail to start.
