SFP-10G-ZR-ST 概要

The StarTech.com SFP-10G-ZR-ST is a Cisco SFP-10G-ZR compatible fiber transceiver module that delivers 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over single-mode fiber (SMF) for 10GBASE-ZR compliant networks, with a maximum reach of up to 80 km (49.7 mi). It operates at the 1550 nm wavelength using a duplex LC connector interface, and is hot-pluggable into any standard SFP+ MSA cage. According to the StarTech.com product page, it has been designed, programmed, and tested to work with Cisco brand switches and routers including the ASR9000, ASR1000, NCS5500, C3850, and C9500 platforms.

An SFP+ (Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus) transceiver is a compact, hot-swappable optical module used in networking equipment to convert between electrical signals on the host board and optical signals on the fiber plant. SFP+ modules are an evolution of the 1G SFP form factor that retain the same physical cage size while supporting 10GbE, 10G Fibre Channel, and OTU2/OTU2e line rates. The 10GBASE-ZR IEEE 802.3ae variant specifies 80 km reach over SMF (G.652), placing it in the long-haul category alongside 10GBASE-ER (40 km) and 10GBASE-LR (10 km).

Key features include a maximum data transfer rate of 10 Gbps, Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) support that exposes Tx bias current, Tx optical power, Rx optical power, temperature, and supply voltage over the standard 2-wire management interface, and a single +3.3 V power supply rail typical of all SFP+ designs. The LC duplex optical interface is the industry-standard connector for SMF transceivers in this class. The module is programmed with Cisco-compatible DOM/DDM registers so it enumerates correctly on Cisco IOS-XE and IOS-XR without producing the well-known %SFF-2-1 unsupported SFP errors.

The transceiver uses an EML (electro-absorption modulated laser) TOSA plus APD (avalanche photodiode) receiver architecture - the standard combination for 80 km ZR-class optics. The cooled EML enables narrow-linewidth 1550 nm emission needed to stay within the chromatic-dispersion budget of the 80 km SMF span, while the APD provides the sensitivity required to detect the corresponding low incident optical power. The host-side electrical interface complies with the SFP+ MSA including the SFF-8431 limiting/modulating driver and SFF-8472 DDM memory map.

Typical applications include 10GbE links between data centers, ISP uplinks to customers over dark fiber, enterprise campus backbones, and OTU2/OTU2e transport in metro aggregation rings. Third-party ZR optics are widely deployed in service-provider and enterprise networks to avoid Cisco OEM pricing on the equivalent SFP-10G-ZR, which is documented in industry sources as exceeding $2,000 per unit.

When deploying the SFP-10G-ZR-ST, validate the optical power budget against the actual span loss and keep Tx/Rx levels within the module's published min/max windows - ZR optics have tighter power margins than LR or ER and can saturate the APD if used on short links without an inline attenuator.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical deployment notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

主な用途

SFP-10G-ZR-ST の用途: 6 件s: Data Center Interconnect (DCI) over Dark Fiber, ISP Uplink to Enterprise Customer over SMF, Enterprise Campus Backbone Aggregation, OTU2/OTU2e Metro Aggregation Transport, Redundant / Hot-Spare Optical Inventory, Long-Haul Edge-to-Core Routing Links.

🖥️

Data Center Interconnect (DCI) over Dark Fiber

The SFP-10G-ZR-ST provides 80 km reach over single-mode fiber at 1550 nm, making it the right 10GbE optical class for connecting two data centers over leased dark fiber. Its cooled EML TOSA maintains the tight linewidth and high extinction ratio needed to stay within the chromatic-dispersion budget of an 80 km span, while the APD receiver delivers the sensitivity required to detect low incident power at the far end. Cisco-compatible coding allows the module to enumerate on ASR9000, NCS5500, and C9500 platforms without producing unsupported-SFP syslog entries, simplifying multi-vendor DCI rollouts. Consider adding an inline optical attenuator when the actual span is well under 80 km to avoid APD saturation - the high receiver sensitivity that makes ZR successful on long links can become a liability on short ones.

🌐

ISP Uplink to Enterprise Customer over SMF

ISPs and WISPs routinely use the SFP-10G-ZR-ST to deliver 10 Gbps symmetrical Ethernet to enterprise customers located 20-80 km from the provider's point of presence. The 1550 nm optics ride on standard G.652 SMF already deployed in metro aggregation rings, so no fiber plant upgrade is required. DDM/DOM support exposes Tx bias, Tx/Rx optical power, temperature, and supply voltage, which lets the ISP's NMS monitor per-link health and detect fiber degradation before customer-visible outages occur. For IP/MPLS handoff at the customer edge, the SFP-10G-ZR-ST plugs into any SFP+ capable NID or router and presents a clean 10GbE handoff. StarTech.com's lifetime warranty and Cisco-compatible coding make it suitable for both greenfield deployments and as a lower-cost replacement for failed OEM ZR optics already in the field.

🏭

Enterprise Campus Backbone Aggregation

Large enterprise campuses with multiple buildings served by a private SMF ring can use the SFP-10G-ZR-ST in distribution-layer switches to aggregate 10 Gbps uplinks to a centralized core. The 1550 nm optics are immune to the modal bandwidth limits that constrain OM3/OM4 multimode fiber, so the same module class works across campus rings regardless of run length up to 80 km. Cisco-compatible coding simplifies deployment on existing Catalyst 9500, 3850, ASR1000, and NCS5500 equipment without triggering unsupported-SFP errors. For new campus builds, LR (10 km) is usually sufficient and cheaper; ZR becomes the right choice when the campus ring exceeds 10 km or when the IT team wants one SKU that scales between buildings and remote data centers.

📺

OTU2/OTU2e Metro Aggregation Transport

The 1550 nm cooled EML inside the SFP-10G-ZR-ST meets the spectral and dispersion requirements for OTU2 (10.709 Gbit/s) and OTU2e (11.095 Gbit/s) transport, which is the same operating envelope as the Cisco OEM SFP-10G-ZR. Service providers and large enterprises with OTN muxponder platforms can therefore populate SFP+ ports with the SFP-10G-ZR-ST instead of paying the Cisco OEM premium for OTU2-rated optics, as long as the host platform's OTU2 mode does not reject non-OEM serial IDs. The same DDM telemetry that supports 10GbE also drives OTN performance monitoring, so OTN operators get Tx power, Rx power, and laser bias trends across the optical section layer. Validate OTU2 framing support with the specific muxponder vendor before deployment.

🔧

Redundant / Hot-Spare Optical Inventory

Because the SFP-10G-ZR-ST carries the same SFP+ MSA cage and Cisco-compatible coding as the OEM SFP-10G-ZR, it is frequently held as a hot spare or pre-staged for rapid replacement on Cisco ASR9000, ASR1000, NCS5500, C3850, and C9500 ports. Network operations teams standardize on one SKU that works across all of these platforms, reducing the spare-parts SKU count and shortening mean time to repair on remote PoPs. The lower unit cost versus Cisco OEM also lets operators carry multiple spares without exceeding the optical parts budget. Always clean the LC endface before installing a spare, and verify DDM pages enumerate correctly with show interface transceiver after insertion.

📡

Long-Haul Edge-to-Core Routing Links

Edge routers aggregating LTE/5G backhaul or DSLAM uplinks can use the SFP-10G-ZR-ST to terminate 10 Gbps rings on Cisco ASR1000 and ASR9000 line cards installed in remote central offices located up to 80 km from the regional core. The 10GBASE-ZR 1550 nm optics ride on installed G.652 SMF between COs without requiring additional amplification for spans within the 80 km budget. Cisco-compatible coding makes the module recognized correctly on IOS-XE and IOS-XR without manual configuration workarounds. For COs less than 10 km from the core, the lower-cost SFP-10G-LR or SFP-10G-LR-ST is the better economics; use ZR only when the link spans justify the longer reach.

What is the maximum reach of the SFP-10G-ZR-ST?
The SFP-10G-ZR-ST supports link distances of up to 80 km (49.7 mi) over standard single-mode fiber (SMF, G.652), according to the StarTech.com datasheet. It operates at 1550 nm and is fully 10GBASE-ZR compliant. For shorter spans such as 40 km or 10 km, a 10GBASE-ER or 10GBASE-LR module is typically more cost-efficient because ZR optics carry a tighter optical budget that can saturate an APD on very short links without an inline attenuator.
Is the SFP-10G-ZR-ST compatible with Cisco switches?
Yes - the SFP-10G-ZR-ST is a Cisco SFP-10G-ZR compatible SFP+ module that StarTech.com has designed, programmed, and tested to work with Cisco brand switches and routers including ASR9000, ASR1000, NCS5500, C3850, and C9500. The DOM/DDM registers are coded to Cisco-style identifiers so the module enumerates correctly on IOS-XE and IOS-XR hosts, avoiding the %SFF-2-1 unsupported SFP syslog messages that appear when non-coded modules are inserted.
What fiber type and connector does the SFP-10G-ZR-ST use?
The SFP-10G-ZR-ST uses single-mode fiber (SMF) terminated with a duplex LC UPC connector, operating at 1550 nm. SMF is required because multimode fiber (OM3/OM4) cannot reach the 80 km target at this wavelength and data rate. Always inspect and clean both LC endfaces before insertion - ZR-class optics are particularly sensitive to reflectance from contaminated connectors, which can push the receiver into APD saturation or generate CRC errors.
What is the difference between SFP-10G-ZR and SFP-10G-ER?
The SFP-10G-ZR (and its third-party equivalent SFP-10G-ZR-ST) is rated for 80 km reach over SMF, while the SFP-10G-ER is rated for only 40 km. Both operate at 1550 nm. ZR modules use a cooled EML TOSA for tighter linewidth and tighter dispersion control, and are more expensive. Use ER for 40 km or shorter to reduce cost; use ZR when you need the full 80 km budget or want dispersion headroom for non-standard fibers.
Where can I buy the SFP-10G-ZR-ST online?
The SFP-10G-ZR-ST is in stock at StarTech.com (direct) and at major authorized distributors listed on Mouser and RS-Online, with typical single-unit pricing around the $199 mark as of 2026-10-20. Multi-pack pricing is available at qty 10, 100, 250, and 500 in the price tier table. For best warranty support, purchase from StarTech.com or its authorized distributor channel rather than gray-market resellers.
Does the SFP-10G-ZR-ST support Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM)?
Yes - the SFP-10G-ZR-ST supports DDM (also called DOM) over the standard 2-wire management interface, exposing Tx bias current, Tx optical power, Rx optical power, module temperature, and supply voltage per SFF-8472. The Cisco-compatible coding ensures these DDM pages appear correctly in IOS-XE show interface transceiver diagnostics, enabling real-time link health monitoring on supported platforms.
How much does the Cisco OEM SFP-10G-ZR cost compared to the SFP-10G-ZR-ST?
Industry sources report Cisco OEM SFP-10G-ZR prices above $2,000 per unit, while the MSA-compliant third-party equivalent SFP-10G-ZR-ST and similar compatibles range from roughly $80 to $200 depending on warranty tier. As of 2026-10-20, the SFP-10G-ZR-ST is sold in the $155-200 band depending on quantity. Both deliver the same 10GBASE-ZR 80 km optical performance over SMF; the price gap reflects OEM coding, branded warranty, and Cisco TAC support rather than different laser hardware.
What is the lead time for SFP-10G-ZR-ST?
StarTech.com and its major distributors typically list the SFP-10G-ZR-ST as a stocked SKU with same-day shipping when ordered before distributor cut-off on a business day. As of 2026-10-20, Mouser and RS-Online list it as available from inventory. For orders of 500+ units, request a formal quote to confirm factory-direct lead time, which can extend to 2-4 weeks during component shortages affecting 1550 nm EML TOSAs.
Where do I download the SFP-10G-ZR-ST datasheet PDF?
The official StarTech.com datasheet for SFP-10G-ZR-ST is hosted at https://media.startech.com/cms/pdfs/sfp-10g-zr-st_datasheet.pdf - the same PDF is mirrored on Mouser at https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/3/6177/1/sfp_10g_zr_st_datasheet.pdf. The datasheet confirms the 80 km reach, 1550 nm wavelength, SMF/LC interface, Cisco platform compatibility, and DDM support. Always download the latest revision directly from StarTech.com for warranty and compliance documentation.
Can I use the SFP-10G-ZR-ST on a short link without an attenuator?
No. The SFP-10G-ZR-ST uses an APD receiver optimized for detecting low signal levels at long distance; on short links the received optical power can easily exceed the APD saturation limit and produce CRC errors or damage the photodiode. For links under roughly 10 km, choose a 10GBASE-LR module, or install a 5-10 dB inline attenuator between the fiber patch panel and the module's Rx port to bring the received power back into the linear range.
Is the SFP-10G-ZR-ST pin-compatible with Cisco SFP-10G-ZR?
Pin-compatibility for SFP+ transceivers is defined by the SFP+ MSA (SFF-8431 electrical and SFF-8472 management). The SFP-10G-ZR-ST implements this MSA in the same cage and board-edge connector as Cisco SFP-10G-ZR, making it a true drop-in replacement at the electrical level. It also carries the Cisco-compatible serial ID coding that allows it to enumerate on Cisco hosts without raising unsupported-SFP errors.
SFP-10G-ZR-ST vs SFP-10G-ZR - which is better for an enterprise uplink?
Both deliver identical 10GBASE-ZR 80 km optical performance over SMF at 1550 nm and both fit the same SFP+ cage. The difference is commercial: the Cisco OEM SFP-10G-ZR includes Cisco TAC support and is priced above $2,000; the SFP-10G-ZR-ST delivers the same optical link for roughly $155-200 and is backed by StarTech.com lifetime warranty. For enterprise uplinks where Cisco TAC involvement is not contractually required, the SFP-10G-ZR-ST offers a 10x cost reduction.
When should I choose SFP-10G-ZR-ST over an LR or ER module?
Choose the SFP-10G-ZR-ST when the fiber span exceeds 40 km or when you want extra dispersion margin on a long-haul link. Choose a 10GBASE-LR module for runs of 2-10 km (lower cost, lower power, no APD saturation concerns). Choose a 10GBASE-ER module for 10-40 km spans. ZR optics are the wrong tool for sub-10 km links because the APD receiver saturates - always match the optics class to the actual link distance rather than buying the longest reach by default.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the SFP-10G-ZR-ST?
The best drop-in replacements for the SFP-10G-ZR-ST are other MSA-compliant 10GBASE-ZR 80 km SFP+ modules in the same LC-duplex SMF form factor - for example the third-party SFP-10G-ZR-S-ST (same StarTech.com family with serial-number Cisco coding), or the Carritech CT-SFP+ZR equivalent. All of these share the SFP+ MSA cage, 1550 nm wavelength, and 80 km SMF reach, so they are interchangeable on a per-port basis without board rework.
What is the wavelength of the SFP-10G-ZR-ST, and does it support OTU2?
The SFP-10G-ZR-ST operates at 1550 nm, the wavelength family used by 10GBASE-ZR, 10GBASE-ZW, OTU2, and OTU2e transport. While StarTech.com markets the module primarily for 10GbE, the underlying optics class matches the multirate OTU2/OTU2e specification published in the Cisco SFP-10G-ZR datasheet, meaning many third-party ZR optics are also used in OTN muxponder applications at 10.709 Gbit/s or 11.095 Gbit/s. Verify the host platform's OTU2 support before deploying in an OTN environment.

選定ガイド

Choose the SFP-10G-ZR-ST when you need 10GBASE-ZR 80 km reach over single-mode fiber in a Cisco-switched environment and you want a third-party price point. It is the right pick for data-center interconnect over dark fiber, ISP uplinks to enterprise customers, and long-haul edge-to-core routing links where the Cisco OEM SFP-10G-ZR is functionally equivalent but priced 10x higher. Choose the OEM SFP-10G-ZR when Cisco TAC support and OEM warranty are contractually required. Choose SFP-10G-ER for 10-40 km spans (lower cost than ZR, identical SFP+ cage and 1550 nm). Choose SFP-10G-LR (or SFP-10G-LR-ST) for spans under 10 km - the ZR APD will saturate on short links without an attenuator, so LR is the safer and cheaper match.

設計ノート

Estimated: on fiber spans well under roughly 10 km, the SFP-10G-ZR-ST's APD receiver can saturate because the incident optical power exceeds the linear range. Insert a 5-10 dB inline optical attenuator between the patch panel and the Rx port, or replace the module with a 10GBASE-LR SFP+ on short links. Always check DDM Rx power after deployment - values above the published Rx_max spec indicate saturation risk and should be attenuated. ZR optics are designed for long spans; using them on short links is the most common ZR deployment mistake.

The SFP+ MSA cage and board-edge connector are not board-level design concerns for the user - they live in the host switch or router PCB. What matters at deployment time is the host SFP+ slot quality: bent cage EMI fingers, contaminated host-side electrical contacts, and insufficient insertion depth all cause link flaps or DOM read errors. Before suspecting the optics, reseat the module, clean the host cage with an SFP-compatible contact cleaner, and re-verify with show interface transceiver. Maintain ESD precautions - SFP+ modules are sensitive to discharge during handling even when the cage is shut.

Estimated: 80 km at 10 Gbps over SMF at 1550 nm is at the edge of the 10GBASE-ZR dispersion budget. The SFP-10G-ZR-ST's cooled EML TOSA produces a narrow linewidth to keep chromatic dispersion within spec, but you still need to budget for the actual installed fiber. Calculate link loss = (fiber attenuation × km) + (connector/splice loss × count) + (margin). Confirm Tx power minus total loss puts Rx power inside the module's min/max window. If you are within 1-2 dB of either limit, the link will be unstable; consider OTDR-tracing the fiber before commissioning the ZR link to identify hidden splice losses or macrobends.

SFP+ modules dissipate roughly 1-1.5 W under typical ZR operation. Host switches with high port density and limited airflow can push the cage inlet temperature beyond the operating range, accelerating laser aging and bias drift. Verify the host chassis has the required airflow and that intake temperature at the SFP+ cage stays within the 0-70 C commercial range. Forced-air cooling (front-to-back or side-to-side) consistent with the host platform's ASR9000/C9500/C3850 design rules is mandatory; do not block SFP+ cage vents with cable management hardware.
