PIC18LF25K83-E/ML 개요

The Microchip Technology PIC18LF25K83-E/ML is a low-power, high-performance 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller featuring 32KB Flash program memory, 2KB SRAM, and 1KB EEPROM, integrated CAN 2.0B peripheral, and a 12-bit ADC with Computation (ADC2) for advanced touch sensing and signal conditioning. Housed in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package, this device runs at up to 64 MHz and targets space-constrained automotive, industrial, and consumer applications requiring robust wired communication.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash), volatile data memory (RAM), EEPROM, and multiple peripherals. The PIC18 family belongs to the broader PIC microcontroller hierarchy from Microchip, sitting between baseline PIC10/12/16 devices and the 16-bit PIC24/dsPIC families. The PIC18LF25K83 specifically occupies the XLP (eXtreme Low Power) "LF" tier, optimized for battery-powered and energy-harvesting designs where deep sleep current is critical.

Key features of the PIC18LF25K83-E/ML include a 12-bit ADC2 with Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) support for noise-immune touch sensing, hardware CAN 2.0B module, two I2C, two SPI, two UART with LIN/DMX/DALI support, and 25-channel 10-bit PWM. The device also integrates a 5-bit DAC, comparators, zero-cross detect, and hardware math accelerator for ADC filtering. The extended temperature -40C to +125C range and AEC-Q100 qualification suitability make this part attractive for automotive body and chassis ECUs.

The PIC18LF25K83-E/ML uses a modified Harvard architecture with separate program and data bus paths, achieving single-cycle instruction execution at 64 MHz (15.6 ns instruction cycle). The 32KB self-programmable Flash supports in-application programming via IAP, enabling field firmware updates without external bootloader. A peripheral pin select (PPS) remapping block allows flexible assignment of digital peripherals to physical I/O pins, simplifying PCB layout when adding new functions late in design.

Typical applications include CAN node endpoints in automotive body controllers, HVAC and lighting control, industrial sensor hubs with LIN or CAN connectivity, building automation DALI lighting nodes, capacitive touch user interfaces, and battery-powered IoT sensor transmitters. The wide operating voltage range (1.8V to 3.6V for the LF variant) and 9 nA sleep current (RTC mode) extend battery life in remote installations.

When designing with this part, allocate sufficient Flash for the application stack plus a robust bootloader (typically 4-8KB) and ensure PPS conflicts are resolved at compile time. Designers migrating from the PIC18F25K83 should note the LF suffix indicates 1.8V-3.6V operation versus the F variant's 2.3V-5.5V range - substitute carefully when migrating.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing for the PIC18LF25K83-E/ML, same-family and cross-brand 28-pin QFN drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

🚗

Automotive CAN Body Control Module

The PIC18LF25K83-E/ML's integrated CAN 2.0B controller, 32KB Flash, and -40C to +125C extended temperature grade make it ideal for automotive body domain nodes such as seat controllers, mirror modules, and lighting ECUs. Designers place the part between the 12V battery and a 5V LDO such as the MCP1790 to provide a 3.3V regulated rail for the MCU; an external CAN transceiver like the MCP2551 or ATA6560 handles the physical layer. The 12-bit ADC2 with CVD supports capacitive touch buttons on door handles without extra ICs.

🏭

Industrial CANopen Sensor Hub

For industrial sensor hubs communicating over CANopen or DeviceNet, the PIC18LF25K83-E/ML's hardware CAN 2.0B controller offloads protocol handling from the CPU, freeing 64 MHz cycles for sensor fusion and ADC2 filtering. The 24-channel 12-bit ADC2 supports multiple analog sensor inputs simultaneously, and the 25 I/O pins handle digital sensors, status LEDs, and configuration switches. Designers typically use the device with a 3.3V LDO and an isolated CAN transceiver such as the ADM3053 for factory-floor noise immunity.

💡

DALI Lighting Control Node

The PIC18LF25K83-E/ML's UART with DALI protocol support enables direct connection to a DALI bus via an optocoupler and small signal transistor, eliminating a dedicated DALI controller IC. With 32KB Flash, designers implement the full DALI-2 application controller stack plus lighting fade algorithms and persistence in 1KB EEPROM. The 9 nA deep-sleep current allows battery-backed DALI emergency nodes to maintain communication during power loss for years.

🧩

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The PIC18LF25K83-E/ML's 12-bit ADC2 with Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) hardware automates touch-sensing scanning, averaging, oversampling, and threshold detection without CPU intervention. This allows up to 24 touch buttons or a touch slider with mTouch firmware alone, no external touch controller required. The wide 1.8-3.6 V supply range supports both 3.3V and 2x AA battery-powered appliances. PPS flexibility simplifies routing when adding touch sliders late in design.

📱

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Transmitter

For battery-powered IoT sensor nodes reporting over CAN or UART, the PIC18LF25K83-E/ML's 9 nA deep-sleep current extends coin-cell or 2x AA battery life to multi-year runtime. The LF variant's 1.8V minimum operation allows direct connection to nearly depleted 2x AA cells, while the integrated ADC2 and 5-bit DAC support precision sensor measurements and analog output. Designers pair the MCU with a sub-GHz radio module over SPI for wireless backhaul when wired CAN is unavailable.

🌐

HVAC Climate Control Module

The PIC18LF25K83-E/ML's 32KB Flash and 2KB SRAM handle HVAC control loops, PID fan-speed regulation, and LIN master communication to remote damper and blower nodes. The 12-bit ADC2 reads multiple NTC temperature sensors with hardware averaging, while the PWM channels drive TRIAC-controlled heater elements and brushless DC fans. The 1.8-3.6V supply range works directly from 3.3V rails in modern HVAC control boards with abundant digital I/O for LCD displays and rotary encoders.

🖥️

Smart Meter Data Concentrator

In smart-meter data concentrators aggregating consumption from multiple CAN-connected meters, the PIC18LF25K83-E/ML provides the bridge between the CAN physical layer and a backhaul modem. The hardware CAN 2.0B controller manages bus arbitration and error handling while the 64 MHz CPU executes metering protocol stacks. With 1KB EEPROM for parameter storage and 32KB Flash for application code plus bootloader, designers deploy a single firmware image across the LF and F voltage variants.

설계 노트

Estimated: deep-sleep current at 3.0V and 25C is approximately 9 nA with WDT disabled. The PIC18LF25K83-E/ML LF variant supports operation down to 1.8V, allowing direct 2x AA battery use. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin (pins 10 and 28), plus a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the IC. For battery-powered designs, use the RTC mode with an external 32 kHz crystal and the internal LFINTOSC to keep average current below 2 uA in active standby.

The 28-QFN package has an exposed pad (EP) that must be soldered to a thermal pad on the PCB for mechanical reliability and thermal dissipation. Connect the EP to a low-impedance ground plane through at least 9 thermal vias in a 3x3 array. Keep high-frequency signals (CAN, SPI clock) away from the ADC2 analog traces, and route analog inputs with ground guarding to preserve the 12-bit ADC accuracy. Reserve a 4-pin header footprint for ICSP programming (MCLR/VPP, ICSPCLK, ICSPDAT, VSS) even on production boards.

Do not confuse the LF (1.8-3.6V) and F (2.3-5.5V) variants when migrating designs - substituting LF into a 5V system causes immediate damage. The PPS registers must be unlocked via PPSLOCK before configuration and locked again afterward to prevent runaway writes. When using the ADC2 CVD for capacitive touch, calibrate the internal reference voltage at production temperature since CVD gain drifts with VDD. Finally, the MCLR pin requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; do not leave it floating even if unused.

The CAN bus requires 120 ohm termination resistors at each end of the bus; missing termination causes reflections and bit errors. Keep the CANH/CANL traces as a differential pair with 100 ohm impedance, and place the ESD protection diode within 5 mm of the connector. For SPI signals running above 10 MHz, add source-series termination (typically 33 ohm) at the driving end to suppress ringing on long PCB traces (>50 mm). The PPS-mapped SPI pins should be reserved early in the design to avoid last-minute remapping conflicts.
