AB-PROFIBUS-1 Overview
What is a PROFIBUS communication module? A PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus) module is an industrial networking interface that lets a motor starter, drive, valve actuator or remote I/O block join a PROFIBUS DP fieldbus as a slave node. PROFIBUS DP is one of the dominant fieldbus standards in factory automation, standardized by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI), and the module translates industrial bus telegrams (DP-V0/DP-V1) into the host device's internal control registers. The AB-PROFIBUS-1 belongs to the hierarchy: industrial protocol module -> PROFIBUS DP slave -> softstarter communication interface -> ABB PSTX accessory family.
Key features include a single PROFIBUS DP port, Anybus ASIC-based protocol handling for transparent slave behavior, and a bus-side D-sub connector compatible with standard PROFIBUS cable assemblies. The module operates from the host device's logic supply, eliminating the need for an external power input.
The architecture uses HMS Anybus technology (the established third-party PROFIBUS stack used across many ABB and Schneider drives), which guarantees interoperability with PROFIBUS masters from Siemens, ABB AC500 PLCs, Rockwell controllers via PROFIBUS scanners, and Schneider Modicon M340/M580 systems. The module supports standard PROFIBUS DP-V0 cyclic data exchange and the DP-V1 acyclic parameter channel for soft starter parameter read/write.
Typical applications include ABB PSTX soft starter integration on PROFIBUS DP networks, retrofit of legacy fixed-speed motor starters into networked control systems, and decentralised motor control cabinets across process plants. The module is also used in conveyor and pump panels where the same PSTX starter must accept start/stop, reference, and fault-clearing commands from the plant PLC.
When designing with this module, verify that the host ABB PSTX firmware revision supports the Anybus accessory, and ensure the host PLC's GSD file matches the AB-PROFIBUS-1 variant. The single-port design assumes the host acts as a bus node rather than a repeater, so for multi-segment networks add a dedicated PROFIBUS repeater upstream.

Typical Applications
AB-PROFIBUS-1 is suitable for 6 applications: ABB PSTX Soft Starter Network Integration, Pumping Station Motor Control on PROFIBUS, Conveyor System PROFIBUS Backbone, Brownfield Retrofit into Existing PROFIBUS Network, HVAC Fan Starter Network, Process Plant Soft Starter Group with Centralised HMI.
ABB PSTX Soft Starter Network Integration
The AB-PROFIBUS-1 gives an ABB PSTX soft starter a single-port PROFIBUS DP slave interface, allowing a plant PLC such as Siemens S7-1500 with CM 1542-5 or ABB AC500 to start, stop, and monitor the motor without hard-wiring control wiring. The module fits the PSTX accessory slot and is powered from the starter's logic supply, so no extra 24 V wiring is needed. Compared with discrete I/O, the PROFIBUS link delivers remote parameter upload/download via DP-V1 acyclic services, which simplifies commissioning on multi-starter panels. Use it where the starter already exists in a PROFIBUS-only brownfield network and you want consistent PLC visualisation of current, voltage, and fault codes in one HMI screen.
Recommended
Pumping Station Motor Control on PROFIBUS
In a clean-water or wastewater pumping station, the AB-PROFIBUS-1 lets the SCADA PLC talk to each PSTX-driven pump as a PROFIBUS DP slave, exposing start/stop, ramp time, and overload status over a single shielded PROFIBUS cable rather than a multi-core control harness. Pump panels in lift stations typically install 4-8 starters in one cabinet, so the single-port module keeps the fieldbus topology predictable. The DP-V1 channel lets operators push updated ramp profiles out to remote pumps without going to site, an important maintenance benefit on unmanned stations. Combine the AB-PROFIBUS-1 with a Phoenix Contact PSM-ME-PROFIBUS repeater if you have long cable runs beyond the 200 m PROFIBUS segment limit.
Recommended
Conveyor System PROFIBUS Backbone
Conveyor lines in distribution centres and bottling plants use ABB PSTX soft starters with PROFIBUS DP because cable routing overhead is lower than running 24 V I/O back to every motor. The AB-PROFIBUS-1 occupies one PROFIBUS address per conveyor zone, and the master PLC programs start-up ramps centrally so all conveyor belts ramp together and avoid product pile-ups. Single-port module design is sufficient since each starter is a leaf node, not a branching hub. The module's CE marking (per ABB RoHS declaration) and IP20 rating suit the typical conveyor-control cabinet environment behind a closed panel door.
Recommended
Brownfield Retrofit into Existing PROFIBUS Network
For plants that already operate a PROFIBUS DP backbone with Siemens or ABB AC500 masters, the AB-PROFIBUS-1 lets a new PSTX soft starter join the existing network without redesigning the bus topology. Because the module is mechanically keyed to the PSTX accessory slot, retrofit install is a 30-second snap-on followed by a GSD import. Compared with running new multi-core control wires across a busy plant, the PROFIBUS approach often halves the cabinet-side wiring labour, especially where starters are physically scattered across multiple motor-control centres. Pair the module with the ABB Configure tool to set the station address before mounting, so the master online scan recognises the new node immediately.
Recommended
HVAC Fan Starter Network
Large air-handling units in commercial or industrial HVAC plants use ABB PSTX soft starters with the AB-PROFIBUS-1 to give each fan a PROFIBUS DP slave address, so the building-management PLC can start/stop and read run/fault bits consistently. The single-port design is appropriate here because each fan is a leaf node, not a bridge. DP-V1 acyclic reads let the BMS pull motor current and last-trip history for trend logs without polling the HMI. For outdoor air-handling units in cold climates, place the IP20 module inside a heated cabinet so storage temperature -25C minimum is satisfied.
Recommended
Process Plant Soft Starter Group with Centralised HMI
A chemical or food processing plant running eight or more PSTX soft starters across the line can map each starter's AB-PROFIBUS-1 to a single PROFIBUS DP master and surface them on a centralised WinCC or FactoryTalk HMI. Diagnostics become significantly faster because operators see start current, voltage, and trip history on one screen instead of walking the MCC aisle. The PROFINET equivalent (AB-PROFINET-1) is preferred for greenfield projects, but for a plant that standardised on PROFIBUS, the AB-PROFIBUS-1 remains the lowest-risk interface. Use cable redundancy only on the master side; single-port PROFIBUS slaves such as this module do not provide media redundancy by themselves.

Key Differentiators
- Native ABB accessory for PSTX soft starter with Anybus ASIC (vs Generic HMS Anybus X-gateway)
- Single-port PROFIBUS DP leaf node - simplest footprint for brownfield integration (vs AB-PROFINET-1)
- Built-in DP-V1 acyclic channel for remote parameter upload (vs Discrete I/O on a PSTX)
Design Notes
AB-PROFIBUS-1 only fits the ABB PSTX soft starter accessory slot. Installing it on a non-PSTX ABB drive or a third-party starter will not work because the host-side edge connector and mechanical keying are specific to PSTX. Verify host compatibility in the ABB Compare tool before ordering replacements for legacy ABB PSE/PSR soft starters, which use a different accessory bus.
Maintain PROFIBUS segment length under 100 m at 12 Mbit/s or 200 m at 1.5 Mbit/s per IEC 61158 when planning cabinet layout. Place the AB-PROFIBUS-1 such that the D-sub bus connector is reachable from the cabinet gland without stress on the cable. Provide at least 50 mm clearance above and below the PSTX assembly for ventilation; the Anybus module dissipates a small amount of heat through the host stack.
Use PROFIBUS cable that meets the PI purple-sheath specification, with braided shield and 150 ohm characteristic impedance. Terminate the first and last node on each segment with active PROFIBUS terminators (such as Siemens 6GK1500-0DA00); the AB-PROFIBUS-1 itself does not include internal termination. Failure to terminate both ends of a segment is the most common cause of intermittent PROFIBUS comms on PSTX panels.
