AD7472BRU-REEL Overview
A SAR ADC is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary-search successive-approximation algorithm with an internal DAC and comparator to digitize a single analog sample per conversion cycle. SAR ADCs sit in the broader hierarchy of ADC architectures (SAR -> Nyquist-rate ADC -> data converter -> mixed-signal IC -> semiconductor), favored over pipeline or delta-sigma types where low latency, deterministic single-cycle conversion, and simple digital control are required.
Key features include 1.5 MSPS guaranteed throughput on the 12-bit grade (the 10-bit AD7470 in the family runs to 1.75 MSPS), a low-power CMOS process with auto-shutdown between conversions, and a high-speed parallel output bus that connects directly to microprocessors, microcontrollers, or ASICs without glue logic. The input is sampled on the falling edge of CONVST and the result is latched on the rising edge of the same signal, simplifying system timing.
The internal architecture combines a track-and-hold amplifier, a precision charge-redistribution DAC, a comparator, and a successive-approximation register. The 0 V to 2.5 V input range is well suited to single-supply sensor conditioning, and the wide 2.7 V-5.25 V supply range lets the same part work in both 3 V and 5 V systems without level shifting.
Typical applications include battery-powered instrumentation, data acquisition boards, CCD imaging front-ends, optical measurement systems, and process control loops. The low power and small TSSOP footprint also suit handheld test equipment and dense multi-channel acquisition boards.
When designing with this ADC, budget the input settling time and ensure the source impedance seen at the analog input is well below the datasheet's recommended maximum to avoid gain errors. Use a low-impedance reference and adequate decoupling on VDD and REFIN to preserve linearity.

Typical Applications
AD7472BRU-REEL is suitable for 6 applications: Battery-Powered Data Acquisition, Optical and CCD Imaging Front-End, Process Control and Industrial Instrumentation, Handheld Test and Measurement, Motor Control Position Feedback, Audio and Vibration Analysis.
Battery-Powered Data Acquisition
The AD7472BRU-REEL fits battery-powered data acquisition thanks to its 3.34 mW typical dissipation at 1.5 MSPS / 3 V supply and built-in auto-shutdown between conversions. In a handheld multimeter or remote sensor logger, the ADC can be powered from a single Li-ion cell and sampled on demand; average current drops dramatically when sampling only one conversion per millisecond. The parallel 12-bit interface avoids the SPI overhead of higher-end ADCs, simplifying firmware on low-power MCUs. Designers should still budget input settling time and place a small op-amp buffer in front of the ADC to drive its switched-capacitor input without distortion.
Recommended
Optical and CCD Imaging Front-End
The AD7472BRU-REEL serves as a low-latency digitizer in CCD and photodiode imaging front-ends, where its single-cycle SAR conversion avoids pipeline delays and keeps pixel-to-pixel timing deterministic. Its 0 V to 2.5 V input range can be biased by a transimpedance amplifier to digitize photodiode currents directly after gain stage. At 1.5 MSPS the part supports VGA-class line-scan cameras and spectroscopy readout channels. The 24-pin TSSOP footprint keeps the analog front-end compact on multi-channel sensor boards.
Recommended
Process Control and Industrial Instrumentation
Process control loops benefit from the AD7472BRU-REEL's deterministic SAR latency and industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature range. The parallel interface can feed a DSP or FPGA controller for closed-loop PID control of temperature, pressure, or flow sensors. With its 0 V to 2.5 V input range, the ADC pairs cleanly with 4-20 mA current-loop receivers after a precision resistor, digitizing field-sensor outputs at high speed. The wide 2.7 V to 5.25 V supply tolerance supports legacy 5 V PLC backplanes.
Recommended
Handheld Test and Measurement
In handheld oscilloscope probes, multimeters, and portable data loggers, the AD7472BRU-REEL delivers 12-bit accuracy at 1.5 MSPS while consuming only a few milliwatts. Its compact TSSOP-24 package suits dense probe-tip PCBs, and the parallel interface eliminates the firmware overhead of SPI ADC drivers, reducing MCU wake-time. Battery life is extended through the part's automatic shutdown between conversions, allowing thousands of acquisitions per charge cycle in field service tools.
Recommended
Motor Control Position Feedback
The AD7472BRU-REEL can digitize resolver and encoder position feedback in industrial motor control applications. By sampling the demodulated analog position signal at 1.5 MSPS with deterministic SAR latency, the controller obtains low-jitter absolute position data for field-oriented control loops. The industrial temperature grade and small TSSOP package fit integrated motor-driver boards where board space is tight and ambient temperatures are elevated by the adjacent power stage.
Recommended
Audio and Vibration Analysis
The AD7472BRU-REEL supports vibration and audio-bandwidth analysis applications requiring deterministic single-cycle conversion. Its 12-bit resolution captures vibration envelopes at audio rates, while the parallel data bus feeds FPGA-based FFT processors in real time without buffering latency. Compact TSSOP packaging suits multi-axis vibration sensor PCBs used in industrial condition-monitoring systems, while the wide supply range simplifies 5 V analog signal-chain integration.

- Higher resolution upgrade path within same family (vs AD7983BCPZ-R2)
Design Notes
The AD7472BRU-REEL samples the analog input on the falling edge of CONVST. To preserve linearity, the source impedance seen at VIN must be kept well below the datasheet maximum. Place a low-output-impedance op-amp buffer (such as the AD8628) directly at the analog input, and route VIN traces over a continuous ground plane to avoid digital noise coupling.
Decouple AVDD and DVDD with 10 uF tantalum plus 0.1 uF ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of the supply pins. Keep the analog and digital ground returns joined only at a single star point near the AGND/DGND pins of the ADC, otherwise ground bounce from parallel digital bus switching couples into the analog input.
Do not connect the DB0-DB11 outputs directly to long PCB traces that act as antennas; add series damping resistors near the digital outputs if the bus is longer than 50 mm. The REFIN pin must be bypassed with at least 10 uF; a noisy reference directly translates to poor SNR. The NC pin (pin 24) on the TSSOP-24 package must be left floating or grounded - do not connect to a signal.
Compliance Information
