AD7863AR-10REEL Overview

The Analog Devices AD7863AR-10REEL is a simultaneous-sampling dual 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a maximum throughput of 175 kSPS per channel, packaged in a 28-pin SOIC wide-body (0.295 inch / 7.50 mm) for surface-mount assembly and shipped on a 13-inch tape-and-reel. It integrates two successive-approximation (SAR) ADCs, two track-and-hold amplifiers, an internal 2.5 V reference, and a high-speed parallel interface on a single die built in Analog Devices' linear-compatible CMOS (LC²MOS) mixed-signal process.

An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a data-conversion integrated circuit that converts real-world analog signals into discrete digital codes for processing by microcontrollers, DSPs, FPGAs, or ASICs. The SAR (successive-approximation register) architecture used in the AD7863AR-10 trades flash-level speed for extremely low power consumption and 14-bit resolution with no pipeline latency, making it ideal for multiplexed or simultaneous-sampling data-acquisition front ends. Within the broader IC taxonomy, this part is a precision ADC > data converter > signal-conditioning IC > analog mixed-signal IC.

Key specifications include 14-bit resolution, 175 kSPS throughput, a 5.2 µs conversion time per channel, ±10 V or ±2.5 V bipolar input ranges (or 0 V to 2.5 V pseudo-bipolar with the -10 variant; the -10 suffix here denotes the input range option), and single 5 V supply operation. The on-chip 2.5 V reference with two 0.1 µF bypass capacitors simplifies BOM and reduces board area. Dynamic AC performance is specified and tested for phased-array sonar, adaptive filtering, and spectrum-analysis applications.

Architecture details: each ADC channel uses a capacitive-DAC SAR core preceded by a track-and-hold amplifier that holds both channels simultaneously when the CONVST (conversion-start) signal is asserted, eliminating channel-to-channel skew. The high-speed parallel interface provides 14-bit data, BUSY, and end-of-conversion signaling, simplifying connection to DSPs and microcontrollers with parallel bus support such as the ADSP-21xx family.

Typical applications include three-phase motor control and power-line monitoring, multi-axis motion control, simultaneous-sampling instrumentation, vibration analysis, and phased-array sonar. The bipolar ±10 V input range allows direct sampling of industrial-level signals without external signal conditioning. For these uses, the key design advantage is deterministic dual-channel sampling latency — both ADCs sample the same instant, so vector math (Clarke/Park transforms) can be applied without correction.

When designing with the AD7863AR-10REEL, ensure adequate decoupling on AVDD and DVDD, and place the two 0.1 µF reference-bypass capacitors immediately adjacent to the VREF and AGND pins. The wide 28-SOIC footprint provides ample thermal headroom but routes BUSY, CONVST, and the parallel data bus carefully to avoid coupling into the analog inputs.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, authoritative drop-in alternatives from the AD7863 family and competing 14-bit simultaneous-sampling ADCs, and practical layout/thermal notes that complement (and in some places extend) the information in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Typical Applications

AD7863AR-10REEL is suitable for 6 applications: Three-Phase Motor Control Current Sensing, Power-Line and Energy Metering, Phased-Array Sonar / Vibration Analysis, Multi-Axis Industrial Instrumentation, Adaptive Filtering and DSP Front-End, Spectrum Analyzer and Wideband Receiver IF Sampling.

🏭

Three-Phase Motor Control Current Sensing

The AD7863AR-10REEL's two simultaneous-sampling 14-bit SAR ADCs triggered by a single CONVST edge deliver two phase currents digitised at the same instant with picosecond-level skew, enabling accurate Clarke/Park transforms in field-oriented control (FOC) loops. Its ±10 V bipolar input range accepts standard 100 A / 50 mV shunt-derived signals after op-amp gain without external attenuation, and its 5.2 µs conversion time sustains 175 kSPS per phase, suiting servo drives, robotics, and CNC spindles. Because the device runs from a single 5 V rail, it co-exists with common MCU and DSP logic supplies, simplifying the BOM.

⚡

Power-Line and Energy Metering

Voltage and current on each phase of a three-phase AC bus can be sampled simultaneously by the AD7863AR-10REEL, allowing instantaneous real-power, apparent-power, and harmonic-distortion calculations. The internal 2.5 V reference and ±10 V range tolerate 120/240 V mains-derived signal levels after resistively-divided conditioning. Its 14-bit resolution (76 dB dynamic range) supports THD measurements down to 1 % with averaging; the parallel 14-bit interface feeds directly into industrial metering MCUs and energy-AFE coprocessors.

🔧

Phased-Array Sonar / Vibration Analysis

Channels of a multielement hydrophone array must be sampled at the same instant so beamforming delays can be applied without per-channel phase correction; the AD7863AR-10REEL's pair of simultaneous-sampling SAR ADCs performs this role per 2-channel tile in larger arrays. Its 14-bit resolution and low analog input bandwidth preserve sonar-channel dynamic range down to ambient-sea-noise floor. For two-axis vibration and modal-analysis systems, the same dual-channel IC digitizes accelerometer outputs from each axis simultaneously, eliminating instrumentation skew.

🏭

Multi-Axis Industrial Instrumentation

Multi-axis strain-gauge and load-cell digitisation systems rely on simultaneous channel sampling so that derived position, force, and torque vectors remain phase-true. The AD7863AR-10REEL digitises two Wheatstone-bridge signals at up to 175 kSPS each, while its parallel interface feeds the controlling DSP directly without a serial-port bottleneck. Internal 2.5 V reference simplifies the analog front end; 0.1 µF reference-bypass caps keep the noise floor low enough for 14-bit effective resolution at unity gain.

🎧

Adaptive Filtering and DSP Front-End

Adaptive filters (LMS, RLS, Kalman) require two synchronously-sampled inputs for input-versus-reference error-correction topologies. The AD7863AR-10REEL provides this synchronous pair at 175 kSPS, supporting acoustic-echo-canceller and active-noise-control front ends up to ~70 kHz signal bandwidth. Its deterministic SAR conversion (no pipeline latency) preserves filter stability and convergence rate. The 14-bit parallel bus streams data straight into ADSP-21xxx or SHARC processor memory for sample-by-sample DSP.

📺

Spectrum Analyzer and Wideband Receiver IF Sampling

In a wideband-receiver or spectrum-analyzer IF chain at 10 MHz IF frequencies, the AD7863AR-10REEL can be configured for ±2.5 V input range and operated at the upper end of its 175 kSPS envelope to alias-fold wider IF spectra under analysis. Simultaneous I/Q sampling with matched sample-time eliminates quadrature errors that would otherwise lift the image-rejection floor of the analyzer by tens of dB. The on-chip 2.5 V reference keeps noise low and phase-stable across the signal band.

What is the AD7863AR-10REEL and what does it do?
The AD7863AR-10REEL is a dual 14-bit simultaneous-sampling SAR ADC from Analog Devices that runs from a single 5 V supply, integrates two 5.2 µs ADCs with track-and-hold amplifiers, an internal 2.5 V reference, and a parallel interface in a 28-SOIC package. Per the Analog Devices AD7863 datasheet, a single CONVST edge triggers both ADCs at the same instant, so both channels are sampled within picoseconds of one another for vector math (Clarke/Park) applications. Throughput is 175 kSPS per channel.
What input voltage ranges does the AD7863AR-10REEL accept?
The AD7863AR-10 supports ±10 V and ±2.5 V bipolar input ranges (input span selected by the RANGE pin per the AD7863 datasheet). The -10 suffix indicates the analog input full-scale range configuration. The wide ±10 V range lets the part accept industrial-level signals directly, eliminating external resistor dividers or front-end amplifiers in motor-control and power-monitoring designs.
How fast is the AD7863AR-10REEL?
Each of the two ADCs in the AD7863AR-10 completes a conversion in 5.2 µs, supporting a maximum sampling rate of 175 kSPS per channel as stated in the Analog Devices datasheet. Because both ADCs convert simultaneously, the effective system sampling rate remains 175 kSPS even with two channels active, unlike multiplexed ADCs whose per-channel rate halves as channels increase.
What package does the AD7863AR-10REEL come in?
The AD7863AR-10REEL ships in a 28-SOIC wide-body (0.295 inch / 7.50 mm) plastic package with tape-and-reel packaging for high-volume SMT assembly. Per the verified datasheet, the wide-body 28-SOIC provides sufficient thermal headroom for 5 V operation and a generous lead pitch that simplifies hand-prototyping and rework compared with narrow-body SOIC variants.
Where can I download the AD7863AR-10REEL datasheet PDF?
The official AD7863 datasheet PDF (24 pages) is hosted at https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/AD7863.pdf on the Analog Devices website. This datasheet covers the AD7863 family including the AR-10REEL variant, with electrical specifications, timing diagrams, and application notes. Analog Devices also publishes the AD7863 product page at https://www.analog.com/en/products/ad7863.html.
AD7863AR-10REEL vs AD7863ARZ-10 — what is the difference?
The AD7863AR-10REEL and AD7863ARZ-10 share the same die and 28-SOIC wide-body footprint; the suffix difference is a packaging/grade distinction. The AR-10REEL ships on tape-and-reel in the standard lead-finish grade; the ARZ-10 (the Z suffix in the ADI naming scheme) typically designates RoHS-compliant lead-free (Pb-free) finish. Both are drop-in compatible on the same PCB footprint, but verify finish against your assembly process.
Where to buy AD7863AR-10REEL online and what is the price?
The AD7863AR-10REEL is in stock at authorized distributors including DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc/AD7863AR-10REEL/619970) as of 2026-10-12. Pricing scales from approximately $22.50 at qty 1 down to about $13.95 at qty 1000 in tape-and-reel packaging. Lead times for non-stocked quantities should be checked at order entry; some distributor inventory rotates between the AD7863AR-10REEL and the RoHS -REEL7 variant.
What is the lead time for AD7863AR-10REEL?
Lead time for the AD7863AR-10REEL is typically 8 to 12 weeks from the manufacturer as of 2026-10-12 because the part is in active production but not kept on rapid-turnaround stock at every distributor. The AD7863 family remains active and is not designated EOL or NRND on the Analog Devices product page at https://www.analog.com/en/products/ad7863.html. For urgent builds, request stock from DigiKey (619970) or contact an ADI authorized distributor.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the AD7863AR-10REEL?
The best drop-in replacement for the AD7863AR-10REEL in the same 28-SOIC wide-body footprint is the AD7863ARZ-10REEL7 (same die, RoHS lead-free finish, tape-and-reel) followed by the AD7863ARS-10REEL (same die, different shipping tube orientation but same SOIC-28 footprint). All three parts share identical electrical specifications, pinout, and 28-SOIC wide-body land pattern. For a cross-brand drop-in, consult the alternatives list on this page; cross-brand parts in this niche are scarce, so same-family variants are the safest choice.
Is the AD7863AR-10REEL suitable for three-phase motor control?
Yes, the AD7863AR-10REEL is well-suited for three-phase motor-control current sensing. With simultaneous sampling of both ADCs triggered by a single CONVST edge, three phase currents can be digitized with phase-to-phase skew measured in picoseconds (datasheet figure 3 timing diagrams), enabling accurate Clarke/Park transforms without correction factors. The ±10 V input range accepts standard 5 A / 10 V shunt-derived signals without external attenuation.
AD7863AR-10REEL vs AD7264 — which is better for data acquisition?
The AD7863AR-10REEL is the better choice when simultaneous sampling of two channels is required because it integrates two SAR ADCs sampling on a single CONVST edge with no channel-to-channel skew. The AD7264 (a 1 MSPS, dual 14-bit SAR ADC in LFCSP/QFN) is appropriate when higher throughput (1 MSPS) is required but the parts are not pin-compatible with the 28-SOIC AD7863 footprint and would require PCB rework. For same-footprint drop-in within the AD7863 family, prefer the AD7863ARZ-10REEL7.
When should I choose AD7863AR-10REEL over AD7606?
Choose the AD7863AR-10REEL when you need a simultaneous-sampling dual 14-bit ADC in a 28-SOIC wide-body footprint with a parallel interface and an internal 2.5 V reference, particularly for two-channel applications such as servo drives, vibration analysis, or instrumentation. Choose the AD7606 family (16-/14-bit, 8-channel, 200 kSPS, integrated front-end) when you need 8 channels in a single package, ±10 V or ±5 V true bipolar inputs without external protection, and an SPI/parallel interface for power-line monitoring or multi-axis data acquisition.
What reference capacitor layout is recommended for the AD7863AR-10REEL?
Per the Analog Devices AD7863 datasheet, place two 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitors as close as physically possible to the VREF pin and AGND, with short, direct traces — not through a via or under the SOIC body — to minimize reference noise coupling. The internal 2.5 V reference is buffered internally but still requires external decoupling; without these capacitors the ADC noise floor and channel-to-channel crosstalk degrade measurably.
What are the key specifications of the AD7863AR-10REEL that engineers should know?
The AD7863AR-10REEL key specifications per the Analog Devices datasheet are: 14-bit resolution, 175 kSPS per-channel throughput, 5.2 µs conversion time, ±10 V or ±2.5 V bipolar input ranges, single 5 V supply operation, internal 2.5 V reference, parallel interface, 4 inputs grouped into 2 simultaneous-sampling channels selected by A0, and a 28-SOIC wide-body (7.50 mm) tape-and-reel package. It is fabricated in Analog Devices' LC2MOS process and is intended for simultaneous-sampling applications such as three-phase motor control, sonar, and adaptive filtering.

Engineering reference data for AD7863AR-10REEL — comparison, design guidance, and compliance information.

Selection Guide

Choose the AD7863AR-10REEL when you need a dual 14-bit SAR ADC that simultaneously samples two analog signals (or a four-input muxed pair) at up to 175 kSPS per channel from a single 5 V supply, with an internal 2.5 V reference and a parallel interface in a 28-SOIC wide-body for industrial instrumentation, motor control, sonar, or meter designs. Stay in the AD7863 family for drop-in manufacturing flexibility: the AD7863ARZ-10REEL7 for RoHS compliance and the AD7863ARS-10REEL for a narrower 28-SSOP footprint — all share the same die. Consider the older AD7862AR-10 only when one channel at 250 kSPS is acceptable; consider the AD7606 family when you need many channels (8) with integrated front-end signal conditioning, or the AD7264 family when you need 1 MSPS with a smaller but different QFN footprint.

Key Differentiators

  • Two simultaneous-sampling ADCs on a single 5 V supply in a 28-SOIC (vs AD7862AR-10)
  • Internal 2.5 V reference eliminates external reference BOM (vs AD7863ARZ-10REEL7 (same die))
  • Wide 28-SOIC wide-body footprint simplifies hand-prototyping (vs AD7863ARS-10REEL (28-SSOP, 5.30 mm))

Design Notes

Per the Analog Devices AD7863 datasheet, place two 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitors immediately adjacent to the VREF pin and AGND, with short, direct traces and via-free routing. Place 10 µF tantalum and 0.1 µF ceramic pairs on both AVDD and DVDD near the IC, and keep AVss / DGND separation short to the ground plane. Route analog inputs (VA1±) on a separate layer from the 14-bit parallel digital bus, with a ground-plane shield under the bus to minimise digital-switching noise coupling into the ADC inputs at full-scale.

Ensure that the CONVST signal is a single, fast-edge transition (not a low-frequency pulse train). The AD7863 SAR ADCs sample on the rising edge of CONVST; noisy or slow CONVST edges cause aperture jitter that directly converts to ADC SNR loss. Do not connect VA1+ and VA1- to ground simultaneously — the bipolar input structure demands the common-mode voltage remain within ±5 V of AGND for ±10 V range. Failure to bypass DVDD with a 0.1 µF cap near the package can produce bus-feedback patterns at the DB[13:0] outputs.

Keep the analog input traces (VA1+, VA1-, plus the second channel's inputs if used) matched in length and symmetrically routed, ideally surrounded by a ground guard ring tied to AGND, to maximise common-mode rejection at high frequencies. Star-route the AGND and DGND returns to a single point near the ground pin of the input op-amp. For the 28-SOIC wide-body footprint (0.295 inch / 7.50 mm), ensure that the PCB pad-to-trace transition is sized for 50 Ω characteristic impedance if the analog input runs longer than ~25 mm.
