ADS8383IPFBRG4 Overview

The Texas Instruments ADS8383IPFBRG4 is an 18-bit, 500 kHz successive-approximation (SAR) analog-to-digital converter with a unipolar input range, housed in a 48-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package. The device includes an 18-bit capacitor-based SAR A/D converter with an inherent sample-and-hold front end, supports a parallel digital interface with configurable 18-bit, 16-bit (two read cycles), or 8-bit (three read cycles) bus widths, and converts in approximately 1.52 us per sample. Operating from a 5 V analog supply and a 2.7 V to 5.25 V digital supply, the ADS8383 achieves excellent AC and DC performance while consuming only modest power.

An SAR ADC is a successive-approximation-register analog-to-digital converter that uses a comparator, an internal DAC, and a successive-approximation register to perform a binary search across the analog input on each conversion cycle. SAR ADCs are valued for low-latency deterministic conversion, excellent DC accuracy, and superior dynamic performance compared to many delta-sigma converters of similar speed, making them the converter of choice for multiplexed data-acquisition systems, instrumentation, and control loops. The ADS8383 belongs to the broader data-converter IC family within TI's precision-mixed-signal portfolio, sitting alongside pipeline and delta-sigma converters in the signal-chain hierarchy.

Key features include 18-bit resolution with no missing codes, a true bipolar or unipolar differential input option, a hardware-friendly conversion-start (CONVST) pin, a busy/end-of-conversion indicator, a programmable reference, low-power dissipation, and a -40C to +85C industrial operating range. The wide parallel interface allows direct connection to microcontrollers, FPGAs, and DSPs with 8, 16, or 32-bit data buses, eliminating the need for an external serializer and minimizing glue logic.

The architecture combines an input sample-and-hold, an internal conversion clock, calibration logic, and a flexible digital interface to produce low-noise, low-distortion conversions at 500 kSPS. Designers can disable unused sections to reduce power, and the device supports both unipolar (0 V to VREF) and true-bipolar (+/-VREF) input configurations for maximum signal-chain flexibility.

Typical applications include industrial process control, multi-channel data-acquisition systems, medical instrumentation, optical networking modules, vibration and acoustic analysis, and precision sensor front ends. The 500 kSPS throughput and 18-bit noise floor suit it well for closed-loop servo control and high-accuracy measurement front-ends.

When designing with the ADS8383, allocate separate analog and digital ground planes joined at a single star point near the IC, decouple both AVDD and DVDD with low-ESR ceramic capacitors placed within 3 mm of each supply pin, and provide a low-impedance low-noise external reference (such as the REF5050) for best linearity.

This page aggregates parametric data from the manufacturer datasheet, current distributor inventory, and cross-reference alternatives - giving engineers a more complete procurement and design picture than the bare datasheet alone.

🏭

Industrial Process Control Data Acquisition

The ADS8383IPFBRG4's 18-bit resolution and 500 kSPS throughput suit it to multi-channel data-acquisition front-ends that sample sensor signals from thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, and process-control transducers in factory automation. With 1.52 us conversion time, the ADC easily handles multiplexed 8- or 16-channel scan rates above 30 kSPS per channel. Low integral nonlinearity preserves measurement accuracy over the full industrial -40C to +85C range, while the parallel interface streams data directly into a host MCU, FPGA, or DSP without glue logic. Pair the ADC with the REF5050 reference and an OPA2277 input buffer for a complete 18-bit analog input module for PLC and DCS systems.

💊

Medical Instrumentation Signal Chains

For medical instrumentation including patient monitors, infusion-pump controllers, and bench-top analyzers, the ADS8383IPFBRG4 offers the 18-bit dynamic range needed to resolve microvolt-level bioelectric signals after front-end amplification. The 500 kSPS throughput captures physiological waveforms such as ECG, EMG, and SpO2 pulse oximetry while leaving headroom for digital filtering. The 48-TQFP package fits compact, IEC 60601-style board layouts, and the wide digital-supply range (2.7 V to 5.25 V) enables direct connection to 3.3 V microcontrollers. Combine with a precision front end such as the INA118 instrumentation amplifier for best signal fidelity.

⚡

Precision Sensor Front-End Modules

Strain-gauge bridges, load cells, pressure transducers, and weighing scales benefit from the ADC's 18-bit no-missing-code performance and low noise floor, which preserve the smallest weight or pressure changes after amplification. The 500 kSPS sample rate keeps up with high-bandwidth load-cell transient response, while the parallel interface feeds data directly into the host processor for digital filtering, calibration, and temperature compensation. Using a 5 V reference such as REF5050, designers achieve better than 16-bit effective resolution across the full industrial temperature range - more than adequate for legal-for-trade weigh scales and precision force measurement.

🌐

Optical Network Transponder Monitoring

In optical networking transponder and line-card designs, the ADS8383IPFBRG4 monitors laser-bias currents and receive-side photodiode signals with 18-bit dynamic range. The 500 kSPS throughput continuously samples AGC, laser-driver feedback, and wavelength-of-channel telemetry for adaptive equalization. The -40C to +85C industrial operating range and small 48-TQFP footprint suit it to compact hot-pluggable module layouts. The wide parallel interface is compatible with FPGA-based forward-error-correction engines and cross-connect ASICs used in long-haul and metro transponders, while the 5 V analog supply noise floor does not exceed the photodiode shot-noise floor.

🖥️

Vibration and Acoustic Analysis Systems

Condition-monitoring systems deployed on rotating machinery use the ADS8383IPFBRG4 to digitize vibration and acoustic-emission signals at 500 kSPS with 18-bit resolution, capturing bearing-fault signatures at full bandwidth. The deterministic SAR latency produces no conversion-time jitter, which is critical for accurate synchronous analysis alongside tachometer and phase-reference inputs. Engineers feed the parallel output into an FPGA or DSP for envelope detection, FFT analysis, and bearing-fault frequency tracking. With wide temperature tolerance and a flexible 18/16/8-bit bus, the part fits both compact wireless sensor modules and rack-mounted vibration analyzers.

🔧

Multi-Rail Power-Supply Monitoring

Within ATE and telecom equipment, the ADS8383IPFBRG4 monitors multiple voltage rails via an external analog multiplexer, sampling each rail at hundreds of kSPS while a host MCU sequences the channels and aggregates results. The ADC's 18-bit resolution captures the small voltage margins of 0.8 V cores and 1.2 V DDR rails while the wide analog supply range supports 3.3 V, 5 V, and 12 V system buses via resistive dividers. The 48-TQFP package is small enough to integrate into the monitor card while providing easy scope probing. Combined with a FIFO buffer or FPGA, the part enables per-rail voltage-trend logging for fault diagnostics.

Selection Guide

Choose the ADS8383IPFBRG4 for industrial, medical, and instrumentation designs that demand true 18-bit resolution at 500 kSPS within a moderate-footprint 48-TQFP package. Pick this part when you need a flexible parallel interface that adapts to 8-bit, 16-bit, or 18-bit host buses. If your design only requires 16-bit precision, the ADS8361IPFBT or ADS8382IRHPR (same family) offer cost savings, but you lose 4x dynamic range. Pick the ADS8383IPFBR or ADS8383IPFBT if you need a different reel quantity (1000 or 250 pieces respectively) at the same electrical performance - all three IPFBxx variants are drop-in equivalent. For new designs not requiring 18-bit precision, evaluate whether a modern TI SAR ADC (e.g., ADS8860 or ADS7042) better matches your system, as the ADS8383 family is widely available but represents earlier-generation IP.

Design Notes

Use a four-layer PCB with separate analog and digital ground planes joined at a single star point beneath the ADC ground pins. Place 10 uF + 100 nF X5R ceramic decoupling within 3 mm of each AVDD pin and 100 nF within 3 mm of each DVDD pin. Keep analog input traces short and guarded by AVSS on both sides to minimize injected digital noise. The REF pin should be decoupled with a 10 uF + 100 nF low-ESR ceramic pair routed to the reference ground plane - layout here directly affects 18-bit linearity.

Power the analog 5 V AVDD rail from a low-noise linear regulator (such as TPS7A4701 or REF5050-derived LDO) rather than directly from a switching converter. The ADS8383IPFBRG4 has no internal analog supply rejection at the switching frequencies of typical DC-DC converters; any switching noise above 20 kHz couples directly into the ADC output as spurious tones. If a switching pre-regulator is unavoidable, post-filter the AVDD rail with a ferrite bead and additional LC pi-section.

Do not leave the BYPS pin floating - it requires a 0.1 uF ceramic bypass capacitor to AVSS for internal reference stability, otherwise gain error may exceed 1%. The TEST pin must be left floating or tied to AVSS; driving it low or high can engage factory test modes. The CONVST input has minimum pulse-width and setup-time requirements (see datasheet AC timing); violating them results in degraded SNR rather than a hard error. Finally, ensure the input signal settles within 1.52 us before the next CONVST pulse or use the front-end amplifier's bandwidth to a fraction of the sample rate.

Route the 18-bit parallel data bus DB[17:0] in a controlled-impedance group with series damping resistors (22 ohm to 33 ohm) at the ADC end if the bus length exceeds 50 mm. Add a ground trace between adjacent data lines to suppress crosstalk. The CONVST, BUSY, CS, and RD control signals should be routed together and length-matched to the data bus within 5 mm to minimize timing skew. For 18-bit systems at high ambient temperatures, derate sample rate linearly above 70C to avoid exceeding internal timing margins.
