Automotive Electronics
In automotive systems, isolation is needed between the CAN bus and I2C sensors. The ADUM2250ARWZ-RL7 provides 5 kV isolation, protecting sensitive electronics from high-voltage transients in electric vehicles. Its high CMTI (25 kV/µs) ensures reliable data transfer in the presence of motor noise. The device operates over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C) and is available in an automotive-grade version (ADUM2250WARWZ). The hot-swap feature is useful for battery management systems that require module replacement.
Recommended
Power Management Systems
Power management systems often require isolation between control and power stages. The ADUM2250ARWZ-RL7 isolates I2C buses in power supplies, battery chargers, and solar inverters. Its 5 kV isolation prevents ground loops and protects control circuits from high-voltage transients. The device's low propagation delay (100 ns) ensures fast response in feedback loops. The hot-swap capability is beneficial for redundant power supplies. With a 30 mA sink capability, it can drive multiple I2C devices on the isolated side.
Recommended
Telecommunications
In telecom equipment, isolation is required between line cards and backplane I2C buses. The ADUM2250ARWZ-RL7 provides 5 kV isolation, protecting against lightning surges and ground potential differences. Its 1 Mbps data rate supports fast I2C communication for configuration and monitoring. The hot-swap feature allows for line card replacement without shutting down the system. Design Notes
For 5 kV isolation, ensure PCB creepage and clearance distances meet safety standards. The SOIC-16 package has a minimum creepage of 8 mm, but you must maintain at least 8 mm spacing between the high-voltage and low-voltage sides on the PCB. Use a slot or cutout under the isolator to increase creepage distance if needed.
Decouple both VDD1 and VDD2 with 0.1 µF ceramic capacitors placed as close to the pins as possible. Additionally, use a 10 µF bulk capacitor on each side if the supply is shared with other components. The ADuM2250 draws quiescent current of approximately 5 mA per side, so ensure the supply can handle the load.
Keep the I2C traces short and avoid routing them near high-voltage or high-current traces to minimize noise coupling. Use ground planes on both sides of the isolation barrier, but do not connect them together. The iCoupler technology is sensitive to magnetic fields, so avoid placing the device near transformers or inductors.
Compliance Information
RoHS compliant per Analog Devices product page. AEC-Q100 not applicable for standard version; automotive version ADUM2250WARWZ is AEC-Q100 qualified.
