MAX150AEWP+T Overview

The Maxim Integrated MAX150AEWP+T is a high-speed, 8-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a built-in track-and-hold amplifier and an internal 2.5V reference, housed in a 20-pin wide-body SOIC (EWP) package. The device uses a half-flash (two-step) architecture to achieve a conversion time of approximately 1.34 microseconds (per the underlying MAX150/MX7820 family datasheet), supporting up to ~500 ksamples/s sample rates while drawing a typical 35 mW from a single +5V analog and +5V digital supply.

An 8-bit flash ADC is a data-conversion IC that translates an analog input voltage into a parallel 8-bit digital output code on each conversion. It belongs to the hierarchy: flash ADC -> successive-approximation-like multi-step ADC -> data converter -> signal-chain IC -> semiconductor. Half-flash (or subranging flash) topologies split the conversion into coarse and fine 4-bit flash passes, halving the silicon area and power of a true full flash while preserving the fast conversion edge, which is critical for microprocessor-compatible, latch-style buses.

Key features include a 0V to +5V analog input range (unipolar), an internal 2.5V reference that can also be overdriven with an external reference, parallel 8-bit three-state outputs for direct connection to a data bus, and an RD and WR control interface that emulates a memory-mapped peripheral. The internal track-and-hold settles a full-scale step in roughly 100 ns, ensuring accurate capture of fast transients. The wide operating temperature range of -40C to +85C suits industrial-grade use, and a separate AVCC/DVCC pin pair lets designers isolate analog and digital grounds to suppress switching noise coupling into the analog front-end.

Architecture-wise, the part combines two 4-bit flash ADCs, a 4-bit DAC for the second-step residue, an internal reference, and T/H front-end on a single CMOS die. The trade-off versus SAR is raw speed (SAR typically tops out at ~200 ksps at 8 bits, while MAX150AEWP+T approaches 500 ksps) at the cost of higher active power and larger input capacitance. Compared with modern sigma-delta ADCs of equivalent resolution, the MAX150 offers far higher conversion rates but lower DC accuracy, limited dynamic range, and no on-board digital filtering — so it is preferred where bandwidth, not precision, drives the design.

Typical applications include microprocessor-based data-acquisition front-ends, video/IF digitizing at IF frequencies, DSP front-ends, high-speed instrumentation such as digital oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers, and industrial process-control boards where 8-bit resolution at high throughput is acceptable. Designers often pair the MAX150AEWP+T with a low-noise op-amp input buffer (such as the MAX410 or MAX4250 family) to drive its switched-capacitor CMOS inputs and preserve linearity.

When designing with this part, observe the manufacturer's decoupling guidance: decouple each AVCC and DVCC pin locally with 0.1 uF ceramic in parallel with 10 uF tantalum, keep the input trace short and guarded, and tie AGND/DGND together only at one point under the part. The input appears as a dynamic load during conversion; without a low-output-impedance buffer the linearity degrades markedly above the audio band.

Typical Applications

MAX150AEWP+T is suitable for 6 applications: Microprocessor Data-Acquisition Front-End, Video and IF Signal Digitizing, Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Front-End, Industrial Process Control and Instrumentation, High-Speed Test and Measurement, Automotive Telematics and Two-Way Radio Digitizing.

🖥️

Microprocessor Data-Acquisition Front-End

The MAX150AEWP+T interfaces directly to 8-bit microprocessor data buses via RD, WR, and CS lines, emulating a memory-mapped peripheral that drops into 8051, 68HC11, and Z80 style designs. With 1.34 us typical conversion time and 0 V to 5 V unipolar input, it pairs naturally with 4-20 mA current-shunt digitizers scaled into the 0-5 V input span. The parallel 8-bit three-state outputs eliminate handshaking overhead, so a polled acquisition loop can reach up to ~500 ksps throughput when the processor keeps up. Recommended companion parts: MAX708R (MPU supervisor) and MAX410 (low-noise input buffer). Designers should validate address-latch timing against the access time of their host CPU.

📺

Video and IF Signal Digitizing

The MAX150AEWP+T's 500 ksps throughput comfortably digitizes low-bandwidth video and 455 kHz-10.7 MHz ceramic-IF signals from super-heterodyne receivers at 8-bit resolution. The on-chip track-and-hold acquires full-scale steps in 100 ns, capturing IF burst edges without slew-rate-induced distortion. Place the ADC after the second IF stage with a 470-ohm source resistance; the input appears as a transient load during the conversion clock, so a low-output-impedance driver like the MAX410 is recommended. For composite video digitizing at sample rates above 1 MHz, cascade two MAX150AEWP+T channels or substitute a faster SAR part. The 0-5 V unipolar span maps directly onto standard 1 Vpp video after a resistive level shifter.

🌐

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Front-End

The MAX150AEWP+T serves as the analog-to-digital front-end for DSP boards running envelope detection, FIR filtering, or FFT spectrum analysis on signals up to ~200 kHz. Its 8-bit resolution and 500 ksps rate produce a 35 mW typical active power draw, which fits battery or fanless industrial enclosures. The half-flash topology introduces no pipeline latency, so a DSP can fetch a fresh sample every 2 us without FIFO buffering. Use the parallel output to drive a 16-pin ribbon directly into a DSP McBSP or external memory bus, with 74HC245 line drivers if bus capacitance exceeds the ADC's 50 pF load budget. Add a MAX708 supervisor to keep the DSP in reset until the analog supply stabilizes at 5 V within 4%.

🏭

Industrial Process Control and Instrumentation

The MAX150AEWP+T's -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade and 5 V single-supply operation suit PLC analog input modules, panel-meter digitizer boards, and SCADA remote-terminal units. The 0 V to 5 V input span maps directly onto 4-20 mA current-loop signals after a 250 ohm sense resistor, removing the need for a bipolar front-end op-amp. Its 8-bit resolution yields ~19.5 mV per LSB at 5 V full scale, adequate for trending and alarm thresholds but not for closed-loop PID control where >12-bit SAR converters are preferred. Keep the AGND and DGND planes joined only under the SO-20 package to break ground loops from the field wiring; bypass each AVCC and DVCC with 10 uF tantalum plus 0.1 uF ceramic.

🔧

High-Speed Test and Measurement

The MAX150AEWP+T digitizes transient waveforms in laboratory instruments such as bench multimeters, frequency counters, and stimulus-response testers. Its 100 ns track-and-hold acquisition lets it capture the leading edge of a pulsed signal feeding a comparator or a digital-storage oscilloscope's analog front-end. Parallel 8-bit outputs feed directly into an FPGA or micro FIFO without glue logic, simplifying firmware design. For multi-channel simultaneous sampling applications, synchronize multiple MAX150AEWP+T devices by sharing the same WR/RD clock and using an external analog MUX such as the MAX4617 in front of each input. Each ADC supports a 0-5 V direct connection or a divided higher-voltage input after protection resistors.

🚗

Automotive Telematics and Two-Way Radio Digitizing

The MAX150AEWP+T brings 8-bit resolution and ~500 ksps throughput to AM/FM demodulated audio, audio-bandwidth SSB radio, and automotive telematics channels that monitor analog sensors via the OBD-II bus. Its industrial temperature grade tolerates under-hood thermal swings and 12 V battery transients after a TVS-protected 5 V regulator such as the MAX5033. The internal 2.5 V reference decouples the ADC from supply noise typically present on automotive harnesses, while the half-flash architecture avoids pipeline delay critical for real-time audio processing. For end-of-line tests on automotive audio head units, the MAX150AEWP+T can replace more expensive audio-specific ADCs.

What is the resolution and conversion speed of MAX150AEWP+T?
The MAX150AEWP+T is an 8-bit analog-to-digital converter using a half-flash architecture with on-chip track-and-hold. According to the MAX150/MX7820 family datasheet, conversion time is typically 1.34 us, yielding a maximum throughput of roughly 500 ksps. This makes it suitable for digitizing signals up to ~200 kHz while preserving Nyquist headroom at 8-bit resolution.
What is the analog input voltage range of MAX150AEWP+T?
The MAX150AEWP+T accepts an unipolar analog input range of 0 V to +5 V when using the internal 2.5 V reference. The internal reference can be externally overdriven, in which case the input span scales linearly; for example, a 5.0 V external reference preserves the 0 V to 5 V full-scale span, while a 2.5 V external reference halves the input range to 0 V to 2.5 V for maximum resolution at lower signal swings.
Does MAX150AEWP+T need an external reference voltage?
No, the MAX150AEWP+T includes a built-in 2.5 V reference, so it operates stand-alone in most designs. However, the internal reference can be overdriven with an external low-impedance source if higher absolute accuracy, lower drift, or a different full-scale range is required. Designers typically add a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor on REF and may use the REF output to bias external circuitry.

MAX150AEWP+T vs MAX150CEWP - which should I choose?
Choose the MAX150AEWP+T (industrial temperature grade, -40C to +85C) for industrial and commercial systems exposed to wider thermal envelopes. Choose the MAX150CEWP (commercial grade, 0C to +70C) only if your product is guaranteed never to see temperatures outside that window. The internal silicon, package, and electrical parameters are otherwise identical, so either part performs the same electrically; the temperature grade drives the decision.
What is the difference between MAX150AEWP+T and MX7820KEWP?
The MX7820 is the pin- and functionally-compatible second source to the MAX150 from another Maxim-compatible lineage; the MAX150AEWP+T and MX7820KEWP share the same 20-pin SOIC footprint and parallel interface. The MAX150AEWP+T typically has a slightly tighter INL and is preferred for new designs, while the MX7820KEWP is often specified as a second source on automotive or long-lifecycle boards. Always verify timing parameters against your microprocessor bus speed before swapping.
When should I select MAX150AEWP+T over a successive-approximation ADC?
Choose the MAX150AEWP+T when your design needs conversion speeds above ~200 ksps at 8 bits — for example, video signal digitizing, IF sampling, or high-speed instrumentation. Choose a SAR ADC instead when you need better than 0.5 LSB linearity, lower power, smaller package, or higher DC accuracy for precision measurements; SAR parts typically top out at 100-200 ksps but offer superior DC and low-frequency performance.
Is MAX150AEWP+T suitable for audio sampling applications?
Yes, the MAX150AEWP+T can sample audio well above the 20 kHz Nyquist requirement at 8-bit resolution, offering about 50 dB of dynamic range. For higher-fidelity audio above 16-bit resolution, the part is not suitable; designers select sigma-delta codecs such as the MAX1093 instead. The MAX150AEWP+T is best used in audio-bandwidth systems where 8-bit voice or signaling digitization is sufficient, such as two-way radio IF stages or amateur DSP front-ends.
What is the best drop-in replacement for MAX150AEWP+T?
The best drop-in replacements for the MAX150AEWP+T are the MAX150CEWP+T (commercial temperature grade, same 20-pin SOIC footprint) and the MX7820KEWP+ / MX7820KEWP+T (industry-standard second source). All share the same half-flash architecture, parallel 8-bit interface, and 20-pin SOIC package footprint, so they can typically be substituted on the same PCB without rework. Always check the VREF and timing parameters against your system spec before final substitution.
What is the best Analog Devices equivalent for MAX150AEWP+T?
After Maxim was acquired by Analog Devices, the MAX150AEWP+T is itself the Analog Devices line item; the closest in-house Analog Devices alternative is the AD7820, which shares the 8-bit half-flash topology, parallel interface, and SO-20 footprint. The AD7820KNZ offers near-identical sample rates and is a fully footprint-compatible drop-in. For industrial designs with this generation of parts, validate timing before swapping because minor timing differences exist between the two datasheets.
Where to download the MAX150AEWP+T datasheet PDF?
The MAX150AEWP+T datasheet PDF can be downloaded directly from the Maxim Integrated (now Analog Devices) archived product page, from third-party datasheet databases such as alldatasheet.com, or from DigiKey's product page under the Documentation tab. Selection Guide

Choose the MAX150AEWP+T when your design needs an 8-bit, ~500 ksps analog-to-digital converter in a 20-pin wide-body SOIC, exposing a parallel microprocessor-compatible bus and an internal 2.5 V reference, and operating across -40C to +85C industrial temperatures. Choose the MAX150CEWP+T if your product stays inside a commercial 0C to +70C window and you want the lowest unit price. Choose the MX7820KEWP+ / MX7820KEWP+T when you need a second source for procurement risk management — they are pin-to-pin compatible with the MAX150, identical electrically, and well-supported on long-lifecycle programs. Choose the AD7820KNZ when a footprint-compatible analog devices second source is required and an external reference is acceptable; note the AD7820 lacks an internal reference. All five parts share the 20-pin wide-body SOIC footprint, so layout reuse across revisions is straightforward.

Design Notes

Estimated: with separate AVCC and DVCC pins, place a 10 uF tantalum plus 0.1 uF ceramic on each supply pin within 5 mm of the package. The 5 V analog and digital rails should be generated from a single LDO (e.g. MAX5033) and not from a switching converter, to keep switching noise out of the conversion. Tie AGND and DGND together at one point directly beneath the IC to avoid ground loops; keep the analog ground pour unbroken beneath the part and isolated from noisy digital return currents.

Keep the AIN trace short and guarded with a driven analog ground ring on each side. The switched-capacitor nature of the CMOS input momentarily loads the input to the analog ground; the source impedance must be below 1 kohm during the acquisition clock for full INL. Place a low-output-impedance buffer such as the MAX410ESA+T directly in front of AIN with a 1 kohm series damping resistor for stability against the ADC's sample-and-hold kickback.

Do not leave the MODE pin floating; tie it to DVCC or GND via a 10 kohm pull to select standalone start vs read-only mode, otherwise the conversion trigger may glitch and produce inconsistent results. The REF output needs at least 0.1 uF of decoupling; bypassing with an extra 10 uF is recommended for high-sample-rate digitizing. CS must be valid before the falling edge of RD/WR or the internal state machine can enter an undefined mode, requiring a power-on reset cycle.

The parallel 8-bit outputs can drive up to 50 pF of bus capacitance; if your bus capacitance exceeds this (e.g. with multiple 74HC245 buffers plus ribbon cable), insert a 74HC245 line driver within 30 mm of the ADC outputs to maintain timing margin. Keep the RD, WR, and CS traces matched in length to within 5 mm to avoid chip-select glitch and to minimize bus-skew errors. INT/END-OF-CONVERSION is a dynamic signal and should be isolated from CS to prevent priority-encoder-style contention.

Estimated: at 35 mW analog + 40 mW digital, total package dissipation is approximately 75 mW at 5 V operation, giving a junction-to-ambient temperature rise of about 2.5C on a 1 oz 2-layer FR4 board. The wide-body SOIC package does not require additional heatsinking under normal industrial ambient conditions, but always verify with a thermal camera during high-density card-stack designs where neighboring ICs raise the local ambient.
