MCF51JE256CLK Overview

The NXP MCF51JE256CLK is a 32-bit ColdFire V1 microcontroller featuring 256KB of Flash, 32KB of RAM, a 50MHz core, and an integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed controller, housed in an 80-pin LQFP (12x12 mm) package. It belongs to NXP's MCF51JE family, combining ultra-low-power operation, USB connectivity, and high analog measurement accuracy in a single mixed-signal MCU.

What is a ColdFire V1 microcontroller? ColdFire V1 is a 32-bit RISC processor architecture derived from the original Motorola 68000 family, optimized for embedded applications that need higher performance than 8/16-bit MCUs but with the deterministic interrupt response and low power consumption required by industrial and consumer systems. The ColdFire V1 core sits within the broader hierarchy of 32-bit microcontroller cores -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor, and competes architecturally with ARM Cortex-M0/M0+ devices while preserving ColdFire instruction-set compatibility for legacy code bases.

The MCF51JE256CLK integrates a 12-bit SAR ADC with up to 20 channels, a 12-bit DAC, multiple timers (FTM, PWT, RTC), an I2C bus, two SCI/UART modules, and an SPI peripheral set. Its high-resolution analog front-end supports precision sensor conditioning in industrial metering and medical instrumentation. The integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed On-The-Go (OTG) controller with dedicated PHY enables direct device/host/OTG roles without external transceivers.

Typical applications include industrial metering and data loggers, USB HID peripherals, smart sensors, medical monitoring devices, and low-power portable instrumentation. The wide operating voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V makes it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V system rails. Multiple low-power modes (Wait, Stop, Standby) allow deep power optimization for battery-powered designs.

When designing with this MCU, allocate PCB area for a decoupling cap cluster near each power pin and ensure the USB D+/D- traces are 90-ohm differential-matched and as short as possible. For new designs, verify NXP's PCN notice for the MCF51JE family before committing, as several variants have entered End-of-Life status. The standard 80-LQFP footprint and JTAG/SWD debug path ease migration to alternate members of the JE family.

Key Differentiators

  • Integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed OTG PHY (vs MCF51MM128VLK)
  • Largest Flash in the JE family at 256KB (vs MCF51JE128VLK)
  • Higher ADC channel count with integrated 12-bit DAC (vs MCF51AG96CLK)

Design Notes

Decouple each VDD/VSS pair with 100nF ceramic plus 4.7uF bulk close to the IC. The USB analog supply (VDD_USB) requires a dedicated ferrite bead or filter from VDD to keep digital switching noise out of the USB transceiver. Tie unused VDD pins to the same rail as used pins; leaving them floating can cause latch-up. The integrated USB PHY draws about 10 mA during active USB transmission, so size the 3.3V regulator for at least 50 mA total MCU load including USB.

Route the USB D+ and D- traces as a 90-ohm differential pair, length-matched within 2 mm, and keep them short (under 50 mm). Place the ESD protection array within 5 mm of the USB connector. Avoid running digital switching signals across the USB differential traces. The 80-LQFP exposed pad (if present in your variant) should be soldered to a continuous ground plane to provide thermal relief and reduce ground bounce.

Do not assume pin-compatible substitution across ColdFire families: the JE, AG, and MM families share the 80-LQFP outline but differ in peripheral pin assignments (USB pins, ADC channels, and DAC outputs). Verify the pin map against your schematic before swapping. Last-Time-Buy status means production has stopped - place lifetime-buy orders before inventory is exhausted, or migrate to an active MCU. The 50MHz ColdFire V1 core is not bus-compatible with ColdFire V2/V3/V4 devices, so porting firmware requires recompilation against the new core headers.
