TJA1462BT Overview
A CAN transceiver (sometimes called a CAN bus transceiver or CAN physical-layer interface) is the analog interface between a digital CAN protocol controller and the differential CAN bus wires. It converts digital transmit (TXD) bits from the controller into differentially driven bus levels on CANH and CANL, and converts received bus levels back into digital RXD bits, providing galvanic isolation level shifting and ESD protection for the controller.
Key features include bus signal improvement that reduces ringing on the CAN bus, allowing larger topologies and higher data rates than classical HS-CAN transceivers. The device operates from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V VCC supply, supports up to 8 Mbit/s in CAN FD networks, and offers a low-power Standby mode entered via the STB pin. The TJA1462 is intended as a pin-compatible drop-in replacement for the TJA1042 or TJA1044 from NXP, enabling direct retrofit without hardware or software changes.
The architecture uses a fully differential driver with slope control and integrated bus failure protection, including TXD dominant time-out, bus dominant time-out, and overtemperature shutdown. Receiver symmetry is trimmed to provide reliable operation at recessive voltages as low as 0.5 V on the bus.
Typical applications include automotive ECUs, body control modules, gateway ECUs, industrial CAN nodes, and any node that needs to coexist with mixed CAN FD / classical CAN networks on the same bus segment, where the SIC function reduces the required bit time and improves EMC behavior on long stubs.
When designing with the TJA1462BT, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor close to pin 8 (VCC) and ensure the bus termination (typically 120 ohm at each end of the bus) is present. Use the STB pin to enter Standby when the node is inactive to reduce quiescent current, and verify that the bit timing of the CAN controller remains within ISO 11898-2:2024 limits for SIC operation.

Typical Applications
TJA1462BT is suitable for 6 applications: Automotive Body Control Module (BCM), In-Vehicle Network Gateway ECU, Industrial CAN FD Node (Robot / PLC), CAN FD Charging Communication (EV Supply Equipment), Agricultural / Off-Highway Vehicle CAN Bus, Building Automation / HVAC CAN Segment.
Automotive Body Control Module (BCM)
The TJA1462BT's CAN SIC capability, supporting bus data rates up to 8 Mbit/s per ISO 11898-2:2024, makes it ideal for body control modules where the network must carry CAN FD traffic alongside classical CAN nodes on a shared bus. The SOIC-8 footprint matches existing BCM designs that today use TJA1042 or TJA1044 transceivers, enabling a direct, no-PCB-rework retrofit. Standby mode reduces quiescent current while the BCM is parked, supporting OEM power-saving requirements.
Recommended
In-Vehicle Network Gateway ECU
Gateway ECUs aggregate multiple CAN buses and forward frames between domains, where the bus-side speed determines overall latency. With up to 8 Mbit/s and CAN SIC, the TJA1462BT lowers bit-time on the gateway's CAN FD channel and tolerates longer stubs to sub-modules without ringing-induced errors. The 4.5V to 5.5V VCC range is compatible with typical gateway regulator rails, and the SOIC-8 package keeps the layout dense. Pair with NXP's S32K3 MCU family for gateway firmware.
Recommended
Industrial CAN FD Node (Robot / PLC)
Industrial robots and PLCs increasingly adopt CAN FD for sensor backbones, and the TJA1462BT's SIC capability reduces ringing on long factory-floor harnesses that cannot be perfectly terminated. Its -40 C to +150 C junction temperature range supports cabinet and field installations, while Standby mode enables low-power sleep for battery-backed nodes. The SOIC-8 package drops onto existing HS-CAN footprints, simplifying migration paths for retrofit programs in industrial automation.
Recommended
CAN FD Charging Communication (EV Supply Equipment)
Although EV charging uses CCS PLC for AC/DC fast-charging, many stationary EVSE controllers expose internal CAN FD diagnostics and DC bus telemetry. The TJA1462BT provides up to 8 Mbit/s over the service CAN, with SIC reducing stub-induced ringing between isolated modules inside the EVSE cabinet. Its wide operating temperature and standby support energy-star compliance for sleeping between sessions. SOIC-8 simplifies hand-assembly of field-replaceable control boards.
Recommended
Agricultural / Off-Highway Vehicle CAN Bus
Off-highway vehicles combine CAN FD ECUs for engine, hydraulics and implement control, often with harness lengths well beyond automotive limits. The TJA1462BT's CAN SIC reduces ringing on long stubs typical of tractor and combine harnesses, allowing 5 to 8 Mbit/s communication over topologies that classical HS-CAN transceivers cannot serve. The -40 C to +150 C junction range covers under-hood and cab-roof temperatures, and the SOIC-8 footprint is easily serviced in field-replaceable modules.
Recommended
Building Automation / HVAC CAN Segment
BACnet MS/TP and proprietary building-automation backbones often migrate to CAN FD for higher payload rates between chillers, AHU controllers and VAV boxes. The TJA1462BT's SIC improves bus signal quality across long cable runs inside mechanical rooms and risers, while Standby mode reduces idle consumption for always-on controllers. SOIC-8 makes it easy to assemble DIN-rail control boards with conventional pick-and-place equipment. Pair with NXP LPC or Kinetis MCUs for BACnet gateways.

Design Notes
Place a 100 nF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to pin 8 (VCC) of the TJA1462BT, with the ground side returned to pin 2 (GND) through a short, low-impedance trace. The CAN bus traces (CANH, CANL) should be routed as a 120 ohm differential pair with controlled impedance, kept away from switching converters and crossing only at right angles. The exposed pad of the HVSON8 variant (TJA1462BTK) must be soldered to a thermal pad on the PCB for rated thermal performance.
For 8 Mbit/s CAN SIC operation, NXP recommends a short bus stub length (typically under 1 m of unterminated drop) and the standard 120 ohm termination at both ends of the bus. The TJA1462BT's SIC function actively reduces ringing during recessive-to-dominant transitions; designs that previously failed at 5 Mbit/s CAN FD often pass at 8 Mbit/s once SIC is enabled. If the bus has multiple identical bit-rates configured on the same segment, all nodes must either support SIC or accept that non-SIC nodes will not benefit from the improvement.
Do not leave the STB pin floating on the TJA1462BT; tie it to GND through a 10 kohm pulldown if no controller drives it, otherwise the device may power up in Standby mode and miss bus traffic. Verify that VCC is within 4.5 V to 5.5 V at all times, including transient dips during cranking in 12 V automotive systems - add bulk capacitance if needed. Per the NXP datasheet, this part's SOIC-8 version does not have a thermal pad, so power dissipation is limited; the HVSON8 variant (TJA1462BTK) should be chosen for thermally stressful positions.
The TJA1462BT quiescent current in Standby mode is in the microampere range, but Normal-mode dominant current can reach tens of milliamps per node. When designing multi-node CAN segments, sum the per-node dominant currents to size the VCC regulator. NXP recommends a reverse-polarity and load-dump protection network on VCC for automotive applications - typical schematics are shown in the TJA1462 application hints in the datasheet.
