24LC32A-E/SN Visão geral
A serial EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) is a non-volatile memory device that retains data without a battery. The 24LC32A-E/SN belongs to the EEPROM memory IC family, which sits within non-volatile memory and ultimately under semiconductor devices. EEPROMs use the I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) 2-wire bus for communication, requiring only SDA (data) and SCL (clock) lines, plus power and ground. This serial-interface approach drastically reduces pin count versus parallel EEPROMs, enabling small packages and PCB-friendly routing.
Key features include hardware write protection via the WP pin, software write-protect for the upper 1/4 of memory array, page-write buffering up to 32 bytes per page, and over 1 million erase/write cycles per page with greater than 200-year data retention. The 24LC32A-E/SN supports both Standard-Mode (100 kHz) and Fast-Mode (400 kHz) I2C operation, with seven user-selectable slave addresses via the A0, A1, A2 pins, enabling up to eight 24LC32A devices on a single I2C bus.
The device uses CMOS technology and is built around an on-chip charge pump that generates the high voltage needed for byte-level programming. It also features noise suppression filters on the SDA and SCL inputs, schmitt-trigger inputs for bus-noise immunity, and a Power-on Reset (POR) circuit that initializes the device to a known state. Internal ESD protection exceeds 4 kV HBM.
Typical applications include consumer electronics parameter storage (TV settings, white-goods calibration), industrial automation configuration data, automotive infotainment and accessory modules, smart metering calibration and tamper logs, medical device settings storage, IoT endpoint device credentials and logging, and any embedded microcontroller design requiring small non-volatile storage with low standby current.
When designing with this device, place a 10 kohm pull-up on both SDA and SCL and add a 100 nF decoupling capacitor near the VCC pin. The WP pin may be tied low to enable writes or high to lock the array - never leave it floating. For multi-byte writes, respect the 32-byte page boundary to avoid unintended wrap-around.

Aplicações típicas
24LC32A-E/SN é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Consumer Electronics Parameter Storage, Industrial Automation Configuration, IoT Endpoint Device Credentials, Smart Metering and Tamper Logs, Automotive Infotainment and Body Modules, Medical Device Settings Storage.
Consumer Electronics Parameter Storage
The 24LC32A-E/SN is well suited to storing user-tunable settings, factory calibration, and last-power-state memory in TVs, set-top boxes, white goods, and small appliances. The 4-Kbyte capacity comfortably holds channel lists, audio EQ curves, and model/serial strings. Its 1 uA standby current and 2.5V-5.5V supply range allow it to ride along on always-on 3.3V or 5V rails without adding meaningful quiescent draw, and the SOIC-8 footprint drops onto a small housekeeping island next to the main MCU.

Industrial Automation Configuration
In PLCs, sensor transmitters, and motor-drive boards, the 24LC32A-E/SN holds calibration constants, network addresses, and fault logs. The 'E' grade -40C to +125C rating handles cabinet and field-cabinet thermal stress, while the 1 million write cycles per page supports frequent log updates over the product's service life. The 2-wire I2C interface lets it share the bus with ADCs and DACs, eliminating extra GPIO on the host MCU.

IoT Endpoint Device Credentials
Battery-backed IoT sensors and BLE/Wi-Fi nodes use the 24LC32A-E/SN to store Wi-Fi credentials, X.509 certificates, device keys, and rolling log buffers. The 1 uA standby current means battery life is dominated by the radio rather than memory. The WP pin can be tied to a security GPIO to physically prevent firmware from erasing credentials after provisioning, and the upper-quarter software write-protect allows secure boot configuration to be locked while leaving user data writable.

Smart Metering and Tamper Logs
Smart electricity, water, and gas meters use the 24LC32A-E/SN to store calibration factors, billing-tier tables, and tamper-event logs that must survive 15+ year deployments. The >200-year data retention and 1 million write endurance exceed metering reliability requirements. Hardware write-protect via the WP pin lets the meter seal lock calibration data while still allowing rolling tamper-log writes to the unprotected region.

Notas de projeto
I2C is an open-drain bus - both SDA (pin 5) and SCL (pin 6) require external pull-up resistors to VCC. Recommended pull-up values are 2.2 kohm at 5 V / 400 kHz and 4.7 kohm at 3.3 V / 400 kHz. Place a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor close to the VCC pin (pin 8). Keep the SDA/SCL traces short, route them away from switching converters, and avoid running them parallel to high-current traces to minimize induced noise. The A0, A1, A2, and WP pins must each be tied either to VCC or GND - never left floating, since floating CMOS inputs draw bias current and may pick up noise that causes spurious slave-address matches or unintended write-protect glitches.
Two pitfalls trip up first-time 24LC32A-E/SN users. First, the 32-byte page-write boundary: when writing more than 32 bytes consecutively, the address pointer wraps within the page and overwrites the beginning of the page. Always split long writes into 32-byte (or smaller) page-aligned chunks with a 5 ms delay between chunks to allow the internal write cycle to complete. Second, the slave address: the fixed upper nibble is 1010b and the lower nibble is 1010 followed by A2 A1 A0 R/W - so without A0/A1/A2 hardware bits the base write address is 0xA0 (binary 10100000). Forgetting the control byte format is the number-one cause of 'no acknowledge' debugging sessions.
The 24LC32A-E/SN draws 1 mA active and 1 uA standby, but the active peak can briefly reach 3 mA during a write cycle. Ensure the host rail can supply this peak; if the EEPROM shares a rail with a high-current load, add a small ferrite bead or 10 ohm resistor with a 10 uF bulk capacitor to decouple write-cycle inrush. Brown-out and power-on-reset behavior is automatic - the device ignores I2C traffic until VCC crosses the POR threshold (~1.5 V). When designing battery-backed applications, note that the WP pin defaults to write-protected if left floating at power-up, so tie it explicitly to GND to enable writes on a fresh board.
For reliable 400 kHz Fast-Mode operation, calculate the RC time constant of the SDA/SCL pull-ups against the total bus capacitance (EEPROM input pin ~10 pF + PCB trace ~2-5 pF/inch + other devices). Total capacitance should remain below 400 pF. If you must exceed this - for example, with a long cable or many devices - consider a bus extender or reduce clock frequency to 100 kHz. The EEPROM's schmitt-trigger inputs tolerate 0.3*VCC of hysteresis, but very slow rising signals (>1 us rise time) can cause double-clocking - choose pull-up values that give sub-1 us rise times for Fast-Mode operation.
