AMIS30522 Visão geral
What is a micro-stepping stepper motor driver? A micro-stepping stepper motor driver is an integrated circuit that translates digital step commands (clock pulses plus a direction signal) into precision-regulated phase currents in a two-phase bipolar stepper motor. Unlike simple full-step or half-step drivers, micro-stepping drivers divide each full electrical step into many smaller increments (up to 1/32 micro-step in this family), producing smoother rotation, finer angular resolution, and dramatically reduced resonance and audible noise. The driver sits in the motor-control signal chain: MCU -> SPI/STEP/DIR -> stepper driver -> H-bridge -> motor windings.
Key features include programmable peak current up to 1.5 A, a built-in current-translation table that automatically handles micro-step sine profiles, integrated charge-pump for the high-side N-FETs, and a configurable slew rate that lets designers trade EMI against step rate. The on-chip 5 V regulator can supply external logic, and the watchdog/reset output simplifies MCU supervisor design. Safety features include thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout, and short-to-ground and short-to-battery detection on the motor outputs.
The AMIS30522 architecture combines a serial-control block (SPI + NXT + DIR inputs) with a dual H-bridge output stage built around on-chip N-channel MOSFETs. The internal translator tracks rotor position with the NXT clock and DIR state, generating the proper sine/cosine coil currents. SPI registers allow the host MCU to set peak current, micro-step resolution, decay mode, and slew rate; status registers expose fault conditions. The device is specified for an ambient operating temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C (automotive-grade equivalent NCV70522) and is fully compatible with the 12 V automotive voltage environment, including load-dump and jump-start transients described in the AMIS-30522 datasheet.
Typical applications include headlight leveling and adaptive headlamp stepper actuators in cars, HVAC flap and valve control in industrial equipment, XY stages and Z-axis drives in 3D printers, microfluidic pumps and analyzer positioning in medical instruments, throttle-by-wire and idle-air-control actuators, and printer/scanner paper-feed and carriage motors. The wide supply range and integrated protection make it well-suited to systems that must survive harsh electrical environments.
When designing with this driver, place at least one 100 nF and one 10 µF ceramic bypass capacitor directly on the motor supply pin, and connect the exposed pad to a low-impedance ground plane with multiple thermal vias. The motor supply should be decoupled from the logic 5 V rail to prevent logic-noise coupling into the analog reference.

Aplicações típicas
AMIS30522 é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Automotive Headlight Leveling & Adaptive Front-Lighting, HVAC Flap & Valve Stepper Control (Industrial), XY Stage & Z-Axis Drive in 3D Printers, Medical Microfluidic Pumps & Analyzer Positioning, Marine Autopilot & Throttle-By-Wire Actuators, Printer & Scanner Paper-Feed / Carriage Motors.
Automotive Headlight Leveling & Adaptive Front-Lighting
The AMIS30522 fits automotive adaptive-headlamp and headlight-leveling stepper applications because it operates from 8 V to 29 V VM - directly compatible with the 12 V automotive bus and the load-dump/jump-start transients defined by ISO 7637 and OEM EMC standards. The 1.5 A peak phase current and 1/32 micro-stepping via the internal current-translation table deliver the smooth, vibration-free rotation needed for headlamp swivel motors where audible stepping noise would be unacceptable. The on-chip 5 V LDO can supply small MCU supervisor circuits, simplifying BOM. SPI diagnostics report open-load, short-to-ground, short-to-battery, and thermal-shutdown faults back to the BCM over the existing SPI bus. For AEC-Q100 qualified designs, the NCV70522 sibling uses the same NQFP-32 footprint and SPI register map.
Recomendado
HVAC Flap & Valve Stepper Control (Industrial)
The AMIS30522 is a strong fit for industrial HVAC damper, mixing-valve, and zone-control stepper actuators thanks to its wide 8 V to 29 V supply range that covers 24 V industrial control rails, and its 1.5 A peak phase current that handles larger NEMA 23 / NEMA 24 valve actuators. Micro-stepping via the internal current-translation table eliminates audible stepping whine that would otherwise be transmitted through the ductwork. The integrated charge pump correctly drives the high-side N-FETs without external bootstrap, reducing BOM cost. SPI register access lets the controller tune decay mode and slew rate to suppress mechanical resonance on long shafts.
Recomendado
XY Stage & Z-Axis Drive in 3D Printers
The AMIS30522 suits 3D-printer XY stage and Z-axis stepper drives because its 1/32 micro-stepping produces the smooth motion required for high-resolution prints and quiet operation. The 1.5 A peak current covers most NEMA 17 motors used in consumer and prosumer printers, with SPI-register setting of the current limit for flexible matching of different motors. However, for hobby boards, the simpler STEP/DIR-only A4989SLDTR-T or A4988 is preferred because it does not require SPI initialization - reserve the AMIS30522 for printers with an MCU that already has an SPI port available.

Medical Microfluidic Pumps & Analyzer Positioning
The AMIS30522 is well-suited to medical microfluidic pumps, analyzer tray positioners, and laboratory automation stepper actuators where precise micro-stepping and clean rotation are required to avoid disrupting fluid samples. The 1/32 micro-step current-translation table enables sub-degree positioning accuracy, while SPI diagnostics support the fault logging demanded by IEC 62304 and ISO 13485 medical device software processes. The integrated thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout, and short-circuit protection are critical in unattended clinical equipment where electrical faults could compromise sample integrity.
Recomendado
Marine Autopilot & Throttle-By-Wire Actuators
The AMIS30522 is targeted for marine environment applications including autopilot rudder drives and throttle-by-wire actuators where bipolar stepper motors provide reliable open-loop positioning without the feedback cost of a servo motor. The 29 V max VM supply tolerates the +24 V marine DC bus with headroom for alternator load-dump surges. Micro-stepping provides vibration-free rudder motion critical to marine autopilot feel, and the integrated 5 V regulator can supply small peripheral sensors.
Recomendado
Printer & Scanner Paper-Feed / Carriage Motors
The AMIS30522 fits office printer and scanner paper-feed rollers and carriage drives because of its smooth 1/32 micro-step rotation, low audible noise, and SPI programmability that lets the printer firmware tune current and decay mode per paper type and weight. The 1.5 A peak current covers the larger bipolar steppers used in commercial office equipment. The integrated reset/watchdog output simplifies MCU supervisor design in multi-board printer architectures.

Notas de projeto
The AMIS30522's NQFP-32 package has θJA of about 80 °C/W on the standard JEDEC EIA/JESD51 test board, but drops to roughly 30 °C/W when the exposed pad is soldered to a PCB ground plane with multiple thermal vias. Estimated: at 1.5 A peak and ~70% RMS ratio, continuous 1 A RMS per phase dissipates roughly 1.5 W to 2 W in the H-bridge at full step, requiring the PCB ground plane to keep Tj below the 150 °C thermal-shutdown threshold at 85 °C ambient.
Place a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor directly on the VM pin (within 2 mm) and a 10 µF bulk electrolytic or ceramic close to the same node. Add a separate 100 nF + 10 µF pair on the VDD 5 V output. Use a star-ground topology keeping the motor sense-resistor ground return separate from the logic ground to prevent high-di/dt motor currents from injecting noise into the analog reference.
Do not leave the charge-pump flying capacitor pins CP1/CP2 floating - the AMIS30522 datasheet specifies a 100 nF to 220 nF capacitor between them, otherwise the high-side N-FETs will not turn on and the motor will run only on the low-side FETS with reduced torque. Do not exceed 29 V on VM, including load-dump transients; add a TVS clamp rated for 33 V or higher if the application is automotive.
Route the two motor-phase H-bridge outputs as wide differential pairs and place the sense resistors in the low-side return path directly at the SENSE1/SENSE2 pins. Keep the SPI traces (DI, DO, CLK, CSN) away from the motor outputs by at least 3 mm to avoid capacitive coupling. Stitch the ground plane with 4-8 vias around the perimeter of the exposed pad to maximise heat extraction.
The AMIS30522 needs SPI initialization at power-up to set current, decay mode, and micro-step resolution - unlike STEP/DIR-only drivers like A4989SLDTR-T. If the host MCU fails to bring up the SPI port before the first step, the motor may run at full default current with undefined decay mode. Always configure the AMIS30522 registers in your MCU initialization routine before issuing NXT pulses.
