ATSAMD21E15L-AF Visão geral

The Microchip Technology ATSAMD21E15L-AF is an ARM Cortex-M0+ based 32-bit Flash microcontroller (MCU) from the SAM D21E family, operating at up to 48 MHz with 32 KB of Flash and 4 KB of SRAM in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package. It supports a 1.62 V to 3.63 V supply range, integrates a 12-bit ADC, 10-bit DAC, and multiple SERCOM channels, and is engineered for low-power control applications.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (RAM), and a rich set of peripherals including timers, communication interfaces, and analog blocks. Within the broader taxonomy, the ATSAMD21E15L-AF sits in the Cortex-M0+ sub-family, which is the most energy-efficient member of the ARM Cortex-M processor family, optimized for deterministic embedded control in cost-sensitive, low-power products. The SAM D21 family further extends this with Microchip's peripheral mix and the Atmel/Microchip ecosystem (MPLAB X IDE, ASF, Harmony), making it a popular drop-in upgrade path from older AVR designs.

Key features of the ATSAMD21E15L-AF include a maximum CPU clock of 48 MHz, full-speed USB 2.0 device support, up to six SERCOM channels configurable as UART/SPI/I2C, a 12-bit 350 ksps ADC with up to 14 channels, a 10-bit 350 ksps DAC, multiple PWM-capable timers (TCC/TC), and an event system for inter-peripheral signaling without CPU intervention. Functional Safety (FuSa) features and a built-in 32 kHz oscillator support deterministic real-time operation.

Architecturally, the device combines a Cortex-M0+ core with a multi-layer bus matrix, low-power SleepWalking peripherals, and Microchip's proprietary peripheral touch controller for capacitive sensing. The wide supply range (1.62 V to 3.63 V) enables direct operation from a single Li-ion cell or 3.3 V regulated rail, while the integrated USB transceiver removes the need for an external crystal or PHY for many low-speed USB device applications.

Typical applications include LED lighting controllers, low-voltage motor control, industrial sensor hubs, USB human-interface devices (HIDs), consumer wearables, and battery-powered IoT endpoints. The combination of USB device, 12-bit ADC, and PWM timers makes it a strong fit for closed-loop lighting and motor control where deterministic PWM timing is required.

When designing with this part, observe the 48 MHz maximum clock, derate ADC inputs below 1.62 V, and verify USB D+/D- routing per the USB 2.0 specification. The 32-pin TQFP is footprint-compatible with other SAM D20E/SAM D21E family members, simplifying migration between Flash sizes.

Notas de projeto

Place a 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor as close as possible to each VDD and VDDANA pin, and add a bulk 1 µF to 4.7 µF capacitor at the supply input. The SAM D21E contains separate digital and analog supply domains, so decoupling VDDANA independently from VDD reduces ADC noise coupling during high-current PWM switching. Estimated input current at 48 MHz with all peripherals active is approximately 10 mA; budget the LDO for at least 25 mA peak.

The 32-pin TQFP has a typical θJA of approximately 70 C/W, which is adequate for industrial (-40C to +125C) operation because the SAM D21E core draws well under 15 mA at 48 MHz. At maximum ambient (125C), derate clock frequency or peripheral duty cycle so junction temperature stays below the 150C absolute maximum. For closed enclosures without airflow, a small copper pour under the exposed pad (TQFP-32 has a thermal pad on some variants) helps spread heat.

Route the USB D+ and D- differential lines as a matched 90 Ω differential pair with no stubs, and place the 22 Ω series termination resistors close to the SAM D21E pins. Keep total USB trace length under 50 mm where possible and avoid routing near switching regulator inductors to meet USB 2.0 signal-integrity and EMI requirements. If VBUS sensing is used, add a 1 MΩ pull-down on the PA25 pin to comply with USB discharge specifications.

Do not leave the SWD pins (SWDIO, SWCLK) floating; either enable the internal pull-ups in firmware or place external 10 kΩ pull-ups on the programming header. The SAM D21E fuses ship configured for the internal 32.768 kHz oscillator; if you need the 48 MHz DFLL with USB clock recovery, configure the DFLL ONDEMAND bit and verify the closed-loop frequency via the SUPC.VREF.TCVSEL setting. Forgetting to enable the ADC reference voltage buffer results in poor linearity above 1 MSPS conversion rates.

When using SERCOM in SPI mode at the maximum 12 MHz peripheral clock, route the SCK/MOSI/MISO traces as short matched-length pairs and add a 33 Ω series resistor at the SCK output to damp reflections on long traces (>50 mm). The 32-TQFP package has limited ground pins, so use a continuous ground pour on the top layer stitched with vias to the bottom ground plane to provide a return path for high-speed SERCOM signals.
